  • 500 Infantry troops to Helmand, Afghanistan

    According to Fox News, the Army is sending a battalion of infantrymen, the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry of the 10th Mountain Division to Afghanistan, more specifically, to Helmand Province.

    For the first time since combat operations were declared over at the end of 2014, a battalion of 500 U.S. Army infantrymen is being sent to southern Afghanistan’s volatile Helmand Province where the Taliban have made a comeback, Fox News has learned.

    The decision, confirmed by defense officials, is a sign of military escalation in the country even as the Obama administration tries to draw down.

    […]

    The 500 soldiers will not increase the overall number of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. That number will remain at 9,800, according to defense officials.

    A spokesman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan says the new Army troops will not “participate in combat operations.”

    Apparently, the White House is just now learning that which we warned about here at this blog years ago – drawing down the force in Afghanistan puts those who remain at risk because their security depends on the undependable locals. That infantry battalion will replace the 150 troops who are providing security at the moment. Funny how that works. Not funny ha-ha, though.

    A series of battles in Helmand, one that killed a special forces soldier while he was advising Afghan troops, prompted the decision to beef up security in the region.

  • Somalian terrorist was on the wrong flight

    Somalian terrorist was on the wrong flight

    daallo-airlines

    I read this story on Facebook last week, but it really sounded too good to be true, so I doubted it. I guess my BS detector was malfunctioning that day, because the story is true. It looks like this Somalian terrorist guy got on a Daalo Airlines flight out of Mogadishu Airport. He had a laptop computer that was packed with explosives with him on the flight. He detonated it in the air, then he got sucked out of the hole created by the resulting explosion – the only reported casualty of his own terrorism. No one has taken credit for the attempt, oddly enough.

    Daallo Airlines chief executive, Mohamed Yassin, said most of the passengers who were on the bombed flight were scheduled to fly with Turkish Airlines, but were flown to Djibouti by one of his planes after the Turkish carrier canceled its flight, citing bad weather.

    “That particular passenger (who was behind the blast) boarded the aircraft on a Turkish Airlines boarding pass and was on the list for the Turkish Airlines manifest,” Yassin told Reuters by telephone from Dubai.

    So, not only did the terrorist attack go wrong, from the bombers perspective, anyway, he was on the wrong flight, too. The best laid plans of mice and men…. Apparently, law enforcement found closed circuit television footage of the terrorist being handed the bomb after he went through security checks. But, I’d prefer to walk to another country if I had to fly out of Mogadishu Airport anyway.

  • Clapper; ISIS is experimenting with chemical weapons

    Fox News reports that Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told the Senate Armed Services Committee that he’s been able to confirm that ISIS has been experimenting with mustard gas in Iraq and Syria;

    “[The Syrian government] has used chemicals against the opposition on multiple occasions since Syria joined the Chemical Weapons Convention. ISIL has also used toxic chemicals in Iraq and Syria, including the blister agent Sulfur mustard,” Clapper said.

    He said this marks the first time an extremist group has produced and used a “chemical warfare agent in an attack since Aum Shinrikyo used sarin in Japan in 1995,” referring to the Tokyo subway terror attack that year.

    Fox News previously reported on ISIS’ potential experimentation with chemical weapons. Photos taken by the Kurds in northern Iraq last summer and reviewed by Fox News showed burns and blistering on skin following exposure to “odorless, colorless” agents absorbed through the clothing. A doctor who was in northern Iraq last year said he treated Kurdish fighters whom ISIS used as “lab rats for WMD,” adding that the variety of burns and illnesses suggested that “mustard gas, precursors, as well as neurotoxic acids” were being tested.

    I guess that because no one is really committed to destroying this cancer on our planet, we can expect them to get better, or worse, at killing large numbers of people. They don’t seem constrained by any sort of morality or fairness, so the longer that we score only pin prick victories over ISIS, we can expect them to become more ruthless. They have no trouble using methods that are a thousand years old, so why wouldn’t they be able to find acceptable tactics from a hundred years ago?

    Daniel Seth Franey; Army deserter and ISIS supporter arrested

    Daniel Seth Franey

    Data Dawg sends us a link from Military.com about Daniel Seth Franey who is an Army deserter from 2008, he had about six years of service, and he has expressed his support for ISIS. Franey has been living in western Washington State and he expressed his desire to do a Nidal Hassan-style attack on soldiers at Joint Base Lewis McChord. In that endeavor, he enlisted the aid of FBI informants like everyone does, apparently. He’s forbiden to own firearms because of a permanent order of protection order, so that’s how they snagged him when he took delivery;

    He has a partner and two young children, as well as children with another woman, who obtained a permanent protection order against him in Lake County, Illinois, in 2014. The protection order bars him from possessing guns under federal law, the documents say.

    Franey was arrested without incident Saturday as agents served a “no-knock” search warrant at his home. An affidavit filed in support of the warrant alleged that he had behaved increasingly erratically in recent weeks.

    He was seen driving slowly in a parking lot at the non-operational Satsop Nuclear Power Plant; his visits to the homes of two neighbors prompted calls to 911; he made apparent references to attacking a nearby campground that’s only open to military members, retirees and their families; and he told the undercover agent on Jan. 29, “I do really wanna kill agents,” the affidavit said.

    According to The Olympian, Franey was in the Air Defense Artillery field of endeavor and he had been stationed in Korea and Texas during his time in the Army. The FBI became interested in Franey last year when a couple of residents contacted the Feds about his constant chatter in regards to his intentions to join ISIS and engage in terrorist behavior.

