  • C&L; GOP is influencing mental patients to threaten Dems

    Apparently, a mentally ill man drove by a building where Patty Murray was debating her opponent in Spokane when Murray supporters witnessed Johnny J. Sieler waving a meat cleaver out his car window and shouting threats directed at Murray, safely inside the building. I guess he drove by three times before police finally apprehended him. Of course to Crooks and Liars’ David Neiwert, this is indicative of a bigger problem. People are listening to the GOP.

    Interestingly, this incident is only the latest in a string of violent threats at Democrats — and particularly President Obama — cropping up very recently, and in all of them mental illness appears to be playing a significant role.

    We already know what this means: The right-wing pundits who have been throwing gasoline on these people’s fundamentally irrational fires will insist they have nothing to do with this — this is just crazy people.

    Of course, as we’ve observed on many occasions, this is simply a cop-out:

    These claims also brush over the nature of mental illness. Of course, schizophrenics will often pick out the focuses of their obsessions purely at random — from, say, Beatles or Metallica lyrics, artistic works by never intended to inspire any kind of action, let alone violent ones. However, rhetoric intended to inspire action — particularly scapegoating rhetoric that simultaneously invokes fear and paranoia, most notably if it purports to represent secret, hidden, and suppressed information — has a far greater potential power to affect mentally ill people, because it has an acute appeal to their particular worldviews.

    Neiwert’s co-author, karoli makes the same intellectually vacant claim;

    This is what a daily diet of toxic spew from the likes of Fox News, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and Americans for Prosperity emails can do to a person. I’m on two tea party lists. They send out emails 3-4 times per day, all apocalyptic, all promising we live in a doomed country with a pretender in the White House.

    Yep, that’s what it was – GOP campaign commercials drive lunatics over the edge. Neiwert lists several cases of crazy people threatening Democrats -mostly threatening the president, but I don’t remember Neiwert or karoli warning and worrying about these particular cases;

    Tampa Bay Times, November 28, 2007; [Delores Jean Baines] faces up to five years in federal prison for a letter she mailed to the White House in July 2006, telling the president she bought a gun, that he lived like a king, that she hated him.

    A sentencing date had not yet been set.

    Baines told the court she wrote the letter when she was struggling with mental illness, employed but living “outside.”

    Associated Press, 4/7/2006 ; A Palestinian man faces federal charges of threatening President Bush over comments made while getting mental-health care, according to an indictment made public this week.

    News of the indictment raised questions Friday about how to treat such comments by mental patients.

    Federal grand jurors indicted Arafat Nijmeh on March 23 on two felony counts of “knowingly and willfully” threatening to harm Bush — first by telling two workers at his treatment center that he wanted to castrate Bush, then a day later to Secret Service agents notified by the center.

    The indictment says Nijmeh told the agents that his threat “is not too harsh, considering what he has done to my country. If not that than maybe something else, you know?”

    Nijmeh, 26, later said he was joking.

    J. Steven Beckett, a University of Illinois law professor, said Nijmeh’s statements at the Alton Mental Health Center might be “delirious rantings of a mental patient.”

    Fox News, February 18, 2008; After a one-day bench trial on Wednesday, Dost was committed to federal custody for treatment and further evaluation, U.S. District Court records show.

    Several witnesses had told authorities that Dost said he planned to assassinate Bush. Authorities said Dost made the comments to four other job applicants during an orientation for USA Truck at a Fort Smith hotel in April 2006. A company employee alerted the FBI.

    Associated Press, Dec 31, 2008; David A. Nelson, 45, was arrested in November after members of Portland’s Joint Terrorism Task Force connected him with bomb threats made between March and October.

    In a plea deal filed in U.S. District Court, prosecutors will drop additional charges and recommend Nelson face five years of probation, with the conditions that he submit to mental health treatment and not make any threats, The Oregonian newspaper reported.

    What Neiwert is really trying to say is that the GOP should just shut up and not campaign. It didn’t work when Clinton tried to shut down criticism by blaming Rush Limbaugh for the Oklahoma City bombing. It didn’t work when Kerry and Gore blamed the right for hate crimes (both real and imagined) during their campaigns. It won’t work this time.

  • Media Matters won’t admit that terrorists are Muslims

    In a weak attempt to pile on Bill O’Reilly along with Whoopie Goldberg and Joy Behar, who walked off the set of The View yesterday, Media Matters puts up a video from this morning’s Fox and Friends in which Brian Kilmead says “not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims”.

