  • Today’s deep DUmmy thoughts

    Claymore, demented person that he is, comes back from a recon of the Democratic Underground this morning with the latest gems;

    All of those people my age who are wistful for the “good old days” are just racists and misogynists who want to hang Negroes from trees and beat their wives and kids. Now my friend, Elmer, is Black and whenever we start slamming back brews, we both get wistful for the “good old days” – now I wonder what Elmer is thinking.

    Did you know that the Russian spy case is just a Bush phony set up to embarrass the President? DU knows it why don’t you?

    You folks who declare your right to own a firearm…well, that’s just racist codewords for overthrowing the current President and you should all be declared traitors and tossed in jail.

    Poor Al Gore and his unrequited 2d chakra.

    It was OK for the Kennedy tribe, what’s wrong with it now?

    Well at least they’re all over there instead of pestering real people. It seems to me that the folks at DU were a bit more coherent in the Bush years.

  • Encouraging a race war

    I really don’t know what people are thinking. Courtland Milloy, a columnist for the Washington Post wrote a piece last week entitled “Tolerance of white militias exemplifies racial double standard” in which he teams up with our dearest buddy, Mark Potok, to fan the flames of a race war;

    Since Obama took office last year, the number of white militias has shot up from about 170 to more than 500, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors extremist groups in the United States. Armed with enough firepower to take on a police department, some of these groups are honing their sniper skills using photographs of Obama for target practice.

    They cling to the delusion that the nation’s first black president is somehow a subversive working for Muslim extremists, and they aim to bring him down.

    “If the people we saw running around armed to the teeth were black, I think their organizations would be destroyed in a matter of hours,” Mark Potok, director of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project, told me. “If people saw on their TV screens photos of black militia members shooting at images of a white president, I don’t think they would last.”

    Of course Potok sees racists in his closet and under his bed. That 500 number of “hate groups” is completely manufactured as we’ve shown in the past. If the number is manufactured, so is Potok’s and Milloy’s fear. And Milloy admits that his false outrage was ginned up by Chris Matthew’s “The Rise Of The New Right” propaganda piece.

    As Potok said, “There’s a huge amount of anger, and what we are really lacking at this moment is a kind of spark.”

    It appears to me that Potok is more than willing to provide that spark. Potok’s manufactured outrage and tendency for hyperbole as a fund raising scheme has the potential to create unreasonable fear on both sides of his hoped-for war. If some crackpot tried to warn about the rise of Leftwing terrorists in the pages of the Washington, they’d have been unceremoniously tossed out on their ear. So why is Milloy allowed to churn out this crap?

  • History repeating itself.

    So, once again the group “Rethink Afghanistan” is doing it best to display that nothing has gone right in Afghanistan since 2001 has put out a video showing the comments from the General McCrystal’s aides.

    Some of the better quotes so far.

    The problem is it is an unjust war.Taliban stopped poppy growth. NATO protects the poppy.Bush never proved Bin Laden guilty. Taliban asked for proof he did 911. Democracy demands proof of a crime. The war is plain terrorism.

    Or this one that suggested that the General was thinking about killing the President.

    I actually read the Rolling Stones story today, do you know when McCrystal was at West Point and wrote for the newspaper there he wrote a fictional story on assassinating a US President in the Oval office. Now, tell me how the Obama Administration missed that one. Let’s not forget the Pat Tillman (hero) mess where the General wrote that … See MoreTillman died at the hands of the Taliban when it was friendly fire that killed him. Oh, and talk about torturing prisoners in Iraqi. He would actually visit the prisons and oversaw the illegal acts against war prisoners. Yes, he is an effective military first strike man who knows how to kill better than any of the rest, but he needed to go. You don’t out TOP SECRETS just to embarrass the President’s Administration. GET OUT of all wars in other countries unless we are attacked or an attack is being planned on the US and its interest.

    But for the most part it can be summed up in this cartoon.

  • The disconnect between the military and civilians

    Language warning – because I hate hippies so fucking much.
    TSO sent us this article from Frank Schaeffer in the Huffington Post entitled “McChrystal’s Disdain: Symptom of a Mercenary Force With Few Ties to Civilian Leaders”. Apparently Schaeffer’s claim to fame is that he wrote two books about how hippies don’t get military service. The first was in response to his son joining the Marines;

    As a typical member of the white upper middle classes, as a writer living in Boston and as someone who never served, I was shocked by his choice.

    My son John and I wrote a book describing our journey together to a place where I came to value the military and he came to understand my post-Vietnam parental anxiety….

    Yeah, there’s the disconnect, dipshit – some of us are called to the profession while others write idiot books about fucking “journeys”. I don’t know what this clown thought being white had to do with military service when the majority of people in the military are white – like the rest of America. But I digress….

    In 1976, most of the military identified as Independent, while 33 percent identified as Republican (still a larger proportion than the general public). But the armed services have abandoned this neutrality. Now 60 percent considered themselves Republican, and only seventeen percent considered themselves Independent.

    What happened after 1976, numbnuts? Well, the first thing that happened the following year was your idiot hippie President gave amnesty to all of the other hippies that dodged the draft and fled to Canada and just generally and flagrantly thumbed their noses at honorable service to the country. Your idiot hippie president demeaned service in the military – and then he let the members of the military slide into poverty with paltry pay raises and barracks conditions that made us long for conditions like Walter Reed’s outpatient barracks. Oh, but he did give us a huge pay raise – a month before the 1980 election.

    Ronald Reagan gave us pay raises, improved our living conditions, gave us new equipment, defined our mission, gave us the resources to train to a standard related to the mission…all the while, Democrats in Congress complained that he was spending the country into debt while their useless welfare programs poured money into the streets. How would you expect us to act?

