Mary Jo Kopechne and Sen. Ted Kennedy (AP)

Senator Ted Kennedy’s political career was tarnished on July 18, 1969, when his car crashed off a bridge on the tiny Massachusetts island of Chappaquiddick, plunging into the dark waters of the tide-swept Poucha Pond, killing 28-year-old passenger Mary Jo Kopechne — a mystery that continues to haunt “America’s Royal Family.”

The shocking events leading up to the political aide’s demise is the subject of Fox Nation’s new documentary titled “Scandalous: Chappaquiddick,” which aims to investigate how the youngest Kennedy narrowly escaped from drowning and returned back to his hotel room unharmed while his passenger mysteriously drowned.

The Fox Nation special features never-before-seen interviews and retellings of the events that night, cracking down on the truth, pieces of evidence and errors that were apparent.

That fateful night, Kennedy offered the aide a ride from a party at Chappaquiddick and less than 10 hours later her dead body was being pulled from the vehicle. However, the circumstances surrounding Kopechne’s drowning remain muddled nearly 10 years after the senator’s death in 2009 at age 77.

At the time members of the media swarmed Chappaquiddick, right off the east coast of Martha’s Vineyard, and unraveled Kennedy’s multiple mistakes during the evening — derailing Kennedy’s presidential ambitions for certain.

Kopechne reportedly remained underwater for some nine hours until she was discovered the following morning.

At the time of the accident, Kennedy told police he was “unfamiliar with the road,” and that he came up to a narrow bridge at which point the car “went off the side of the bridge.” According to a description from a 1969 New York Times article, the road approaching the bridge is “narrow” with “no warning side on the approach.”

Kennedy also claimed he had “no recollection” of how he got out of the car but added he “came to the surface and repeatedly dove down to the car in an attempt to see if the passenger was still in the car,” noting he was “unsuccessful in the attempt.”

The accident was not reported by Kennedy, but rather by a mother of a little boy who saw the overturned car in the pond when he was fishing. Kennedy later described his failure to report the incident to police as “indefensible.”

Kennedy would go on to become one of the longest-serving U.S. senators, despite previously speaking of a “Kennedy curse” following the incident, questioning whether “some awful curse did actually hang over all the Kennedys.”

“Teddy Kennedy was the weak kitten in the litter, never able to measure up to his brothers. … One problem Teddy has always had was keeping it in his pants — even when other people are around”.
    Cleo O’Donnell

  • Justice Ginsburg Retirement Chatter

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg places some items in her bag before speaking at Georgetown Law School, Friday, April 6, 2018, in Washington. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s retirement, truth or rumor? You guys saw this played out over the course of the year. There was speculation during the summer as to whether Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was going to retire or not. Many, including the associate justice, dismissed the idea of her doing it soon.

Around the same time, President Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court. For those on the left, the urgency went up.

President Trump already nominated Neil Gorsuch. He subsequently was confirmed. The Democrats were still sore over this process. “They were robbed” by a Republican-led Senate that didn’t entertain then President Obama’s last nomination for the vacancy.

Despite Democrat insistence that someone get nominated soon, expeditiously, the Republicans held on in a bid to ensure that the Supreme Court continued to lean conservative. They had precedence, a Democrat led Senate did the same thing during a presidential election year.

In the end, the Democrats settled for a “one on one” replacement. A conservative associate Justice for a conservative associate justice. Then, a retirement was announced. The swing vote was going to be replaced by someone nominated by President Trump.

This gave those in the left incentive to tarnish a man’s reputation, and to derail the process in order to delay… When they hoped to have control of the Senate. A Democrat Senate would act as a speed bump to President Trump’s nominations that the left doesn’t like.

They wanted a swing vote at worst, a liberal vote at best. You saw the resulting circus and drama in the Senate, the media, and in the court of public opinion. In the end, Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed, strengthening the high court’s conservative leaning.

Now, what many Democrats hope isn’t the case is becoming a likely scenario. From the Santa Monica Observer:

She has told key Democratic members of the Senate about her medical condition, including ranking Democratic member of the Judiciary Committee Dianne Feinstein. This explains in part the “take no prisoners” attitude of the Democrats during the Kavanaugh nomination, carefully orchestrating weak 37 year old allegations against Kavanaugh by Women he barely remembers knowing in High School and College.

The Washington Post provides her desired target for retirement:

Five years from now puts us in late July 2023. That could still be during Trump’s presidency, if he’s reelected in 2020. But Ginsburg doesn’t say only five years; she says “about at least five more years.” That sounds as if she’s shooting for 2024.

