  • Re-Bateman on guns

    Earlier this month, we responded to LTC Robert Bateman when he wrote in Esquire magazine about taking guns from law-abiding citizens to stop Alabama fans from killing each other. In case you forgot, here was his solution;

    The only guns permitted will be the following:

    a. Smoothbore or Rifled muzzle-loading blackpowder muskets. No 7-11 in history has ever been held up with one of these.

    b. Double-barrel breech-loading shotguns. Hunting with these is valid.

    c. Bolt-action rifles with a magazine capacity no greater than five rounds. Like I said, hunting is valid. But if you cannot bring down a defenseless deer in under five rounds, then you have no fking reason to be holding a killing tool in the first place.

    We will pry your gun from your cold, dead, fingers. That is because I am willing to wait until you die, hopefully of natural causes. Guns, except for the three approved categories, cannot be inherited. When you die your weapons must be turned into the local police department, which will then destroy them. (Weapons of historical significance will be de-milled, but may be preserved.)

    Well, apparently, Lieutenant Colonel Bateman got some email that didn’t make him happy, according to his latest piece at Esquire (yes, they didn’t learn their lesson the first time);

    OK, so let us start with the facts. A total of 2,324 emails came in following my post about guns, so far. I responded to every single one of them. This was in the wake of my essay about developing some sort of rational, peaceful, non-confiscatory way of removing guns from the hands of criminals and reducing the drain on our national resources. And, as one concerned about national defense, that is how I think about the issue. I cannot avoid contemplating the drain on our national resources of the 100,000+ Americans who are shot every year as anything but a national defense issue. We are a weakened nation because of this, and I want us to be stronger.

    Unfortunately, a lot of people just want to shoot guns.

    Yeah his essay was totally rational – restricting private owners to 19th century weapons and assuming that we only use guns for hunting. And, oh, yeah, we’ll dismantle your collection for your inability to continue breathing. That’s his idea of being rational. Of course, this infantry officer who hasn’t served in an infantry unit for the last couple of decades, blames the NRA for the threats against him (most of them aren’t really threats, anyway; the emailers claim that “if” Bateman tries to take their guns, they’ll defend themselves – not a threat unless he comes for their guns, actually).

    But you know, what does he expect, really? He makes myopic and stereotypical accusations about gun owners, and we’re supposed to sit here and take it, because, you know he’s our social and moral superior who is concerned about an Alabama fan, and we’re not willing to take draconian measures as a result to avenge the death by one nutcase who will probably be punished by society for the murder.

    Apparently, the non-infantry officer wearing crossed rifles hasn’t learned his lesson about controversy. And how very Leftist Liberal of him to blame the NRA for his hate mail, instead of his own stupid yammering.

  • More on the Former 20th AF Commander

    New information has been publicly released concerning the incident leading to the relief of Maj. Gen. Michael Carey, former Commander of the 20th Air Force.  It turns out the rumor he was relieved due to misconduct on a “business trip” involving alcohol were 100% true.

    Seems he was rather drunk and disorderly in public.  But the circumstances are, shall we say, a bit different than one might expect.  And that’s only part of the story.

    The misconduct occurred while Carey was traveling on official business in Russia.  And it also looks like he came pretty close to causing a diplomatic incident, and may have engaged in practices dangerous to security.

    While attending a nuclear security training exercise in Russia as head of a U.S. government delegation, Maj. Gen. Carey apparently was rather drunk and loud in the lobby of a hotel.  And he also reputedly offered a toast at an official function that included remarks about the traitor Snowden – after Snowden had arrived in Russia, but before he had been offered asylum.  The toast was reportedly “not well received” by his Russian hosts.  Imagine that.

    Indeed, Carey was reportedly “frequently rude to both his fellow delegates and to his Russian hosts” during the trip.  He also reportedly spent some time during the trip socializing  “with Russian or non-American women” who he later acknowledged were “suspect”.

    When questioned about the trip afterwards by IG investigators, Carey also apparently had very poor memory. It appears he was rude to the IG investigators, too.

    Drunk, disorderly, rude to host nation officials, and chasing tail publicly while overseas.  Yeah, that’s exactly what one expects from a Major General TDY to a foreign nation conducting official business of a sensitive nature.

    IMO, looks like the USAF made the right call to relieve the guy.

  • Duckin’ around

    So, GLAAD, whatever that is, has their panties in a twist because Phil Robertson, of Duck Dynasty fame, quoted from the Bible to explain what he thought of the gay lifestyle. I won’t link to it, because I’m sure you’ve read it. People are more engaged about that than they are about veterans getting their COLA cut to balance the budget so we don’t have to cut benefits to illegal aliens. But, I digress.

    I don’t watch Duck Dynasty just like I don’t watch any of these “reality shows”, but I do know something about it. Folks tried to get me to pull up Sy’s military records so they can talk ill of his career, I suppose. I didn’t do it, because he served during Vietnam when most people wouldn’t and that’s good enough for me. As far as I know, he never claimed any medals or honors, so I left well enough alone.

    I saw some BS article a few weeks ago about how the Robertson family used to be clean cut and buttoned down until the opportunity for this show arose. So? All it proves is that the media is jealous of success and they’re always trolling around for information to tear successful people down. Somehow it makes them feel better about their own miserable existence, I suppose.

    Well, now they’ve succeeded somewhat with Phil. But, in my opinion, this whole discussion says more about GLAAD than anyone else. Yes, there are people who still think that homosexuality is a sin and a deviancy. GLAAD has a problem with that and they want to be the thought police. No one is supposed to vocalize their distaste for the gay lifestyle.

