Title says it all: “Police: Man Sets Himself on Fire Displaying a Burning Cross”
Sheesh.

While not successful in his quest to join the illustrious Darwin Award nominee brigade, this gent, who comes to us courtesy of the Pekin (IL) Times was clocked doing 140 mph on a motorcycle. For whatever reason, he stopped after blowing through a red light and attempting to evade when the police finally caught up to him:
Maybe Adam Lester really had to go to the bathroom.
That’s what Lester, 26, told the police officer who had just clocked his motorcycle at 140 mph Tuesday night on the McNaughton Bridge, police said.
He had to wait until the officer took him to police headquarters under arrest for speeding more than 40 mph over the limit and fleeing and attempting to elude police, both misdemeanors, as well as other traffic violations.
The officer also cited Lester, of 18384 Thompson St. in rural Pekin, for endangering the safety of a minor, the 16-year-old girl who clung to him as his passenger on the high-speed ride. That charge, however, was not included among those a prosecutor filed Wednesday in Tazewell County Circuit Court.
County court records show Lester has been cited for speeding three other times since Sept. 11. He also was convicted of speeding three times, along with other traffic violations, between 2008-10, records show.
Yup–bathroom break. Now personally, while he’s facing several charges, none apparently felonies at this point, if that were my 16-year old daughter, after I got done with her for hanging out with such a loser I’d be doing a little wall-to-wall counseling on his dumb ass.
Young men and speed is nothing new–hell, I don’t know how many guys we lost when I was but a young nuke in Orlando many years ago, and the resulting safety courses that came about as a result. More recently, a co-worker who SHOULD have known better was going home from work with a female passenger in excess of 120 mph in Exeter when he failed to negotiate a curve. The police started to give chase but failed to notice he hadn’t made the curve, and the bodies of he and his girlfriend weren’t even noticed until the next morning. If you feel so inclined to turn yourself into a greasy spot on the road, by all means, be my guest. But when you do it on a public road with other people on it, with a passenger, not only are you an idiot, you’re an asshole too.
Beretverde sends us a link to an article from the news that the South Carolina state fair officials are changing some of their policies after they experienced some violence this past weekend;
Starting Tuesday, those who are under the age of 18 must have a parent aged 21 or older with them if they wish to enter the gates after 7 p.m. A similar policy was in place, but it allowed a parent or guardian to be accompanied by more than one child under the age of 16.
The fair also says anyone 18 and over may be required to show a valid driver’s license or other photo ID as proof of age to be admitted after 7 p.m.
At the advice of law enforcement, those wearing camouflage clothing and headwear may be refused admission.
Emphasis is mine.
Well, it all makes sense now – that’s why war is so violent, everyone is wearing camouflage.
There’s an article in the UK’s Daily Mail that links to a Glamour Magazine article from an Air Force lieutenant’s whining-ass story of her trip to Afghanistan. I don’t why she thought it would be of interest to anyone or why Glamour would bother to publish it. It’s actually worse than wading through Kayla William’s book and I never thought I’d say that;
In the November issue of Glamour magazine, she details how ‘long hours’, ‘drab meals of dry meat and soggy vegetables’ and constant ‘paranoia’ that something could happen at any moment, gradually took a toll on her mental state during deployment.
[…]
Limited internet and phone service added to her feelings of vulnerability as did the fact she was a woman in predominantly a man’s world.
The the pretty brunette said that sexual assault a constant worry for her on the front line, because she ‘knew the stories’ and ‘overheard vulgar talk.’
[…]
And back at her desk job as a public affairs officer, she found it difficult to maintain focus because ‘everything seemed trivial’ in light of what she’d been through.
I’ll tel you what, she’s not doing any favors for those women who want to be in combat jobs, or the Air Force folks, for that matter. It sounds like every pogue I’ve ever heard talk about how tough their deployments were, or their time in Graf or Hohenfels for a few weeks. I think she’d better brace herself, because if she thought that being a Public Affairs officer in Afghanistan was tough, I think she’s going to have it tougher when more people read this article.
vShe was eventually diagnosed with chronic adjustment disorder – a milder form of post-traumatic stress disorder.
I’m pretty sure that everything she has is milder than anyone else.
On Tuesday morning, seven National Park Service employees were seen erecting and tending to a barricade around the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C. One NPS employee was operating a forklift. There usually aren’t any NPS employees working at the World War II memorial.
A couple hours later, when an Honor Flight of World War II veterans arrived, accompanied by Democratic and Republican members of Congress, the fences blocking the memorial were easily moved away, allowing the veterans to enter.
But the barriers are still at the memorial, and they’ve been reinforced. This morning, I walked by the memorial and noticed that wires had been used to tie the fences together:
Good grief…
Okay, so this reporter was never in the military, but other than Army Posts suddenly becoming Army bases and Commissaries becoming grocery stores, the point is the same…
Grocery stores on Army bases in the U.S. are closed. The golf course at Andrews Air Force base is open.
The CinC needs to play golf more than you active duty guys and gals (and retirees) need to get groceries…..well, you can just go off “base” and pay more for that turd sandwich covered in awesome sauce…since you’re still getting paid by the almighty’s good graces and all…(Should I close the sarc tag here?)

The above picture is a screen shot of Mt Vernon’s homepage. The home of George Washington is privately funded, with my money that I donate every year because I love that place. Although the grounds and home are open to the public, parking lots are closed because the open spaces are owned jointly by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association and the National Park Service. So, yeah, you can go to Mount Vernon, but you can’t park there.

I think that’s the most petty bullshit. How much government funding goes into those parking lots on a given day? Parking is free and unfettered by attendants or Park Service personnel. It’s a parking lot.

Andy sends us a link to WPTV which tells the story of Joseph Lohman who stood on the street with an upside down flag in his Marine uniform to protest the shut down. According to the article, Lohman is disabled, and he may be, but on that little rack of ribbons he’s wearing (thank goodness he didn’t add more than he earned, obviously) there are no campaign ribbons, so he must’ve been injured in training.
A disabled veteran expressed his disappointment in the federal government shutdown by holding a U.S. flag upside down along a busy street.
Joseph Lohman, 25, of Beech Grove, said he stood in full uniform on a sidewalk near Interstate 465 for more than 12 hours.
Lohman said that when the government shutdown started early Tuesday, he decided holding the flag upside down would be a way to express his concern about what the shutdown will mean for veterans, their checks and health care.
“I’m not protesting. I’m just standing up for what’s right,” Lohman said. “With the government shutdown, the flag is flown upside down to show that America is in distress, and we are.”
Well, then go put on jeans and hold a sign because holding a flag upside down in uniform is wholly inappropriate. The hippies at IVAW did the same thing in uniform and they claimed that it was for the same reason. It was wrong then and it’s wrong in this case, or any case. When you’re on a boat and it’s sinking, hang the flag upside down, don’t do it for it political statements.
