  • Asylum, Germany and US

    Ok it should be noted that I have mixed feelings about this issue. So with that in mind lets get stated.

    Homeschooling: German Family Gets Political Asylum in U.S.

    “It’s our fundamental right to decide how we want to teach our children,” says Uwe Romeike, an Evangelical Christian and a concert pianist who sold his treasured Steinway to help pay for the move.

    Romeike decided to uproot his family in 2008 after he and his wife had accrued about $10,000 in fines for homeschooling their three oldest children and police had turned up at their doorstep and escorted them to school. “My kids were crying, but nobody seemed to care,”

    It would seem like a straight forward issue except that can homes schooling be as effective as standard schooling be it public or private? It the parents are quoted that it would cost too much to send too to private schools. But I have to ask if they cannot afford the money of sending to a private school, then how can they afford only one working parent? Not to mention of keeping the teacher parent certified that anything taught will be taken seriously. Also there is the social issue

    “No parental couple can offer a breadth of education [that can] replace experienced teachers,” says Kraus, of the German Teachers’ Association. “Kids also lose contact with their peers.”

    I noticed that about one person that was being home schooled back in the 90s. Acted like he was in elementary school and we where both suppose to be at Freshmen level of High school. Just a lot of concepts and language that was totally different.

    One of the Romeikes’ concerns was about their kids getting bullied. But their main objection involved what was being taught in the classroom. “The curriculum goes against our Christian values,” Uwe says. “German schools use textbooks that force inappropriate subject matter onto young children and tell stories with characters that promote profanity and disrespect.”

    Ok, so what happens when they have to face it in the workplace or outside of school, not to mention if they ever have to be in charge of people. Also the article does not go into what specific they opposite in the classroom.

    Then I read this and it caught my eye. Sounded like something right out of a IVAW play book.

    So why did he seek asylum in the U.S. rather than relocate to nearby Austria or another European country that allows homeschooling? Romeike’s wife Hannelore tells TIME the family was contacted by the Virginia-based Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), which suggested they go to the U.S. and settle in Morristown, Tenn. The nonprofit organization, which defends the rights of the U.S. homeschooling community

    Except that I am sure that this will cause the same issues and problems that our favorate Asylum seeking IVAW member Andre Shepard

    “It’s very unusual for people from Western countries to be granted asylum in the U.S.,” says David Piver, an immigration attorney with offices in a Philadelphia suburb and Flagstaff, Ariz. In 2008, the most recent year for which data are available, only five Germans received asylum in the U.S. (The Justice Department declined to comment on specific cases.) Piver, who is not involved in the Romeike case, predicted the U.S. government would appeal the decision “so as not to offend a close ally.”

    So rather then trying for a place where they have a better chance of being granted asylum but now because they are going to do this by a group that I am willing to bet sees this as more of a political move then of a concern of the children and parents. Not to mention that that diplomatic issues between Germany and our government are going to slow things down to a crawl. Andre’s hearing was in early 2009 and still no ruling on his case. Even then it will be in a constant cycle of appeals. I imagine the same thing for this German couple to the point where that they will be off in college before the ruling is decided.

    There could be other issues here that have not be brought up but just because it is banned does not mean that it is the right choice automatically.

  • Coolest woman alive

    I know you don’t care, but Sade has released her first album in 11 years. I don’t usually give a rat’s ass about entertainers, but Sade has to be the coolest woman alive. Her stage presence is just so….cool. She’s not a stunning beauty or anything, but between her voice and the way she moves just gets to me. And I think her band is one of the best jazz bands ever.

    Well, TSO gets to post his rapping Irish dwarf pimp witches’ songs, so listen to this during your lunch;

  • I hate tax season

    I just do that’s all. They gave me a pittance for a tax credit and I have to beg for my own money back. I hate tax season.

  • Odds and Ends

    OK, so TSO is feeling better today, I left my cranky pants at home. Nothing major to write about, just a couple of things to ask/write about, and rather do an omnibus post that a bunch of independant junk.

    1) Any of our readers play the board game Diplomacy? I am looking for a place to play online, and the place I used to go to play it seems offline. For those who haven’t played Diplomacy, it is a phenomenal game, sort of a thinking man’s Risk. It was allegedly the favorite game of JFK and Kissinger. Anyway, if anyone out there plays, or knows of a place that has online judges, kindly let me know.

    2) I was uber-psyched after work yesterday to go home and watch me some TV. Obviously I was a bit fired up yesterday, probably on account of the 4 bowls of Cookie Crisp I had at lunch…well, that and the fact that I am still offended by how that corpulent Oklahoma lawyer is fleecing folks. Anyway, Wednesday is my favorite TV night because my two favorite shows are on, although unfortunately at the same time. I usually watch Psych, and DVR Mantracker. Every time Caro and I get together we watch Psych together, and I think it is the best written show on TV today.

    But everytime I say I love watching Mantracker everyone always asks how often I watch the Gay TV station. Now, admittedly I have a bit of a mancrush on the Mantracker, but who wouldn’t? Dude is the shi’ite. Anyway, watch this quick video, maybe you will get hooked too. I own every season on DVD.

    Oh, and just to make yesterday a complete wash, I couldn’t watch Psych because my cable kept pixilating (sp?) the USA network. So don’t spoil it for me by telling me how Shawn and Jules hooked up.