    Five people who have known Franey for some time told the FBI that Franey frequently talked about wanting to buy weapons, kill cops or fight with the Islamic State.

  • Spanish police arrest seven ISIS terrorists

    The Associated Press reports that Spanish police have rounded up seven terrorists this morning. Four are Spanish nationals of Syrian, Moroccan and Jordanian extraction and the others were Syrian and Moroccan citizens living in Spain;

    In a statement, police said the cell was well-organized and coordinated by a ringleader who ran a business that enabled him to ship containers with technological supplies, weapons and military equipment from Spanish ports to armed groups in operating in Syria and Iraq. The cell is suspected of also supplying funds for IS and Jabhat al-Nusra and of money laundering, the statement said.

    The ringleader was also contacted on several occasion by IS urging him to supply women for combatants in Syria and Iraq to marry, “following guidelines set down by the Islamic State group’s leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi,” the statement said.

    Spanish authorities say that they’ve been monitoring the group for more than a year.

    On march 11, 2004, terrorists killed or injured almost 2,000 Spaniards in the famous Madrid Bombing three days before the national elections and voters elected a president that capitulated to terrorist demands to pull Spain out of the Iraq War. In the past year at least a score of terrorists from the war in Iraq and Syria have been arrested in Spain. I guess security from making deals with terrorists has an expiration date.

    Khalil Abu-Rayyan planned terrorism in Michigan

    Khalil Abu-Rayyan

    The Detroit Free Press tells about Khalil Abu-Rayyan, a Dearborn Heights man who claimed to FBI informants that he supported ISIS and intended to commit an act of terrorism in the area. He hasn’t been charged with any terrorist-type crimes, but only because he’d already been arrested for possession of a controlled substance and an illegal firearm. He had initially planned to attack a 6,000 member church and then altered his plan to attack a hospital where his arresting officer was recovering from a heart attack – with the intention of killing the officer;

    “Since May of 2015, the FBI has been conducting an investigation of Khalil Abu-Rayyan regarding increasingly violent threats he has made to others about committing acts of terror and martydom — including brutal acts against police officers, churchgoers and others — on behalf of the foreign terrorist organization Islamic State of Iraqi and Levant.”

    […]

    The FBI had been tracking Abu-Rayyan through social media, phone conversations, and surveillance. He had two Twitter accounts on which he expressed support for ISIS, the FBI said in the complaint.

    Khalil Abu-Rayyan first wanted to attack a church because ‘it’s easy and a lot of people go there. Plus people are not allowed to carry guns in church.’ Huh, imagine that – targeting a gun-free zone. Who would have thought that would happen? One day, one of these guys is going to avoid talking to one of the millions of FBI informants, you know, like those folks in San Bernadino did…and the guy in Chattanooga…and the guy in Little Rock…and the guy in Times Square.

  • Germans warn of terrorists among refugees

    Germans warn of terrorists among refugees

    syria_refugees

    Fox News reports that German federal security agencies are warning of terrorists that have been smuggled into their country disguised as refugees;

    The announcement comes after Berlin police arrested three Thursday in an investigation of four Algerian men who are suspected of planning terror attacks in Germany and having ISIS ties.

    “We have seen repeatedly that terrorists are being smuggled in disguised or camouflaged as refugees,” said Hans-Georg Maassen, the head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution….

    No? Seriously?

    German authorities believe the four men who were investigated Thursday had contacts with ISIS and that at least one of them had received military training in Syria. The arrests were made in Berlin at a refugee home and were based on existing warrants in other cases.

    Who would have thought that allowing hundreds of thousands of military-aged men would be a problem? Well, who besides anyone with half a brain.

  • Justin Sullivan; ISIS in North Carolina

    Justin Sullivan; ISIS in North Carolina

    Justin Sullivan1

    I was looking for feel good stories for tomorrow morning and ran across this story from Morganton, North Carolina where this fellow, Justin Sullivan, a recent convert to Islam, killed a 74-year-old neighbor to steal money from him to buy a modern sporting rifle so that he could kill another 1000 or so folks to show his support for ISIS;

    Sullivan, 19, was arrested last June after plotting to kill up to 1,000 people in support of ISIS, an Islamic terrorist organization. A newly unsealed federal indictment against the Morganton teen now links him directly to the previously unsolved 2014 murder of John Bailey Clark, 74, a neighbor of Sullivan and his parents on Rose Carswell Road.

    Clark was found in a shallow grave near his home. The indictment says Sullivan stole a gun from his stepfather, broke into his elderly neighbor’s home and shot him three times in the head in December 2014.

    “Justin Sullivan had elaborate plans to kill hundreds of innocent people to show his support for the terrorist organization, ISIL,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge John Strong. “During the course of our investigation evidence was uncovered linking Sullivan to John Bailey Clark’s murder six months earlier.”

    Obviously, he missed the part about Islam being a peaceful religion when he converted.

    Clark’s murder came after Sullivan had converted to Islam and began watching beheadings and other violent ISIS acts on the Internet, according to documents. Around that same time, ISIS sent out a worldwide call for attacks against citizens and soldiers of any country involved in the U.S.-led coalition targeting the Islamic group.

    It looks like the FBI was “watching” him at the time of the murder, but not too closely, based on tips from his parents who were “afraid to leave the house” because of his behavior. There’s much more at the link, including a copy of the federal indictment.
