    Thursday morning feel good stories

    Chief Tango sends us some more feel good stories this morning, the first is from West Virginia;

    Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputies say the homeowner heard a noise in his garage and went to investigate. That’s when he confronted a man burglarizing his home. The pair got into a fight and that’s when deputies say the homeowner shot him twice, killing him.

    “I think he done the right thing,” Morris said. “If you can’t protect what you got what the use of working and having it if someone is going to come in and take it?”

    Deputies say they found some of the stolen items on a nearby path.

    This burglary isn’t the first one to be reported in this area. Deputies say over the past couple of days there have been several. They’re not sure if the intruder killed during Wednesday’s burglary attempt is connected to them all.

    The next story is from Alaska;

    When police arrived on scene, they talked to a man who told police that two males had “knocked on his apartment door, forced their way into his home, and a physical altercation between him and the suspects ensued,” according to a statement from APD spokeswoman Jennifer Castro.

    The man told police that during the fight he was able to locate his handgun and fire a warning shot, Castro said. The suspects then fled the apartment through a window. Witnesses also reported that they saw two men running from the apartment complex.

    The next story comes from Tennessee;

    Around 9 a.m., McCormick was watching TV while two of his children were playing outside and his wife was asleep on the couch.

    “I was sitting in my recliner in my living room and a guy walked through my door with a gun and said he wanted all my money,” McCormick said.

    Police believe the home invader was a 26-year-old man with multiple pending charges of aggravated burglary and felony theft.

    “He said, ‘I’ve been itching to bust somebody,’” McCormick said.

    McCormick said the gunman demanded money and other belongings. McCormick complied, but the man demanded more.

    While the intruder was dealing with his wife, McCormick went to a bedroom, grabbed a .45 caliber pistol and came out.

    McCormick said when the intruder raised his handgun in his direction, he opened fire.

    The intruder was hit several times and fled to the front yard, where he collapsed.

    The man died shortly after arriving at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His alleged getaway car hidden in the woods near the home was towed away.

    Wednesday morning feel good stories

    Chief Tango sends us our feel good story this morning involving an of duty Houston cop conducting business for his other job;

    Harris County officials say an off-duty Pct. 7 constable deputy’s family owns the eatery and he was there to make a bank run when he was confronted by several would-be robbers. Officials say one of the suspects allegedly hit the deputy several times with a crescent wrench, and that’s when the officer opened fire. A suspect was shot several times.

    The officer was transported to Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital for treatment. He’s been with the department since 2009 and works in the warrant division.

    The suspects fled, but a short time later, the injured one arrived at Methodist Hospital in the Willowbrook area.

    And another one from Texas;

    The homeowner told police that a burglar entered his home on the 2200 block of 71st Street and appeared to be stealing beer out of the fridge, so the homeowner grabbed his pistol and yelled “don’t move,” according to police officials.

    The homeowner told police he saw the intruder grab for something, so he fired a shot. The intruder dropped an orange plastic bucket he brought to the house and fled.

    Officers found no sign that the suspect had been hit and believe the shot missed the intruder.

    And yet another one from Ohio;

    The masked man came into the building holding a large knife and pointed it at the clerk, who backed up into a counter where the gun was located, according to police reports. The 44-year-old store clerk told police she grabbed the gun and pointed it at the man and he leaned toward her again with the knife before running out of the store.

    The clerk said she fired the gun at the man, fearing he would come back for her, according to the report.

    Lancaster police searched the area and found a man in an alley within 150 yards of the store. Upon further investigation, police discovered the man had two outstanding bench warrants and arrested him.

    Tuesday morning feel good story

    This morning’s feel good story comes from Colorado;

    “She said she just heard some crashing, and got up and saw that this guy was climbing through her window,” said homeowner Linda Orist of her tenant.

    Orist said her tenant was upset and shaken up but was relived she was OK.

    “She was upset that she had to kill someone to protect herself,” said Orist.

    Orist said the man initially tried to get in through the back door. When he was unsuccessful, Orist said he broke a window with a brick and tried to climb in.

    “She warned him that she had a gun and to go away but he, I don’t know, for whatever reason, he kept coming, and she shot a warning shot into the wall and he kept coming so she had to shoot him twice,” said Orist.

    Another story comes from Chief Tango and happened in Missouri;

    According to investigators, the two suspects walked into [Elicia’s Pizza] on Gravois, pulled out their guns, and announced they were robbing the pizza parlor. The first suspect walked behind the counter and began taking money from the register while the second suspect kept his gun pointed at the owner.

