  • How is that working out for you now?

Well after reading Jonn’s post about the (I might have thought about going to) Iraq, GWOT, New Dawn Veterans against the war is doing in Iraq. Considering her last statement, I wonder how well it would work if we where not there. This might be a likely out come.

The three University of California at Berkeley graduates were detained July 31, after apparently straying into Iran while hiking in a scenic part of Iraq. This month, Iran’s intelligence minister accused them of having links to U.S. intelligence services, which their families said was absurd.

Two of three American hikers jailed in Iran for nearly nine months are in poor health and told Swiss diplomats — their first outside visitors since October — that they were considering a hunger strike, their mothers said late Thursday.

Yep remember the three students from Berkley University home of the “not welcome in our city.” in regards to the Marines? Well they are still there and from the looks of it their accommodations are less then a 5 star rating.

Bauer and Fattal, who are both 27, and Shourd, 31, had been allowed no sympathetic visitors in months, though they were allowed to call their mothers in early March. The calls lasted about a minute.

Their mothers were heartened that the Swiss diplomats were allowed a 40-minute visit. They were told their children have been allowed to receive letters from family and friends, and were given access to books from the prison’s library, the diplomats told their families. The three were told of efforts by their families to secure their release and that their mothers applied for visas to try to visit them in prison.

But seems that one of them has a stomach issue that is thinking on going on a hunger strike while another is having problems with a pre-existing depression issue while being in isolation for 9 months.

But the reason that they were where they are is….

Bauer, a freelance journalist, had been hired to cover the Kurdish elections, but his family said the hiking trip was a vacation. He and Sarah Shourd were dating and had been living in Damascus, Syria. She taught English and had written for various online publications.

Josh Fattal went to visit them after traveling overseas on a teaching fellowship.

So after 9 months how is that vacation and fellowship teaching?

Mean while Tracey Harmon is having fun posing next to Russian made Anti-aircraft guns. Where have I seen that before.

  • Late Sunday Night Funny

At least it is Sunday here. I was not going to post this weekend but this is too good to pass up.

I have been following posts on the Rag Blog that led to John posting this one.

I got a chance to read what the author’s thought on both sites, some standard replies but nothing out of the norm. Then comes this guy, Brother Jonah

He does not waste a letter to start off the crazy.

Then there’s the Kurd Shepherd blown away along with his flock because a U.S. Air Force Pilot couldn’t tell the difference between sheep and people. Bush, a master Liar from the depths of Hell, claims that every such incident occurred only whenthe aircraft were targeted. This happened in the Northern No-Fly Zone (Kurdistan) before the Invasi… oops “Liberation”.

Ok, besides were is the proof, I have to ask where did this come from?

Lets not forget the sinister motives.

I suspect the reason you challenge her story is by your own admission you do a lot of challenging of anybody who speaks or writes against the war. The Anti-War movement are by necessity volunteers, no corporate or government sponsors.

    Or this one.

We’re not the ones killing people based on lies. That leaves a much higher burden of proof on the Pentagon apologists. Prove you’re not an Agent Provocateur or that any of the “discredited” stories you claim to be debunked are both fake AND not from a Pentagon source.

This one I was not even sure how to reply to this one.

Then there’s the notion that the Pentagon plants fake veterans in organizations like VVAW and IVAW in order to “expose” them, and all the ChickenHawks crow really loudly that they’ve “disproved” the Anti-War Veterans.

So all of those people that have been outed in the IVAW as fakes are really just infiltrators.

It goes on and on like that for two post, but the thing that I got offended about was him trying to tell me how Texans act. I was born and raised in Texas, living there for over 25 years.

By the way, people in Texas DO talk to strangers. It’s something you’d have to experience.

    Really? I mean seriously?

  • The Sky is Falling!

Ok I am not sure what to make of this and when it became a impending issue?

President Barack Obama set a lofty next goal this week for Americans in space: Visiting an asteroid by 2025. But reaching a space rock in a mere 15 years is a daunting mission, and one that might also carry the ultimate safety of the planet on its shoulders.

If humanity doesn’t develop a capability to meet space rocks head-on, and win, than it is almost a certainty that an asteroid will eventually threaten life on Earth, he added.

So let get this straight we are going after all the things we are dealing right now we are going to put funds into a program that has a goal that most likely not even going to happen.