    Of course the gutless Media Matters posts the video without comment and leaves it to their fans;

    by rikntx (3 hours and 2 minutes ago)

    Timothy McVeigh was a Muslim???

    by shelby73 (3 hours and 2 minutes ago)

    I didn’t know Timothy McVeigh was a Muslim!

    by Grimdogg (2 hours and 41 minutes ago)

    So abortion clinic bombers, Timothy McVeigh, Eric Rudolph, Andrew Kehoe, the McNamara Brothers, Ted Kacynski, Terry Nichols, Eric Harris, Dylan Klebold, James W. VonBrunn, Andrew Stack III, and Seung-Hui Cho were all really Muslims in disguise. Faux News’ hypocrisy knows no bounds.

    This is so tiring – the Left has such a intellectually vacant knee-jerk reaction to anyone who happens to mention that some Muslims are terrorists that they drag out all manner of criminals who would have been just that ten years ago so they can make themselves feel better about defending Muslims from any hint that we’re fighting some Muslims because of what some other Muslims did.

    We all know what Kilmeade was saying – all of the organized terrorist organizations with whom we’re at war are Muslim. With the exception of McVeigh and Terry Nichols, all of the criminals on “Grimdogg’s” list were acting alone without an organization…but al Qaeda is an organization with the stated purpose of terrorizing Americans to change our political system.

    I won’t admit that we’re at war with all of Islam, but if the Left can’t admit that the terrorists who we’re fighting are Muslims, they can’t qualify to join in this discussion.

  • DoJ sues NY over absentee ballot fiasco

    You may remember that late last week i told you that New York failed to mail out absentee ballots to make their negotiated deadline of October 1st. The Department of Justice has finally discovered something they can sue about and filed a lawsuit against the State yesterday according to the New York Times;

    While all the remaining ballots — roughly 40,000, federal officials said — have now been sent, the delay raised the risk that some might be returned too late to be counted in the election results.

    The Justice Department said it was negotiating with New York election officials over extending a period after the Nov. 2 election by which such ballots could arrive and still be counted. The goal of the negotiations is to reach a joint agreement to settle the lawsuit as a consent decree approved by a federal judge, which would be legally binding and would pre-empt state election laws.

    NYS’s primary was held September 14th so they had two weeks ro print the ballots and send them out. According to another NY Times article, NY is planning on moving the primaries up in order to make the deadline next year. But that doesn’t excuse the fact that they missed the deadline this year.

    NY should have moved their primary up this year since the MOVE Act passed last year and NY’s primaries were scheduled for only the fourth day before the deadline to mail out absentee ballots. Anyone could’ve seen this coming…even a blind governor.

  • DCCC cuts ads for Dem who won’t vote for Pelosi

    I guess the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is trying to get it’s candidates back on the reservation according to a story from The Hill;

    “This morning The Jackson Sun reported for the first time what I’ve repeatedly told citizens: I will not vote for Nancy Pelosi for House Speaker,” [State Sen. Roy] Herron said in a statement. “If the DCCC pulling ads is the price of independence and following my conscience, so be it. That’s the kind of congressman I’ll be.”

    Herron’s locked in a tough race against Republican Stephen Fincher for a seat that the GOP needs to win if it hopes to pick up the 39 or more seats they need to win back control of the House. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the contest as a “lean Republican” race, with only three weeks to go until the election.

    Of course if Tennesseans don’t elect Herron, they won’t have to worry about their congressman voting for Pelosi, if that’s their issue.

  • Another enemy of the Republic; the Chamber of Commerce

    I got the following letter Friday about the new national security threat – the Chamber of Commerce which has given money to Republican candidates (oh, they’ve given to Democrat candidates, too, like Joe Manchin). The Organizing For America crowd, which operates under the auspices of the Democrat National Committee, is stirring up those of us who can’t figure out how to turn off the emails;

    Of course, the Chamber of Commerce is an association of small businesses – those guys that Obama wanted to help by giving them useless government loans just a month ago – that lobbies for their members. Some of their members are American businesses that operate overseas…so naturally, the Obama Administration is worried about “foreign donations”. Fact Check.org says there is no evidence of foreign donations;

    It’s certainly true that millions are being spent without public disclosure, and that much of the money is coming from corporations taking advantage of a Supreme Court ruling easing restrictions on political spending. But using foreign funds to finance political ads is still a legal violation. Accusing anybody of violating the law is a serious matter requiring serious evidence to back it up. So far Democrats have produced none.

