  • Family of MOH Recipient Turned Away from White House

    Earlier Jonn had a post about the Bush’s touch of class with the Gold Star Mothers. This after Operator Dan gave us his tempered and subtle opinion of the CinC.

    Imagine my surprise when I came across this little gem

    SPOKANE, Wash. — Family of Medal of Honor recipient Vernon Baker was denied access to the White House’s West Wing on Saturday, a day after the World War II hero was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

    Why you might ask? Well for all the right reasons of course….

    Baker’s widow, Heidy, and grandson, Vernon Pawlik, 10, were denied entry because the boy was wearing shorts and a T-shirt. His shirt had a picture of his grandfather on it.

    Yup, violation of the dress code.

    Could this get any better? You betcha…

    Vernon Baker, of St. Maries, Idaho, was the last living black World War II Medal of Honor winner.

    The first black President couldn’t honor the last black MOH winner of WWII.

    I realize that Obama didn’t personally turn them away but what kind of culture exists at the White House that the staff didn’t feel they could make an exception for the Grandson of the last black MOH recipient of WWII after he just watched the Old Guard bury his Grandfather with all the dignity he no doubt earned…..Vernon Bakers MOH citation.

  • Strange bedfellows

    Saturday, 400 groups will converge on Washington, DC in what they call the “One Nation” rally. Of course, I’ve seen Leftist rallies which claimed 30 groups were represented and twenty people were there, so the number of groups isn’t really that important – it’s the types of groups that are showing up and intertwined for what they think make up the majority of Americans.

    Code Pink and the National Education Association? Really? Our teachers are proud to stand along side the post-op trannies of Code Pink? The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees standing alongside Maoist-inspired ANSWER? In fact, every anti-war group you can think of is included and every union organization is right there along with them. So if you’re in a union, your dues money was spent to send people to this political rally. What do I mean? Well, the unions and the NAACP are giving thousands a free bus ride to DC.

    And unlike Glen Beck’s rally earlier this month, this rally is purely political;

    Unlike Beck’s rally, in which overt politics took a back seat to religious and patriotic themes, the progressive groups will repeatedly remind attendees to vote in the midterm elections, said Arlene Holt Baker, executive vice president of the AFL-CIO.

    “We have heard a lot about frustration and anger leading to apathy. What we are finding is that anger is now turning into, ‘Okay, let’s act,’” she said. “We can either sit here and not move forward or we can go backward.”

    Holt Baker considers the rally a first step toward more closely unifying the progressive movement, which has often splintered into niche causes.

    Organizers told the Washington Post what their focus will be;

    Organizers say they are focusing on three unifying ideas: jobs, justice and education. They define those ideas in a set of principles that also lays out a list of causes largely supported by liberals, such as ending discrimination in the criminal justice system, protecting Social Security, spending federal money to create jobs and improving public education.

    “These are the bedrock issues that define who we are and why we march,” Jealous said.

    Oh, really? Then why is the anti-military recruiting organization Ya-Ya Network coming? Why are The Geezers For Sitting on Our Hands (otherwise known as Veterans For Peace) slated? The National Center for Transgender Equality? American Friends Service Committee (otherwise known as Quakers – big anti-war protesters). US Labor Against the War? AIDS Walk Washington? The Trans-Africa Forum? Iraq Veterans Against the War (of course there are many contradictions just in that 5-word title)? US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation?

    Many of those groups have come out against Obama and certain policies of his administration. Gays don’t like that he hasn’t used his bullypulpit to end Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Code Pink, Vets For Peace and IVAW have all criticized him for continuing Bush policies in Iraq and Afghanistan – their reason to exist as organizations. In fact many of the members of those organizations have told me that they didn’t vote for Obama in 2008 – yet here they are at what is essentially a rally to encourage people to vote for Democrats in November.

    This isn’t America. Maybe it’s Washington, DC’s perception of America, but no one I know out here, just the other side of the Beltway, belong to any of those groups. And maybe the union leaders think their membership’s dues are justly spent on carrying smelly busloads of hippies who want a free trip to DC, but I’m pretty sure many of you would disagree.

    If that rally is an accurate portrayal of America, Those of us who aren’t there ought to buy more ammo.

  • Veteran assaulted by Ohio Governor’s supporter

    Yep, its those damn teabaggers that are dangerous. Well, and Ohio’s Democrat Governor Ted Strickland’s supporters. A veteran/Republican staffer was quietly filming Strickland when some doofus dumped hot coffee down his back;

    Authorities are trying to identify the man in this video. If you can assist, contact the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office at (740) 497-1120.