The Santa Monica Observer puts that retirement date, based on conversation with law clerks, on January 2019. I haven’t found additional information corroborating the January 2019 retirement date.

However, watching Justice Ginsburg’s current state reminds me of the late John Paul II, and the state he was in before he passed away. Given her health, here’s to wishing her well.

  • Fabian Rebolledo – Phony Combat Wounded

Fabian Rebolledo – Phony Combat Wounded

The folks at Military Phony sent us this case on Fabian Rebolledo, who we mentioned here last month as part of another article.

Several men from Rebolledo’s unit in Kosovo were appalled by stories circulating in the media about Rebolledo being shot by a sniper while over there.

Here are a few excerpts if you would rather have the Cliff Notes version…

Rebolledo also likes to wear his uniform to events protesting his deportation.

His military records do not support his rank, deployments or medals in a proper fashion.

The problem with the story is Rebolledo does not have a Purple Heart and he was a PFC vs. SPC.

The problem with the uniform is the medals keep jumping around from picture to picture.

Also, cannoneers rarely, if ever, get pulled to clear landmines.

But, apparently, the story of a military hero tugged at enough heartstrings that he was brought back to the U.S.  Perhaps he should have been brought back anyway, but was there a need to embellish?

According to Rebolledo’s quote in Playboy magazine, the US Army taught him how easy it was to kill people and then discarded him later.  Hmmm, I’m sure it had nothing to do with a failed urinalysis, several DWIs, writing bad checks and driving with a revoked license.

  • By The Pricking of My Thumbs….

November 22, 1963  was a cold, rainy Friday. Nobody wanted to be outside in that slop. There was a blizzard underway on the East Coast.

My father was the head of the Speech and Theater Department at the university where I was a freshman. His students were underway in the production of that infamous accursed play by William Shakespeare, about the Scottish king who is killed off by a usurper whose wife goes nuts and kills herself.

He had hired a professional stage actor, Ramon Bieri from New York, to play the part of the usurper. He did this so that his students could have the experience of working with a pro real time and learning something from it. Now, we’d call it mentoring.

There’s a long-held traditional of a curse attached to this play. You can use the name of the main character on stage during production, but do it in an offhand way or outside the place of production, and something will happen to stop your production, maybe your opening night, among other things. Opening night was Friday, 11/22/63. My father was not superstitious and ignored the tradition of the curse, not believing that anything would happen.

    And happen it did.

Ironically, Nov. 22, 1963, Pres. and Mrs. Kennedy were in Dallas, Texas. They were supposed to return to Washington, DC, for Thanksgiving, which was on Nov. 28, 1963. For some reason, Kennedy decided to not have the bulletproof shielding attached to the Lincoln convertible he and Gov. Connolly were riding in. If you are old enough to remember what happened, then you know what happened and how much it was like being smacked by a 2×4.

I was in history class, a little after 1PM. Dr. Wilson was expounding on something, pointing at each of us and asking questions. The door was closed, we were all nearly dozing off, when someone came running down the hallway, opened the door, and said “The President has been shot!”

Huh? What? Confusion?? Yes, in spades.

Dr. Wilson was probably the only person in that room who had the presence of mind to ask immediately “If the President dies in office, who is next in line for the Presidency?”

Inappropriate? No. It was meant to shake your out of your stupefaction.

Someone finally said, “The Vice President.”

    And then class was dismissed.

As things came to light, I was convinced for the longest time that LBJ had something to do with it, because he was such a gladhanding sack of crap, but sometimes assassins simply work alone.

Everything shut down. We all watched the funeral procession to Arlington Cemetery, with a black horse named Blackjack led by one of the Guard, with boots reversed in the stirrups. That symbolized a fallen leader.

The play? Opening night was postponed until the Friday after Thanksgiving Day.

The irony is that Duncan, the rightful King, was much more popular than his rival, who killed him and took his place.

The video clip is from Patrick Stewart’s TV production of that Scottish play. I believe the full length video is available.

  • Judge Prevents Trump Administration from Refusing Asylum Between Ports of Entry

    illegal caravan

Left leaning groups took action when President Trump provided an order to refuse asylum to those who don’t go through an authorized port of entry. A judge, chosen by President Obama, issued an order preventing President Trump’s administration from enforcing President Trump’s order. This appears temporary.

    From Fox News:

U.S. District Judge Jon S. Tigar, who was nominated by President Obama in 2012 to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, issued a temporary restraining order after hearing arguments in San Francisco. .

