  • Yea great idea. Why didn’t we think of that, oh yeah it is stupid.

    I have friends who are active in the group Rethink Afghanistan. Sometimes the post stories and comments that seem more like satire. But lately I am having a hard time telling the difference anymore. This one is a perfect example.

    Nicholas Kristof’s New York Times column shares a shocking statistic that shows the U.S.’s warped priorities in Afghanistan: if we brought home just 243 troops, we’d save enough money to pay for all higher education everywhere in Afghanistan this year.

    Yep cause the fact that Afghanistan’s illiteracy in that most people in Afghanistan cannot read and write. So the money that would be freed up would be used for post secondary education would not be abused for other things.

    “Remember Afghanistan has been at war for 30 years, and neither the Soviets who were here before the Taliban nor the Taliban put people through school. So education was not prized. As a matter of fact, the Taliban shut down the schools.”

    But with the time proven statement of “Nothing is impossible to those that do not have to do it” have people over at Rethink Afghanistan is a great idea.

    Mr. [Greg] Mortenson says that $243 million is needed to fund all higher education in Afghanistan this year. He suggests that America hold a press conference here in Kabul and put just 243 of our 100,000 soldiers (each costing $1 million per year) on planes home. Then the U.S. could take the savings and hand over a check to pay for Afghanistan’s universities.

    The war in Afghanistan isn’t making us safer, and it’s not worth the cost. The fact that bringing home 243 troops could pay for all higher education in Afghanistan this year shows that there are much, much better ways of stabilizing Afghanistan and improving the lives of Afghans if we’re willing to let go of military force as the answer.

    Yea with so in review how does passing around this little gem that would not only not work but no one that thought of it will be willing to make it work. But it sounds nice, which is more important then anything else.

  • More anti-military crap from unions at Obama rally

    More stuff I swiped from Ace of Spades.

    At Breitbart’s Big Government, Derek Broes has the story of a stagehand helping to set up for the Obama rally in Los Angeles, Duane Hammet, who got fired by the union for wearing a “Bush” hat and sweatshirt. The “Bush” in this case is the carrier USS George H. W. Bush upon which Hammet’s son is serving in the Navy these days.

    The IATSE (Local 33) union fired the worker even after he explained the shirt to his bosses. The shirt didn’t explicitly support George H.W Bush but that of the aircraft carrier named after the former President and the aircraft carrier his son has served on for the past many years and is currently deployed.

    I guess this shows the hyper-sensitivity the union thugs and Democrats have towards anything (by anything, I mean any-f***ing-thing) that even has the slightest reference to their empty message. Do I think the guy did it on purpose? Yep, but ya know, that’s his right. You just know that one of Obama’s handlers saw the shirt and made a stink to the union wrangler.

    And if the guy did wear the shirt and hat to piss someone off, shame on the union foreman (and the Obama handler if they were the ones to bitch) for falling for it. Our side has to tolerate Code Pink and their ridiculous antics…

    …but this guy loses his fricken job for wearing his son’s hat and sweatshirt?

    I can’t put it better than Ace.

    They just don’t like the military, do they?

    They’re gonna like them a lot less in ten days.

    Haven’t these numbnuts learned anything from the Williams firing? Is taking someone’s livelihood the only thing they have to control the working class? It kind of reminds me of the way they took jobs from their ideological opponents in Soviet Russia. Cowards, all of them.

  • Retired Colonel puts rich boy in his place

    I picked this up at Ace of Spades yesterday, but I’ve been holding on to it for days like this. It seems that Retired Colonel Chris Gibson is facing off with Scott Murphy – another of those Hah-vahd grads who carpetbagged themselves into New York State. Chris Gibson, on the other hand is a born and bred New Yorker who graduated from Sienna College (near Albany) with an ROTC Commission. Gibson rose through the ranks through four tours of Iraq, a trip to Kosovo and most recently commanded the 2d Brigade Combat Team of the 82d Airborne Division to Haiti. According to his bio, he has a Purple Heart, 4 Bronze Star Medals, 3 Legions of Merit, Ranger Tab and a CIB.

    Anyway, Gibson’s opponent, what’s-his-name-snooty-carpetbagger-lawyer-guy, accused Gibson of wanting to send jobs overseas. Go to 1:30 in this video to see his response;

    In case you missed it; “the only thing that I’ve shipped overseas in the last few years has been myself and my paratroopers to fight for this country.”

    According to the Albany Times-Union;

    A public poll last month showed Murphy leading Gibson, but a Republican-sponsored poll released Tuesday claims Gibson is leading by three points.

  • Big Fat…, huh?

    Amy J sends us this video from the governor race in New Mexico. Diane Denish, Bill Richardson’s El-Tee is running for governor of the Adam Kokesh State (What? That’s not a topside view of Kokesh’s head exploding on the State flag? I thought…oh never mind). Well, here’s the video of her talking about her opponent taking border security money to pay…well, I’ve said too much.