    The owner, who has a conceal-carry license, pulled out his gun and began shooting at the suspects. As they fled the restaurant, the first suspect collapsed outside after being shot in his leg and buttocks. The second suspect ran east and got away in a maroon minivan. It is believed he was also shot, but there is no evidence to confirm that assumption.

    This time, the medal involved is a Purple Heart awarded posthumously to a US soldier killed in Vietnam in 1966 during an ambush.  The linked story gives the details.

    The lady was just a toddler at the time of her father’s demise.  Her mom initially received her father’s Purple Heart – but gave it to her when she turned 18.

    Years later it disappeared.  Soon she’ll have it back – courtesy of Purple Hearts Reunited.

    Well done, Zachariah Fike and Purple Hearts Reunited.  Damn well done.

    If you have some spare dollars – IMO you could do far worse than to send a few of them Purple Hearts Reunited’s way.

    Once again, Chief Tango sends us our feel good story this morning, this time it’s from Florida;

    Inside the apartment with Dubose were his wife, a 6-week-old child and an adult friend.

    “He’s given us an indication that he may have known the individual,” Sgt. Dan Jansen with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said at the scene. “Then again, he’s on his way downtown where detectives can do an extensive interview with him.”

    Neither the owner nor his father, who lives in the home, were injured.

    Police said as of now no charges have been filed against the homeowner and the case will be referred to a grand jury.

    This is the second shooting this week in which a homeowner shot a burglar attempting to enter his home.

  • Saturday morning feel good story

    Saturday morning feel good story

    Chief Tango sends us our feel good stories today, the first is from Florida;

    “It appears there was some type of break-in attempt at the West 23rd address and then they transported themselves to UF Health. All suspects are in custody at this time,” Waldrup said.

    JSO said a total of four people were in the car and suspected of being involved in the attempted robbery. Only one of the suspects was shot.

    Police said the homeowner shot at the suspects with a rifle, hitting one of the suspects several times.

    The second story comes from Louisiana;

    Around 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, the usual crowd of dog owners was gathered in the park, talking as their dogs played, said several witnesses. A man — later identified as 36-year-old Austin L. Diven, a homeless man who sometimes gives an address at local shelters — entered the park and began yelling at people there, berating them and challenging some of the senior citizens there to a fight, said John Fagan, one witness to the incident. Diven was beating on his chest, yelling, and attacking light posts and trash cans, Fagan said.

    “He was claiming that it was his square, and they needed to get off of it,” Fagan said.

    Diven then left the park and headed to a home across the street, Fagan and others said. He scaled the iron fence, began beating on the door and broke at least one window in an apparent attempt to gain entry, the witnesses said.

    A woman came out onto an upper-floor balcony of the house and demanded that Diven leave, the witnesses said. His attempts on the door and windows continued, they said, and the woman produced a shotgun and fired a shot into a nearby tree, they said. Diven finally turned to leave, returning over the fence and back into the park, where he was met by police, witnesses said.

    Surrounded, Diven plunged into the fountain, then surrendered to the officers.

    Friday morning feel good stories

    Amy sends us our first feel good story today, it’s from Texas;

    The man first called 911 to say that someone was trying to break into his home, then called again minutes later and reported that the would-be burglars were smashing the window next to his door with rocks.

    He told a dispatcher that he had a shotgun.

    “You break into someone’s house, I believe you deserve to get shot,” said neighbor Derenda Carr. “Cops don’t get there in time; there’s no way they would’ve got there in time.”

    A neighbor across the street said he heard two shots and looked out his bedroom window to see more gunfire.

    “I saw a girl run out of the house and a guy chasing after her walking speed,” said witness Brian Valera. “He was very, very angry. He yelled very threateningly at them.”

    One of the women collapsed in the street as the other one lay wounded in man’s doorway.

    The car the women traveled to the neighborhood in had been reported stolen earlier in the day, according to deputies.

    […]

    Neighbors say the women, identified by law enforcement as young adults, knocked on several doors before picking their target.

    Chief Tango sends the second story from Mississippi;

    The man said he was lying in bed about 9:40 a.m. Wednesday at his home in the 3100 block of Wisconsin Avenue, when he heard someone knocking at his door and demanding to be let in, according to a news release from the Vicksburg Police Department. When he didn’t answer, a woman, identified by police as 42-year-old Betty Robertson, forced the door open and went into the man’s bedroom.

    The homeowner told police that while still lying in bed, he fired two shots toward the bedroom door. One of the bullets struck Robertson, authorities said. Robertson and a second intruder fled the scene, police said.

    About 10 minutes later Carl Marshall, 55, called 911 to report that his girlfriend had been shot, police said. When officers arrived at a home in the 3100 block of Indiana Avenue, they found Robertson suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg, authorities said.