According to the article, about 100 asylum claims are being addressed, daily, at the crossing from Tijuana to San Diego. Additionally, there’s a notebook floating around among the migrants that have over 3,000 names. This is before the caravan arrives. Once they get there, we’re looking at over 10,000 people in that area waiting to come in.

The Mexican government offered asylum to these migrants as they were headed north. Many turned these offers down.

    From Fox News:

During a conference call with reporters Monday afternoon, homeland security officials said “most of the caravan members are not women and children” and that more than 500 criminals are traveling with the group that has amassed on the other side of a San Diego border crossing.

Yet, there are people out there that believe that our borders should be easily crossed… That it doesn’t matter if those crossing are doing so illegally.

Meanwhile, the troops sent to the border are close to accomplishing the mission they were sent to the border to do. They should soon start pulling back and returning to where they’re normally assigned.

  • Republicans Win Florida Senator and Governor Recounts

The recounts in Florida, for governor and senator, resulted in Republican wins. This solidifies the Republican lead in the Senate. This also marks a first for Florida, as this would be the first time, since the 19th century, that Republicans held both Senate seats.

    From Reuters’ Bernie Woodal:

Republicans will hold both Senate seats from Florida, the third most-populous U.S. state and a regular battleground in presidential races, for the first time since 1875, during the post-Civil War period.

In his concession speech, Senator Bill Nelson took an indirect swipe at President Donald Trump. Senator Nelson made it sound like he wanted us to heal and come together. If he wanted to do away with destructive “win at all costs” politics, he would’ve strongly reviewed his concession speech before giving it.

Taking a swipe at someone, doing what his supporters want him to do, essentially takes a swipe at those supporters. Response? They would “fight back” instead. There goes what he wished for.

But, he didn’t truly want people to “come together”. His statement was more of a “firing while retreating” speech… Giving himself the appearance of “being a martyr”.

Since the recount was involved, the author referenced the 2000 Presidential Election.

Towards the end, Bernie Woodal gives the “obligatory” commentary regarding how the U.S. Supreme Court “gave” the presidency to George Bush.

I read the law that was center of that fiasco, before it became a fiasco. It was clear, and allowed the Secretary of State to make the decision that she made. the law didn’t cover incompetency, with regards to managing election ballots.

They like to mention the U.S. Supreme Court’s action, but are not as enthusiastic about mentioning how the Florida court system appeared to be assisting Al Gore’s efforts to keep the recounts going. They clearly were exercising judicial activism. the US Supreme Court put an end to that.

  • Federal Judge Orders Acosta’s Badge Restored

A federal judge sided with CNN and with Jim Acosta with regards to restoring Acosta to White House press briefings. The argument is still ongoing in court though. Jim Acosta is having his access temporarily restored while this case is being argued.

    From USA today:

U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Kelly, a Trump appointee, said the White House had violated Acosta’s Fifth Amendment right to due process by suspending his press badge without explanation or a chance for CNN to appeal the decision.

Kelly said White House officials couldn’t say who made the decision or how. The judge ordered the government to restore the credential while the rest of the case — which drew a slew of support from other media outlets, including USA TODAY — is argued.

Jim Acosta, as you know, appears hostile to President Trump, and to his policies. He advances a narrative about how his job is to cover the President. There’s a professional way to do that. Jim Acosta does it like a liberal activist.

Of course, there are those, among the media, trying to spin the White House’s actions as “arbitrary”. For example, just booting people who express a view that the administration doesn’t like, or booting people that the administration identifies as coming from fake news.

Never mind that Jim Acosta, after already getting more questioning time, refused to yield to other reporters and their questions. He was given sufficient time to allow the other reporters a chance to ask their questions. Then, when a young woman, an intern, reached for the microphone, he resisted her efforts.

Many in the mainstream media are happy about this ruling. The European Union internet version of this story shows a tidbit about how a lawyer… Who helped the Republicans during the 2000 recount fiasco… Is helping CNN in this case.

Dems are now complaining about how the demands to stop the recount in Florida would disenfranchise the thousands of absentee military votes. Wasn’t it the Democrat party that scrutinized these same votes when these votes helped the Republican? They probably don’t care about those military votes, just those votes that would give them the results that they want.

Of course Bernie won’t but someone in the Democratic Party should.

She, and Bernie, represent the where the Democratic Party is rapidly heading. Given that a healthy percentage of millennials have no issues with socialism, we could expect more like them being elected.