    Get your mind out of the gutter, Diane. Concentrate on the race.

  • Grayson on the skids

    Thanks to Claymore, we were privy to the Democratic Underground’s live blog session with Alan Grayson, the bullying braggart Congressman from the Bronx who represents Florida’s 8th district in Orlando. During that live blog session we were able to see Grayson’s response to such deep, hard-hitting and topical questions as “…why did you shave off the goatee? You looked so awesome-scary.”

    Well, according to the Washington Times, Grayson is in danger of being retired;

    “It’s over – Alan Grayson is the surest loser in the House right now,” said David Wasserman, who covers House races for the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.

    “Grayson has rubbed the voters of his district the wrong way. He misread his win in 2008 as an affirmation of his candidacy and his principles.”

    Apparently, nationwide Leftist support for Grayson’s irritating behavior hasn’t influenced Orlando voters’ opinion of him (kind of the like the Right’s dislike of Nancy Pelosi doesn’t affect California voters).

    While Mr. Grayson’s take-no-prisoners approach may endear him to his liberal base, it may not play so well with the 24 percent of his Orlando district who are registered independents. Many of those unaffiliated voters who sided with President Obama – and Mr. Grayson – in 2008 appear ready to vote Republican this year.

    I may have to stock up on liquor for November 2d. I haven’t done a live blog session since the last election when TAH readers commiserated with us as we watched the inevitable outcome of that night. I may do it again, if there’s any interest.

  • Kos & Co fail yesterday’s history test

    I read this yesterday at Ace of Spades and figured it was too late to be of interest to you, but Old Trooper and, um, someone else wanted to talk about it today.

    Our buddy Cuffy Miegs noticed a Twitter exchange yesterday between MarKos and some of his friends discussing what they thought was an historical gaffe from Sarah Palin when she told her folks at a rally not to party like it’s 1773 yet.

    Well, it turns out that Palin, is obviously smarter than her detractors at least as far as historical dates go. I guess the Left thinks that all American history begins in 1776. Or January 20, 2009.

    One of our other buddies, Michele Malkin reports that Gwen Ifill, that famously non-partisan moving face from NPR is weaseling out of her misreportage.

  • Clinton advisor wanted a sitting duck for Hussein

    Old Trooper sends us this link from Newser‘s John Johnson who has had the time to read part of Hugh Shelton’s new book, Without Hesitation: The Odyssey of an American Warrior;

    In 1997, one of Bill Clinton’s Cabinet members suggested that Shelton order a US plane to fly low over Baghdad so Saddam would shoot it down and, ta da, give America instant justification for war. “I was so mad I was about to explode,” recounts Shelton, thinking about the sacrificial pilot.

    Salon quotes more about the moment;

    I looked across the table, thinking about the pilot in the U-2 and responded, “Of course we can …” which prompted a big smile on the official’s face.

    “You can?” was the excited reply.

    “Why, of course we can,” I countered. “Just as soon as we get your ass qualified to fly it, I will have it flown just as low and slow as you want to go.”

    The official reeled back and immediately the smile disappeared. “I knew I should not have asked that….”

    By the process of elimination, Salon posits that the second ugliest Secretary of State Maddy Albright was the official who made the suggestion, although Shelton doesn’t name her. Salon and Huffington Post defend the suggestion because the call for eliminating Hussein was at a fever pitch in the Clinton White House, but somehow dissipated in the following years.

    Another book for my reading list – hope it’s on Kindle.

  • Sestak tries to frighten PA seniors

    I get Pennsylvania TV here in West Virginia so when I saw this ad last night, I was a little pissed that Sestak thinks so little of his constituents that he’d run this blatant lie to deceive PA seniors with his fear mongering;

    First of all notice, all of the people in the ad are probably on Social Security – they wouldn’t be affected by new social security reform. They’re already receiving payments – which by the way, haven’t kept up with inflation since George Bush left office.

    From the Scranton Times-Tribune;

    Under Mr. Toomey’s proposal, the government would guarantee the Social Security benefits of people currently at or approaching retirement age.

    “Any change for those folks would be outrageous and unreasonable. Those people who have worked a lifetime paying into a system with a promised set of benefits need to get what they were promised,” Mr. Toomey said.

    On The Issues, tells the truth about Toomey and his record on Social Security; He’s voted to lower taxes on Social Security (since Democrats raised taxes on Social Security in 1993 from 50% taxable payments to 80%). Toomey voted to create personal retirement accounts within Social Security which were completely voluntary.

    I’m stunned and shocked that a Vote Vets candidate like Sestak would lie. Well, no I’m not…I expect it.