    3) I am currently reading an outstanding book entitled The Only Thing Worth Dying For: How Eleven Green Berets Forged a New Afghanistan, by Eric Blehm. The publicist very kindly sent me a copy to review, the first such time that has happened. Now, I haven’t read far enough to do a proper book review yet, but my preliminary statement is: Go out and buy this book. Seriously, it will give you a depth of understanding about Hamid Karzai that you didn’t have before. I worked on Karzai’s protective detail for a while in Ghan, and talked to some of the DynCorps guys that had been his guards for a long time, so I already knew the guy was fearless, but this book will show you how brilliant he is too. If all you read is how corrupt the Karzai Gov’t is, and how they are untamable etc etc etc, go deeper into the story and read this. You’ll get a stronger appreciation of just what he faces over there, and how dedicated he is to creating a free Afghanistan. My key emotional feeling when reading it is shame that I wasn’t tough enough to make the SF, but so it goes. You guys seldom listen to me, but you really ought to purchase and digest this book.

  • The Few, The Proud…

    sanmateo

    …the incredibly bored and stupid.

    These are Marines with 5th Marine Regiment out of Camp Pendleton (San Mateo), which is being hit by the worst storm in a decade. I miss working with people like this…

  • Sorry, I’m zoning

    We finally got all of the contractors out of the house yesterday, it’s 50 degrees outside, the furniture is all in it’s proper place, the stereo is hooked up, I don’t have to go to actual work for a few days, there’s no pressing Google-foo operations and there’s a cold six-pack of Saranac Trail Mix in the new fridge and the grill is hot.

    I’m just basking in the tranquility of a successfully completed final move, another phony soldier busted and a Republican in the Massachusetts Senate seat.

    If you want to complain about my lack of participation today, have at it. Or you can stop by our mountain retreat for beer and pork chops.

    For Olga; The view from the patio – that’s the Potomac Valley with some sort of blue-colored mountains to my west.

  • Mixed tape for Tom

    (Jonn is apparently still down, and I am contractually obligated to cover for him, so you get another shitty/jackass post.)

    tombrady1-2

    As you know, I went through a rough break up yesterday. I could have taken the route every other chick dude takes, you know, eat ice cream, talk to my girlfriends about what a dick he was, go out and have random sex with a returning GI…. But instead, I decided to make him a mixed tape of all the songs that make me think of him.

    Well, actually all the songs that make me think of him that are covered by youtube people on ukuleles. So, Tom, if you read this, I miss you. Oh, and I miss the early [edit] 2000’s when you had a high fucking passer rating and 3 superbowl victories. (Not to put too fine a point on it.)

    [NOTE: Audio on first one is really low]

  • Thank goodness it’s a new year

    I’m with my buddy Val Prieto at Babalu Blog, I just couldn’t wait for 2009 to end. But all-in-all it’s been a good year for This Ain’t Hell thanks to all of you.

    Our biggest stories of the year were;

    1. The Inauguration Ball that (a) Obama attended (b) Obama didn’t attend, but so what, Joe Biden did, (c) was cancelled.

    2. The Fort Hood shooter’s Officer Record Brief which stopped the media and the Army in thier tracks trying to paint him as a multi-tour combat veteran who went berserk at the thought of returning. Apparently we revived him, too.

    3. Who can forget TSO getting pissed at the DHS memo?

    4. COB6 holds the long-term traffic record for a picture he posted of Angie Harmon – we still get about 1200 hits/month to that picture.

    5. We can hardly forget Carl Webb and Matthis Chiroux who generated a lot of traffic for us. Thanks for being such sociopaths, guys.

    There was the time I saw Michelle Malkin and she remembered my name. And the time I posted a video of Joe the Plumber at a Tea Party and Hot Air and Breitbart linked it (without giving me credit). Smoking cigars with 509th Bob, (then LT) Nixon and Hooper at a Tea Party. Jimbo and me going to give grief to Lyndie England and she chickened out – so we drank beer instead. The time we raffled off Jamie.

    I got to drink gallons of beer with Tankerbabe and Olga this year. I got yelled at by Genevieve Chase. I finally got to tell the USO Girls exactly what I think of them to their cute faces. I got to give Bill Roggio a drunk hug. I got hauled off to jail with furry handcuffs by Mrs. Grayhawk. We got to welcome Sporkmaster back from his tour of Iraq. I smoked cigars with Ponsdorf and Scott Swett.

    You guys got TSO a new job. And we were in the funny papers;

    dbs-cartoon

    We went over a million unique visitors in October and you guys have made about 20,000 comments. Oh, and we came in fourth in the Milblog portion of the Weblog Awards behind the three best milblogs on the net – who could ask for more than that?

    Matt Burden, Blackfive himself, wrote about us in an industry magazine “Sometimes hillarious, sometimes deadly serious, This Ain’t Hell writes tough about tough issues.” I want that on my tombstone.

    Yeah, it was a pretty good year, but I’m glad it’s over. Thanks to all of our readers for sticking it out with us and thanks to the bloggers who think that what we say is important enough to repeat to their readers. Most of all, thanks to COB6 and TSO for taking the time to help me build this tiny corner of the internet.

    I hope your new year will be as great as I expect mine to be. Here’s mud in your eye.

    The following is reposted from last year – give love to the folks who link here;
