    The Washington Post reports that, for some reason, the State Department claims that the forces arrayed against ISIS in Mosul are ready to bring the hammer down;

    The U.S.-led coalition fighting against the Islamic State has prepared “all the pieces” it needs to take back the Iraqi city of Mosul, and expects military operations there are “rapidly approaching,” a senior State Department official said Friday.

    Brett McGurk, the State Department’s envoy to the coalition, said the mission to take back the city of more than 1 million people will be “a very unpredictable, very dynamic, very uncertain operation.” It will be the most ambitious and complex operation the Iraqi government has undertaken against the Islamic State since it roared across the country in 2014, and include approximately 30,000 Iraqi forces.

    McGurk, speaking at the State Department, said there’s a “humanitarian imperative” to expel the militants from Mosul as soon as possible.

    I don’t know what the State Department knows about fighting wars, they did a fairly piss-poor job managing the war in Vietnam despite the troops winning on the battlefield. I hope this isn’t indicative of things to come – more politician involvement in the war against terror isn’t a good idea. The Obama State Department couldn’t convince the Iraqi government to allow US troops to remain in Iraq and caused the rise of this ISIS beast in the first place.

  • Two injured in latest Brussels terror attack

    A terrorist identified as “Hicham D” managed to stab two Brussels police officers before he was subdued by a third officers and taken into custody, according to CNN;

    “In the framework of the terrorist attack against two police officers in Schaerbeek, a house search was conducted today at the residence of the suspect Hicham D, situated in Schaerbeek, Avenue de la Reine,” the statement [from the prosecutor’s office] said.

    No weapons were found in the search in Belgium’s capital city. The office declined to release further details related to the search.

    None of the injuries were life threatening.

    A 17-year-old French high school student, Stan Racine, witnessed the attack.
    “The suspect pulled out a knife and attacked a policeman, and hurt him in the stomach and leg,” he told CNN. “The policeman then pulled out his pistol and shot the suspect in the leg.”

    Racine said the suspect then shouted something in what he believed was Arabic.

    That Indiana Jones impression gets them every time. I wonder what Arabic phrase he could have shouted that made the Belgians think that it was a terrorist attack?

    SSG Adam Thomas KIA in Afghanistan

    The other day we reported the death of a US service member during operations against ISIS in eastern Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province in the Achin district near the Pakistan border. Today he’s been identified as Staff Sergeant Adam Thomas of Takoma Park, Maryland assaigned to the 10th Special Forces Group. From the Denver Post;

    Thomas, an eight-year member of the Army, was supporting Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

    Thomas entered the Army in April 2008, according to Fort Carson, and had deployed to Iraq in 2008 and to Afghanistan for two tours — one in 2011 and another in June.

    Thomas was the recipient of a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, multiple Army Commendation medals and the National Defense Service Medal, among other accolades.

    He was killed by an IED in operations against ISIS. ISIS has taken credit for his death.

  • Nearly 4 dozen Afghan troops AWOL in the US

    The Pentagon reports that about 44 Afghan soldiers training in the United States have gone over the hill in the past few years, according to Fox News;

    A U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that the frequency of Afghan troops disappearing from military training was truly concerning and “out of the ordinary.” Pentagon spokesman Adam Stump said that eight Afghan troops have left bases without permission.

    “”The Defense Department is assessing ways to strengthen eligibility criteria for training in ways that will reduce the likelihood of an individual Afghan willingly absconding from training in the U.S. and going AWOL,” Stump said.

    Afghans who train at U.S. military bases are vetted to make sure they don’t have a sketchy background or ties to militant groups in the Middle East, Stump added. The defense official told Reuters there was no evidence that those who vanished posed any threat to the U.S.

    Well, that’s reassuring. Most of the Afghans who killed US troops in Afghanistan during the surge of green-on-blue insider attacks were supposedly “vetted” by the Afghanistan government, too.

  • US trooper killed in Afghanistan

    Chief Tango sends us a link to the Washington Post in which they report the death of a US service member during operations against ISIS in eastern Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province in the Achin district near the Pakistan border. The report is that the soldier was dismounted and killed by an IED.

    The death occurred as the U.S. military assisted Afghan forces with offensives in two other parts of the country. In the northern city of Kunduz, Afghan troops pushed out insurgents late Tuesday in an operation backed by U.S. air power. In southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, fighting was underway in both Nawa and Khanashin districts between Afghan troops and Taliban fighters.