    The veteran showed a lot of restraint, because I’d have that middle finger hanging from my truck’s mirror right now.

  • Capitol Police shoot gunman, HuffPo reacts

    According to Associated Press, the Capitol Police shot an armed man when they felt threatened by the unnamed gunman at about 5 am today.

    Sgt. Schneider said the officers opened fire after the man refused to drop his weapon and that officers fired because they were in “fear for their lives.”

    Readers at the Huffington Post were obviously confused by the news thinking it’s a freakin’ game;

  • What the Hell is Middle Class, Anyway?

    Recently, the news has been full of stories about the shrinking middle class and explosion of  poverty in the US.  The Department of Commerce has announced new Poverty Guidelines, and you can read two separate perspectives on this decision, here   and here .  Commerce says they will still use the old guides for program eligibility and the new ones to evaluate program effectiveness and such.

     How much poverty is there really  in America.  Listen, I live so far below the “poverty line”, you’d need a back hoe to dig us all out.    What is making people so damn poor?  And while were at it… fat.

    On paper my family is the poster family for poverty in America.  But based on the loose definition of Middle Class– home-ownership, college, kids in college, and vacation (we went on one last year, woo woo)– put us just inside this holy grail.   But while the government tries to “save” other lower income families… they are destroying their quality of life. 

    Here’s an example of real  POVERTY:

    Ok, I don’t want to see people living in America living  like that. Chances are, if they do, its because of something the parents lack, and I don’t mean money. 

    But social manipulation has detroyed the quality of life of those who live with less in the United States.  We’ve told them that life will get better if you put Jr. in Head Start and get a job, but then act shocked when the kids, and moms, get fat . Or we fill their wallets with food cards so they can buy frozen pizza and burritos and pop and use all their extra cash at McDonalds or to pay for cable.  We tell women they don’t need a man, that they can raise a kid on their “own” with Uncle Sam’s help.  We tell them we’ll pay their rent if they will all move in together like so much cattle. 

      We’ve made available to the poor all the things they would be striving to get, if it wasn’t already given to them.   And men?  Well, they’re still getting their share of mindless entertainment, regardless of if they have time for it, or not.

    Maybe, just maybe, we need to stop trying to give the “sorta-poor” in the US everything everyone else has, and  let them learn to LIVE again.  To feel the satisfaction of raising children, saving for a home, or just paying the rent steadily, and know they did it with their own two hands.

  • If We Can’t Use Dogs, Can We Use PETA Members to Sniff Out IEDs?

    I was reading this article about the dog handlers from my old unit (2nd Battalion, 1st Marines) and what they are doing to get ready to go to Afghanistan. One of the Marines interviewed at the end of the video in the article was in my squad for the last half of our Iraq deployment (and is an all-around good Marine). Good breakdown of what dogs do for our grunts in Afghanistan.

    However, I saw this little gem at the end of the article:

    The program, which first began in 2007, is being opposed by animal rights group PETA, 10News learned.

    In a statement sent to 10News, the organization said: “No animal should be used in situations considered too dangerous for a human being, as those situations, obviously, too dangerous for the animal as well.”

    First of all, anyone who has deployed with these dogs can tell you they are treated extremely well and their handlers don’t knowingly put them into situations that would result in their deaths or serious injury. They are trained to sniff out IEDs before they are set off and because of their lightweight and smaller size they are less likely to set off land-mines or pressure plates. Bottom line is these dogs save lives and are not simply being sent into battle to blow themselves up so a human doesn’t have to. But if PETA had their way, this life-saving tool would be removed from the battlefield. So I purpose this solution: If PETA doesn’t want us to use dogs to sniff out IEDs, then they should do a one-for-one swap of dogs for PETA members so the Marine Corps/Army/Navy/Air Force can train (or attempt to train) them to sniff out bombs and IEDs.

    Its a win-win for everybody involved in my opinion.

    Here’s my latest email from my BFFs at Organizing for America – the Democrat National Committee’s shell group. Apparently, just like they did with Newt Gingrich, Denny Hastert and every other Republican Speaker of the House, they’ve targeted Ohio’s John Boehner and pegged him as an extremist puppet of the lobbyists;

    Yeah, a “grassroots supporter” has promised to match your donation. Cuz all grassroots supporters can make an open ended commitment to match your money dollar-for-dollar. And his name probably happens to be Soros – if not a K Street lobbyist. We all know that Obama isn’t beholden to lobbyists – he’s put them all on his cabinet.