Oh and try to make sense of one

“By going to a near-Earth object, an asteroid, and perhaps even modifying its trajectory slightly, we would demonstrate a hallmark in human history,” said Grunsfeld, who flew on three shuttle missions to fix the Hubble Space Telescope. “The first time humans showed that we can make better decisions than the dinosaurs made 65 million years ago.”

If humanity doesn’t develop a capability to meet space rocks head-on, and win, than it is almost a certainty that an asteroid will eventually threaten life on Earth, he added.

    You make Captain Picard Cry.

  • Billboards anger DUmmies

    genthumbashx

I guess there’s some angst in Atlanta over who is posting billboards that oppose the President’s policies. The local news on channel 11 claims they “broke” the story of the billboards (although, I don’t know how writing a story about bill boards that are on public display counts as a story they “broke”) and now they’ve dug up the man behind the endeavor, Tommy Newberry.

    But, what they have trouble with is the picture of the president, not the message;

    1. That’s a hideous “likeness”of Obama.

    Bastards.

    12. I thought the same thing. It looks…NOTHING like President Obama.

    18. The nose struck me, reminds me of Nazi anti-Jewish caricatures.

    21. So, it should be obvious to everyone which one of these individuals is of the darker persuasion. Boehner!

What does the “darker persuasion” have to with anything? And isn’t it racist to make a “darker persuasion”, the evil one? And last I checked, Congressman John Boehner is white, so WTH are you babbling about, ya dope.

    Because of their inability to accept the fact that some folks think that the President is wrong on policy, those who oppose him are racists;

    5. A veritable plethora of RW MFers seem to be rearing their ugly heads in psychopathic unison.

    9. How is Obama and the Democrats shattering the American Dream maybe the republican dream of not being able to cheat their way into taking over another election. But this administration is doing a hell of a lot better in one year for this country than bush and the republicans did in eight years. Stuff like this is what makes me angry. What in the hell is wrong with these people. I have never said this before but since all this crap appears mostly in the south I am saying this and damn it to hell they are a bunch of RACIST THROUGH AND THROUGH AND UPSET BECAUSE WE HAVE A BLACK PRESIDENT. NOW…

    15. They’re not…these hatemongers want the bones of ronald raygun to rise and give them a taste of their glory days.

    In another discussion, the DUmmies are upset that Sarah Palin actually speaks out against the President, because they never did that during the Bush Administration;

I wonder if that stupid woman knows she is talking traitorously about the Commander in Chief, her military son’s leader? Remember when we were called on the carpet for any negative comment about Bush, during a time of war? Bush was never, never so dismissed in such ugly commentary as is our President. I am truly sickened by Palin, Gingrich, Cheney and that lot in New Orleans. They are ignorant flame throwers who are not concerned about the welfare of this country.

What a short memory they have. Here’s a reminder thanks to John Hawkins at Right Wing News.

  • Project Hero and University of Regina

There was some more thing about this story that I found to be interesting to say the least. One was this story from a guy saying that because he was a solider in the Canadian military that he can say that Project Hero is a waste of money.

Garson Hunter teaches social work at the University of Regina and is one of the professors fighting the Project Hero scholarship fund.

Hunter says that the dependents of fallen soldiers have post-secondary education already paid for under the Children of Deceased Veterans Education Assistance Act.

The Act was created in 1953 to provide dependents of slain and disabled soldiers the opportunity to get a post-secondary education.

“(Project Hero) comes with no (government) money. Project Hero is provided solely by the U of R,” said Hunter.

So if you want to say that the reason is that the school needs to help other students, then explain this statement from the University.

Barb Pollock, spokeswoman for the U of R, said the university doesn’t always know what funding may be available to certain students.

“We don’t look at what else is available,” she said. “For example, there are many scholarships and awards that students with Aboriginal ancestry can access.”

Pollock said the Project Hero scholarship will not stifle other scholarship opportunities.

“Every year, there are numerous scholarships available that never get used,” she said. “Through these scholarships we try to open up our university to as many people as possible.”

You mean that there is a large list of scholarships that are going unused? Never.

But giving Children who have lost a parent to war is a political tool.

“It is absolutely deplorable to use soldiers’ deaths to aggrandize military endeavors in Afghanistan,” said Hunter. “As a former soldier, I find this disgraceful.”

I wonder if Canada has a equivalent Freedom of Information act, because right now would be a good reason to use it.

Oh there is a facebook fan page that is protesting the actions of these professors. As of this posting it has close to three thousand members. I am sure that we can help put them over the top.

Also I would encourage writing to the school and making a case for keeping this program.

