  • Another NY Weapon Seizure

    Well, it seems as if NY authorities are at it again.  They’ve confiscated yet another weapon from a state citizen.

    This case was a bit different than the norm, though.

    Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office officials confiscated the weapon from Brian Malta.  Seems as if he’d fired it, albeit while loaded with blank charges, towards neighboring homes during a dispute with neighbors.

    The weapon confiscated was a Civil War cannon.  Seems Malta had aimed it in the direction of his neighbors’ homes and fired it (with powder charge and wadding only) during his dispute with his neighbors.

    Yeah, firing a freaking cannon towards someone’s house – even if only powder and wadding – is likely to get you a visit from the police, as well as an escorted ride to the station.  Dumbass.

    Malta was charged with 3 counts of harassment and 3 counts of menacing.  He was arrested and later released on bail.

    No, the amount of his bail wasn’t set at $5150.  Though that might have been apropos.  (smile)

  • NM Vets end protester’s disruption

    NM Vets

    The picture above is from the Albuquerque Journal and it shows veterans dragging off a protestor during a Veterans’ Day speech being given by Governor Susana Martinez. The man was protesting against abortion, something I can identify with, but a Veterans’ Day speech is not the time nor the place;

    “He was certainly agitated, confrontational and on the edge of violence,” Perry said. “I think everyone in the audience thought it was disrespectful.”

    The man’s sign read “Ban Late Term Abortion,” according to KOAT-TV.

    Albuquerque voters will decide next Tuesday whether the city will ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, igniting contentious debate between opposing sides. Early voting on the measure is under way.

    Perry said the governor’s security didn’t jump in until after the group of about eight veterans grabbed the man. The man was about 15 feet from the governor and his shouts of “abortion” could be heard even after he was escorted from the venue.

    Dude has 364 days in the year to protest all he wants at the Governor’s events, he can use one of those. In fact, he can request a copy of her schedule here. Yeah, you have a right to express your opinions anywhere and anytime, but your free speech ends where the rest of us have a right to listen to someone else’s speech.

  • Déjà Screwed

    I swear, sometimes I think every freakin’ day is Groundhog Day when it comes to our Federal government.  They simply don’t seem to learn a damn thing from past fiascos.

    Well, at least the current Administration doesn’t.

    Remember the Lifeline fiasco I wrote about the other day – that “free phone” program where the Federal government depended for years on unchecked self-certification to determine eligibility?  Remember how well that worked out?

    Wanna guess how the Federal government is going to determine whether people qualify for tax credits under the new Patently Phoney Patient Privacy and Absurd  ‘Affordable’ Care Abomination Act next year?  C’mon – take a guess.

    But hey, I’m gonna be a hardass here.  You only get one guess.

    If you guessed “self-certification with no requirement for backup documentation or cross-checking” – AKA the “honor system” – give yourself a freaking gold star.  ‘Cause that’s exactly how the Federal government plans to hand out PPACA-related tax credits next year.

    Until last year, that’s the same method the Federal government used to determine eligibility for Lifeline phones.  Based on early indications from imposing cross-checking and requiring annual re-certification, looks like that program had about a 41% fraud rate.

    It’s also how the Federal government determines eligibility today for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).  That program is estimated to lose 20-25% of its total annual outlays to fraud.

    Ya know, I kinda think I’m seeing a pattern here.  But maybe it’s just me.

    Predictably, the FBI expects to see fraud related to this new tax credit – a LOT of fraud.  They’re currently estimating we’ll see on the order of $20 billion in healthcare tax credit fraud next year.  I think that might be in the ballpark – for the first year.  Then it will skyrocket.  And it’s possible that estimate could be way low for the first year, too.

    Looks like it really is “Here we go again.”  And remember:  that’s yet another “bennie” to the US taxpayer, courtesy of the PPACA.  So just grit your teeth and bend over.

    Yeah, that’s courtesy of the PPACA, too.