    My problem is not with the gay lifestyle, it’s with people like GLAAD who want to shove their lifestyle down our throats, so to speak. The more you push me into doing what you want, the more I’ll resist. GLAAD isn’t making any allies with this militant approach to squelching the dissent. In fact, their militancy will probably give rise to a counter-militancy. A&E didn’t do themselves or GLAAD any favors by laying off Phil for a spell either.

    I’m no bible-thumper, but I’ll defend Phil’s right to be one, especially when he has the courage to do so in public. Just like I defend gays’ rights to say what they want to say in public.

    But anyway, here’s an interview with Terry Bradshaw who talks with Jay Leno about Phil’s younger days;

    In conclusion, if the media doesn’t want to know the answers to their questions, they shouldn’t ask. If Phil doesn’t like the way he’s being treated, he should decline to answer questions like that one. And GLAAD should just take a massive dose of Midol and shut up.

  • I want Obamacare because I want to be like this guy

    pajamaboy

    Seriously, do they honestly think that this little dork would tempt me into the Obamacare mess? If I were to caption the photo, I’d put “I’m not crazy, my mother had me tested.”

  • Sergeant Major Guilty of Identity Theft

    A Fort Bragg sergeant major, William Anthony Morrone Jr. was convicted of fraudulent enlistment and making false statements in regards to his theft of his brother’s identity in order to enlist, according to the Fayetteville Observer. Morrone had a discharge when he was younger that hindered his re-entry to the Army, so he used his brother’s name and college degree in the late 80s to reenlist and rose rather quickly through the ranks to Sergeant Major and did a couple of deployments to Iraq during the Gulf War and the War Against Terror;

    William Morrone said that in 1988, he lived with his older brother Gerald and came across Gerald’s birth certificate and other personal papers. That spring, he took these to sign up for the Army again. For the second time, William Morrone went to jump school to become an Army paratrooper.

    His brother’s college degree gave him a head start at his revived military career, with his rank private first class instead of private, a prosecutor said.

    Morrone was stationed at Fort Bragg and spent much of the next 25 years here.

    His lawyer claimed that Marrone tried to get the Army to correct his records, but that the request fell through the cracks of the bureaucracy. Like most of us are, Marrone was brought low by his ex-wife;

    But Gerald’s wife, Jamie, was troubled by the identity theft. She said her name was on an IRS letter several years ago regarding William’s military income. She said she contacted law enforcement to report the identity theft.

    She wanted to see William punished.

    Yeah, our best tipsters about frauds here at TAH are from ex-wives and -girlfriends. My goal in life is to have neither. As near as I can tell, Marrone’s sole punishment was a reduction to sergeant first class, two ranks.

  • Affluenza Defense

    Now, I’m no lawyer, but this “affluenza defense” thing seems to me to be about the most un-American thing, next to making people buy stuff they don’t want. But, this refers to the case of Ethan Couch who admitted in court that, while he was intoxicated, he killed four people with his vehicle. Four lives snuffed out. The judge sentenced this murderer to ten years of probation because the judge agreed with his lawyer that Couch was a rich spoiled brat who had never suffered the consequences of his actions and so he’s not completely responsible for his actions. This from CNN;

    Simply put, Couch, 16, claims that his condition stemmed from having wealthy, privileged parents who never set limits for him.

    Judge Jean Boyd sentenced him Tuesday to 10 years of probation but no jail time, saying she would work to find him a long-term treatment facility.

    But Eric Boyles, who lost his wife and daughter in the crash, said on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360,” “There are absolutely no consequences for what occurred that day. The primary message has to absolutely be that money and privilege can’t buy justice in this country.”

    […]

    The day of the crash, Boyles’ wife, Hollie, and daughter Shelby had left their home to help Breanna Mitchell, whose SUV had a flat tire. Youth pastor Brian Jennings also stopped to help.

    All four died when Couch’s pickup plowed into them. The vehicle also struck a parked car, which slid into another vehicle coming the opposite way. Two people riding in the bed of Couch’s pickup sustained severe injuries.

    Earlier that day, Couch and some friends had stolen beer from a local Walmart. Three hours after the crash, Couch’s blood alcohol level was 0.24, three times the legal limit for someone of legal drinking age, according to prosecutors.

    America is supposed to be a classless society, but apparently, the justice system doesn’t recognize that. Anderson Cooper discusses the “affluence defense” with a psychologist;

  • Panetta gave classified information to Hollywood

    Tman sends us a link to the Associated Press which reports that Leon Panetta, as the Director of the CIA gave a speech to CIA employees which included classified details of the bin Laden raid. Apparently, scriptwriter Mark Boal from the staff working on “Zero Dark Thirty” was in the room;

    Panetta said through a spokesman that he didn’t know Boal was in the room.

    Judicial Watch filed a request for the more than 200 pages of documents, which the CIA released Tuesday. The documents concerned the internal investigation of its role in the film about the bin Laden raid.

    “I had no idea that individual was in the audience,” Panetta said in a statement. “To this day, I wouldn’t know him if he walked into the room.” Panetta spokesman Jeremy Bash said Panetta assumed everyone in the audience had the proper clearance to hear the speech.

    OK, that’s good excuse. No one knew that that this script writer was in the audience? Someone who didn’t have the clearance to be in the room? The documents that Judicial Watch FOIA’d still have portions redacted, so, yeah I still have loads of confidence in this administration and their ability to keep secrets.