  • Longer “Collateral Murder” Video Posted

Wikileaks has posted a longer version of the “collateral murder” video without its own commentary yesterday. The longer video (which Wikileaks says is unedited) shows that shortly after 1-16 Infantry arrives on the scene they start taking fire from a nearby building and the Apache has to take that out too. That part starts around 3o:00 in this video:

This longer video reinforces the fact there was pretty intense combat going on in that neighborhood where this Apache and 1-16 Infantry were operating. In what has become typical of the way the war in Iraq has been reported, the coverage of this story has been pretty shallow and leaves out important details. I have been scanning news articles from the AP, Reuters, CNN, MSNBC, and several others and most leave out important details. Almost none of the articles mention that there were RPGs among the insurgents smoked or even attempted to provide any background on how heavy the fighting was in that area. Not to mention there has been little mention of the new video that was posted yesterday. Fucking typical.

  • Duff: Moscow attack was a US “false flag” operation

I was just minding my own business today and reading a blog post about some crackpot theory that the CIA and the Mossad planned and executed the attack on Moscow’s subway system this last week, when I discovered that the author was using Gordon Duff as an unimpeachable source. The article the author was quoting from Duff is entitled “Terrorism; Always Suspect a False Flag First

So what evidence does Duff use to support his theory that the terrorist attack in Moscow was a false flag operation by the CIA?

    * 67 percent of Republicans (and 40 percent of Americans overall) believe that Obama is a socialist
    * 45 percent of Republicans (25 percent overall) agree with the Birthers in their belief that Obama was “not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president”
    * 38 percent of Republicans (20 percent overall) say that Obama is “doing many of the things that Hitler did”
    * 57 percent of Republicans believe President Obama is a Muslim
    * 24 percent of Republicans believe President Obama may be the AntiChrist

    And it gets worse:

    * 57% of Republicans either believe or are not sure that health care reform is a diabolical government plot to create death panels
    * 91% of conservative Republicans call Obama a socialist, Marxist, communist, or fascist
    * 72% of Republicans either think or haven’t made up their minds about whether Obama was born in the USA. 42% are solid birthers
    * 80% of Republicans support extending the Patriot Act
    * 67% of Republicans oppose the choice of a public health insurance option (only 40% of all Americans oppose)
    * 70% of Republicans oppose a woman’s right to chose having an abortion
    * 60% of Republicans oppose making it easier for workers to organize
    * 60% of Republicans are creationists
    * Only 6% of scientists are Republican
    * 68% of Republicans are not at all concerned about Climate Change
    * Only 23% of Republicans believe in natural evolution
    * Only 38% of Republicans support funding embryonic stem cell research

I shit you not. Somehow Republicans are still running the CIA in Duff’s World, despite the fact that Democrats control two branches of the US government (and half of the third branch) and Leon (freakin’) Panetta (for Pete’s sake) runs the CIA. The reason Republicans are blowing up Moscow commuters; they don’t support embrionic stem cell research? Really?

And, oh, if you go to his article, you’ll notice that his links to the above statistics go to places like the Daily Kos – good non-partisan sources.

Shades of the faked moon-landings, in an earlier article, Duff claims that the Marjah operation in Afghanistan last month never happened. His reasoning?

Can anyone prove it? Nobody had ever heard of Marjah before or even knew a city was there. Nobody knew it was a Taliban stronghold either.

So because Duff, who was a Lance Corporal S-3 clerk forty years ago, never heard of the city, it never existed.

The other day, some folks decided they wanted to defend Gordon Duff’s idiot theories and unsourced proclamations. I will consistently call BS on anything Duff writes.

  • Hutaree’s party preference

    Everyone has been emailing me to say that the sole registered voter of the Hutaree militia group is a Democrat. Yes, it’s ironic, especially given Mark Potok’s unfortunate (for him) comments earlier this week. This is from the Toledo Blade by way of Ace of Spades;

Jacob J. Ward, 33, of Huron, Ohio, voted as a Democrat in the 2004 and 2008 primary elections. He also voted in 10 other elections since 2000. Party affiliation in Ohio is determined by which party’s ballot they requested in the most recent primary election.

Ringleader David Stone hasn’t voted since 2004 – so what’s he got to bitch about? Seems to me that if you can’t take a couple of hours out of your life to vote, you should keep your lazy mouth shut and suffer the election results in silence. But Ward’s primary ballot result might have been an attempt to astroturf the election, ya know. But primafacie (I think that means “right in front of your stupid face”) evidence is currently against Potok