  • YGBSM!!

    Obama right now, where Obama is is right around where Reagan was, right around where Nixon was. There, he’s no more left than those, those, those Republicans.

    . . . Obama’s right around where Bob Dole is. They’re very similar, you know? There’s not much of a difference there.

    So sayeth that great “sage for the ages”, Rob Reiner.  You probably remember him best as “Mike Stivic” from the 1970s TV show All In the Family.

    So, you say Obama’s politically right around where Nixon and Reagan were?  And about the same politically as Dole?

    Yeah, right (pun noted and intended).  Uh-huh.  Riiiiiiiight.  Sure, fella.

    Hell, even Edith ain’t buying that one.  (smile)

    Apparently Archie Bunker was dead-on-target when he chose the nickname for Reiner’s character on the show – but was talking about Reiner himself, not the character.  Think much, Rob?

    GMAFB.  And quit p!ssing on my leg and claiming it’s rain, too.

  • Stupid Terrorist Tricks

    Headline says it all:

    Suicide Bomber Blows Himself Up on Empty Mediterranean Beach

    Seems as if he was observed and chased away from the hotel he was apparently targeting.  So he fled to an empty beach nearby – and executed his one-way mission.  Solo.

    A second suicide bomber, possibly in a separate and unrelated attack, was reportedly noted and disarmed by Tunisian security forces before he could execute his mission (or anyone else).  Good job, guys.

    Wonder if you still get “72 virgins” if you only take yourself out – or fail in your mission completely?  (smile)

  • Do-gooders bother me

    My hippie chick code monkey sends us this link. Some busybody in Fargo, ND is going to put fat kids’ parents on notice that The Village is watching by handing out this letter to kids on Hallowe’en tomorrow night that she thinks are chunky;

    Do-gooder BS1

    “I just want to send a message to the parents of kids that are really overweight… I think it’s just really irresponsible of parents to send them out looking for free candy just ’cause all the other kids are doing it,” the woman said in a morning radio interview with Y-24. She wouldn’t identify herself.

    The letter states: “You child is, in my opinion, moderately obese and should not be consuming sugar and treats to the extent of some children this Halloween season.”

    It continues: “My hope is that you will step up as a parent and ration candy this Halloween and not allow your child to continue these unhealthy eating habits.”

    No matter how nicely she tries to write it, she still comes off as a scold. If she doesn’t want to give out candy, she should just turn off her light and not answer the door instead of being the neighborhood hag. Or hand out apples or something. She didn’t identify herself, but I’m sure you’ll be able to find her house on the morning of November 1st.

  • Disciplinary Crackdown

    I’ll just leave this one here.  You might want to read it when no kids are around.

    US Military Cracks Down On Troop Masturbation In Afghanistan

    I’m guessing this is a joke.  If so, it’s good to see that the troops still have a sense of humor.  (smile)

    And if it’s not a joke:  I think the author of this policy has just self-identified a billet – and an individual – that are prime candidates for elimination during the upcoming drawdown.  They obviously don’t have a meaningful mission.

  • TNNG shooting near Memphis

    Pinto Nag and Chief Tango send us a link to real workplace violence episode near Memphis involving a couple of National Guardsmen who were training on a Navy base. Apparently, there was some kind of dispute and a guardsman went to his car and got a pistol, shot two others and succumbed to a tackling by other guardsmen before anyone else could get hurt;

    One guardsman was shot in the foot and the other in the leg, the official said.

    The incident did not take place on the base, the Naval Support Activity Midsouth in Millington, but at the armory, which is on Navy property.

    […]

    The wounds to the two victims, who were transported to the regional medical center, were not life threatening, officials said.

    The suspected shooter was in custody in the Millington jail, a former Navy brig.

    Apparently, this is the most important part that you should remember;

    “This is not Navy related,” the military official told NBC News.

    Whew! I was worried about that.