    When we finally got a chance to rebuild the image of the country in Honduras, Nicaragua, Grenada, Panama, Iraq and we toppled the Soviet Empire, all we heard was whining from Democrats while they continued to pour money into the streets of a welfare nation.

    Schaeffer ends his little treatise with this;

    We now have a civilian leadership with no military experience in charge of a mercenary professional force with few personal (let alone empathetic) ties to our leaders.

    And that force is no longer protecting America only but rather projecting imperial overreach that will lead to more and more loss of American lives for no reason. Expect more trouble.

    You hippie fucks didn’t want to be bothered with military service so you protested the draft – the only thing that disrupted your perfect little impetuous lives and now you tremble in fear when one general expresses regret that the president doesn’t take his advice? I don’t see Schaeffer running down to the recruiting office to help avoid this problem. Just like when he was a younger hippie, he’s punting the problem off to someone else to rectify…all the while taking cheap shots at the military which he now warns is an “imperial” power (how far back in his hippie vocabulary was that word?) Would he hesitate before calling his son an imperialist? Those generals he fears are someone else’s sons, no different from his own.

    These fucking hippies with kids in the military should shut their fucking traps.

  • Elaine Brower and irony

    Here’s your morning blood pressure check sent to us by someone. It’s from Elaine Brower’s Memorial Day visit to Coney Island. I profiled Elaine once before here, and posted her video of her shouting “Baby killers!” at some other Marines on Coney Island;

    She calls some Marines “murderers” while they’re putting on a demonstration for the tourists. In between the name calling, Brower shouts that her son did three tours in the war so I suppose that somehow she thinks she has some kind of absolute moral authority to call other mothers’ sons murderers.

    Brower with Chiroux

    That’s her with Matthis. He burned the flag while she shouted “This is what we think of this country”. In my opinion, she’s just waiting for someone to punch her in the throat so she can play a victim on a whole new level.

    The one time she summoned the courage to come to TAH, she threatened that her son would set us straight – we’re still waiting, Elaine.

  • Zombie: Islamists and radicals protest Israeli ship in CA

    Zombie sent us this link yesterday, and I just forgot about it what with all the stuff going on hereabouts. According to Zombie groups that the San Francisco Chronicle calls “unions and peace groups” are blocking the unloading of a ship in Oakland which has committed the unforgivable crime of being owned by an Israeli company. Now I don’t see any icons of peace groups in this picture, do you?

    Zombie lists the groups at the article on Pajama Media.

  • DU changes rules to conform to a non-Bush environment

    Claymore gave me the secret signal this morning (three tugs at the rope, then two tugs) and I pulled him up from the Democratic Underground sewer where he seems to spend way too much time. He reports that DU has had to change their rules since Obama is the president and it seems that way too many denizens of DU are being vocal about their displeasure with his administration.

    The DU Administrators have long been frustrated with the persistent undercurrent of negativity and conflict here, which has been exacerbated by the lack of a common villain in the form of George W. Bush. But we have been reluctant to make changes to the way we run the site out of fear that we might do more harm than good. The problems we face are extraordinarily complicated, and despite (or perhaps because of) nearly a decade of administering this site we tend to be fairly skeptical of our own ability to effect broad-based changes that will improve DU for the majority of our members.

    But here are some the new rules designed to effect a broad based change among the turdbats;

    { } Inappropriate attacks against Democrats
    – Insults against prominent Democrats, such as “Fuck Obama.”
    – Name-calling against prominent Democrats. Calling Barack Obama “Barry” or some other name.
    – Repeating Republican partisan attacks against Democrats.
    – Broadly suggesting that there is no difference between Barack Obama and George W. Bush, or that there is no difference between Democrats and Republicans. (Arguing that specific policies are the same would be permitted.)
    – Suggesting that President Obama has perpetrated a “con job” or “fraud,” or similarly over-the-top assertions of bad faith.
    – Advocating voting against Democrats, or in favor of third-party or GOP candidates.
    – Broad-brush smears against Democrats generally. Broad expressions of contempt toward Democrats generally.

    See, none of that would effect Democratic Underground, the kind of one-dimensional examination of facts which spawned the Great Chicken Wire Twin Towers Experiment – actually, their crowning glory. I wonder what the reaction would be if I established rules like that around here?

  • Olbermann getting heat from his fans. Takes ball. Goes home.

    Apparently, after ganging up on Obama the other night after the president’s speech, The Keith Olbermann accidently ran into criticism from his fans on the Daily Kos;

    “Can’t verify”… “haven’t checked”…It can’t be verified because it’s nonsense, and it wasn’t checked because nobody bothered. Unfortunately there’s been a lot of this here lately.

    The Cornell Ag School grad was peeved that anyone on the left would give him grief, even when they thinks he’s wrong.

    If I can understand people’s frustration with seeing a speech by a Democratic president criticized in a venue such as mine, why is it impossible for some people here to accept my frustration about the speech? You don’t agree with me, fine. You don’t want to watch because you don’t agree with me, fine. But to accuse me, after five years of risking what I have to present the truth as I see it, of staging something for effect, is deeply offensive to me and is an indication of what has happened here.

    “Deeply offensive”. He just admitted that he only presents “the truth as I see it” – as if there’s a different truth for each of it, instead one actual truth for everyone.

    So, since you can’t accept Keith as he is, he’s taking his Daily Kos ball and going home;

    You want Cheerleaders? Hire the Buffalo Jills. You want diaries with conspiracy theories, go nuts. If you want this site the way it was even a year ago, let me know and I’ll be back.

    Keith, didn’t you hear? They don’t want you back if you’re going to say things they don’t want to hear.

    I’m glad it’s not just the Right blogs falling apart in the Time of Obama.