    The death Tuesday marks the third U.S. combat fatality in Afghanistan this year.

    So, I guess the rumors that there is still a war going on in Afghanistan are true. More Americans have been killed in the US by terrorists this year than soldiers killed in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq combined.

  • Nelash Mohamed Das and support for ISIS

    AW1Ed sends us a link to the story of Nelash Mohamed Das, from Bangladesh, but living in Hyattsville, Maryland, right outside our nation’s capitol. The feds have charged him with providing material support to ISIS and planning to kill a member of the US military.

    “The danger posed by Mr. Das during this investigation was very real. He was committed to carrying out an attack against a military member,” said Special Agent in Charge Gordon B. Johnson of the FBI’s Baltimore Division. “Through our proactive investigative stance, we were able to ensure the citizens of Maryland were protected. The covert nature of the defendant’s alleged actions is a stark reminder of the challenges we face in preventing attacks, and underscores the critical need for those with knowledge about terror plots to come forward.”

    According to the affidavit filed in support of the criminal complaint, Das was admitted to the United States in 1995 and is a legal permanent resident.

    The affidavit alleges that from September 28, 2015 to early 2016, Das used social media to express his support for ISIL, including support for terrorist attacks in Paris, France, and San Bernardino, California.

    On October 26, 2015, Das tweeted the name of an individual and the city where they lived, stating that the individual “aspires to kill Muslims.” Das knew that the individual hoped to become a member of the U.S. military. ISIL members and supporters have posted identifying information about United States military personnel in hopes that those inspired by ISIL would carry out attacks against them. The affidavit alleges that Das was advertising the individual’s identity and whereabouts in order to inspire violence against that individual.

    Das shared his plan with a federal informant who helped him buy inert weapons from the Feds. Then they arrested him. Luckily. This fighting terrorism with law enforcement works well. Except when it doesn’t.

  • Gee. What a Surprise.

    Ever wondered about those nearly 900,000 “refugees” that Germany admitted last year?  You know, how they’re making ends meet?

    Well, we don’t have to wonder any more, courtesy of Fox News.

    Short version:  a sh!tload of them are receiving Germany’s equivalent of “welfare”.  Here’s the money quote from the above article.

    The Federal Employment Agency said 469,403 immigrants from asylum seekers’ eight most common countries of origin received benefits in June, a 93% increase from a year earlier. The number of Syrians tripled to 292,326 while the number of Iraqis rose by almost a quarter to 68,813.

    As the title above says:  gee, what a surprise.  Even Stevie Wonder could have seen that coming.

    What’s not a surprise is that the German public is getting kinda fed up with getting stuck with the bill – along with the increased crime caused by the refugee influx.

    The Fox article above includes a link to a Wall Street Journal article giving more details.  Unfortunately, you need to sign up to get access – and I routinely pass on doing that.  So I can’t give you any of those other details.

    Now, tell me again why we have some kind of “obligation” to do the same thing here?  Especially since we know that some number of those so-called “refugees” are in reality terrorist operatives using “refugee” status as cover for infiltration?

    Oh yeah, I remember now.  It’s because DC is currently run by a gang of naive idiots without the sense to pour p!ss out of a boot.

  • Drip, drip, drip; 615 more US troops to Iraq

    Drip, drip, drip; 615 more US troops to Iraq

    last convoy out of Iraq

    Our buddy, Kristina Wong at The Hill reports that the Pentagon is sending another 615 US troops to Iraq to augment the 4700 troops already there.

    “At the request of myself and [Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford], and with the support and approval of [Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi], President Obama has authorized approximately 600 additional U.S. troops to further enable Iraqi forces,” [Defense Secretary Ash Carter said in a statement].

    The current number of U.S. troops officially authorized for Iraq is 4,647. The additional forces would bring that number to 5,262. There are at least hundreds more who are deployed temporarily that aren’t part of that official count.

    In April, the Pentagon sent two packages of 200 and 250 more troops to Iraq. In July, they sent 560 troops. In June 2014, he said wasn’t sending US combat troops to Iraq. Also in June 2014, then-Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, currently spokesman for the State department said “This is not a combat mission, they are not being sent to participate in combat,” of the first 300 to deploy during that iteration. Just in the last few months, another 1600 were added. Just for Mosul.

    It would help if there was a strategy beyond looking like we’re not at war.