    Bob Schieffer had this exchange with David Axelrod yesterday;

    On “Face the Nation,” CBS’ Bob Schieffer noted that the Times had quoted the chamber’s chief lobbyist as saying that the chamber got less than $100,000 from foreign affiliates, and Schieffer challenged White House Senior Adviser David Axelrod:

    CBS’ Schieffer, Oct. 10: But this part about foreign money, that appears to be peanuts, Mister Axelrod, I mean, do you have any evidence that it’s anything other than peanuts?

    Axelrod: Well, do you have any evidence that it’s not, Bob?

    Remember the 2008 campaign when neither the media nor the Democrats were concerned about the foreign cash flowing into the Obama coffers?

    Thanks to 1stCavRVN11B for sending me his email, too.

  • New York scores epic fail mailing ballots to military serving overseas

    The New York State Board of Elections was given a waiver for complying with the Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment (MOVE) Act if they promised to get the ballots out to voters by October 1st. So, what’s today? The 8th? Those ballots still haven’t gone to voters from New York City and several other counties according to Eric Eversole, the Executive Director of the Military Voter Protection Project. According to an email I received from Eversole;

    With only 25 days before the election, thousands of New York military voters now stand on the brink of having their voices silenced in the upcoming elections.

    Even if New York City and the New York counties mail absentee military ballots today—that is, 25 days before the election—some of those ballots may not be delivered prior to the election. The Military Postal Service Agency has estimated that it may take up to 30 days for overseas service members to receive their absentee ballots, especially if they are serving on the front lines in a remote location. Under New York law, all absentee ballots must be completed and postmarked prior to the election in order to be counted.

    Everyone who is surprised, raise your hand…yeah, me neither. The Justice Department should stop issuing waivers and threaten States with huge fines (plus interest) if they don’t comply. That’s what they’d do to me or you, right?

    They ought to make that ritard governor fly the ballots personally to Afghanistan…well, with someone else flying the plane, of course…and take that fuckstick Bloomberg with him.
    The cert letter is below the jump;

  • The Difference Between American Freedom and European Freedom (Or Lack Of It)

    I am not a Geert Wilders fan. His ideas to ban the Koran and to prevent the building of new Mosques in the Netherlands go against my beliefs in property rights and free speech. I also am bothered that many conservatives whom I respect are building connections with him and his movement in Europe. That is not a good idea.

    However, I am greatly disturbed by the fact that Wilders is on trial in the Netherlands for “hate speech” for expressing his views on Islam. The Dutch and the rest of Europe do not view free speech in the same way Americans do. Britain bans books and keeps a list of people who are prevented from entering the country based on the perception that they encourage hatred. Germany bans political parties, censors movies and video games, and arrests people who deny the Holocaust (most central European countries have laws like this in effect). France banned the burqa and the display of other religious paraphernalia.

    When progressive talk up Europe and their social democracies, just remember these prohibitions are part of them.

  • That “One Nation” rally

    I was debating with myself last night whether I wanted to go to the rally in Washington today or not. Instead I spent the day at the range blasting little paper targets with my three new pistols. Sorry, I know I’ve let you down. But here’s a video of somone who announced to the crowd that their numbers exceeded those of the Glen Beck event last month;

    Yeah, I really don’t think so. This is from CBS;

    There are a lot of people, but it’s not as dense as the videos I’ve seen from the Beck thing. You’ll notice that every single news report begins with “hundreds of groups” – because you know, groups is more important than actual bodies. Like I’ve said, we seen rallies, like the protest against the Army Experience Center in Philadelphia, that boasted 30 or 40 groups and like 25 people showed up. So that must be their new strategy – if they can’t force enough union members to show up, if free bus rides to DC don’t bring in the numbers, if a town full of college students are so lazy they won’t even walk across the street to get to the rally, they can boast about the number of two-member groups who announce their support.

    I watched some CNN interviews today (I know, me watching CNN, right?) and the people who were interviewed were very careful to explain that they were rallying against Congress…NOT the president. Every single interviewee…like it’s been rehearsed or something. I wonder what that’s about.

    Anyway, Donald Douglas, at American Power has aggregated some of the news and blogs that are covering it.

    I’m glad I didn’t waste my time and blasted paper targets in Blue-assed Maryland instead.

    ADDED: More photos at Marooned in Marin, Pirates’ Cove and at El Marco‘s joint.
