  • Bob Dole to Scott McClellan

    Dear Scott,
You are a wormy piece of shit!
    Regards,
    Bob

Politico has the story and Dole makes his opinion crystal clear.

“There are miserable creatures like you in every administration who don’t have the guts to speak up or quit if there are disagreements with the boss or colleagues,” Dole wrote in a message sent yesterday morning. “No, your type soaks up the benefits of power, revels in the limelight for years, then quits, and spurred on by greed, cashes in with a scathing critique.”
    ……..
Michael Marshall, Dole’s spokesman and colleague at the Alston Bird law firm, confirms the message came from the former senator and presidential candidate. “Yes, it is authentic,” Marshall wrote in an email.

  • Pelosi Said What?

Commentary Magazine has an amazing piece up about a recent interview that Nancy Pelosi did with the San Francisco Chronicle.

Regarding her recent trip to Iraq, she was asked if she had seen any evidence that the “Surge” was working. Of course only a complete moron can’t see the significant improvements but wait until you see who Pelosi gives the credit to!

Prime Minister Maliki? Nope. General Patraeus? Nope.

    Here’s her quote:

Well, the purpose of the surge was to provide a secure space, a time for the political change to occur to accomplish the reconciliation. That didn’t happen. Whatever the military success, and progress that may have been made, the surge didn’t accomplish its goal. And some of the success of the surge is that the goodwill of the Iranians-they decided in Basra when the fighting would end, they negotiated that cessation of hostilities-the Iranians.

    The “Goodwill of the Iranians”!!!!!

I think it’s time for a swig from the little brown jug of reality for San Fran Nan.

The Iranians are killing our troops you idiotic dolt! The cease-fire in Basra supposedly negotiated by the Iranians collapsed like a card table. That was when Maliki and the IA went in and kicked their asses. No Iranian “negotiations” brought peace to Basra. It was the sustained targeting and killing of Iranian backed terrorists. Ms. Pelosi, you need to understand that a dead Tango is a significantly less threat than a live one.

The Iranians have done nothing less than propagate the violence all over the Middle East you miserable surrender monkey!

Assuming the “Surge” was in place in June of last year; 605 Americans have died to make this work. No mention of their sacrifice by Speaker Pelosi. Also missing is the fact a vast majority of these were killed by IRAN!

This is beyond pathetic Ms. Pelosi. I know you hate President Bush but you now have demonstrated how much you loathe America.

Just for the record: This is how Democrats think. Support them at your peril.

    Defend this Wheeler?

  • Best Primary Ever

RedState notices the futility of Obama and Clinton fighting it out in South Dakota and Montana.

The two Democratic candidates are currently fighting it out in Montana and South Dakota. They have to spend money there. Bush took both states in 2004 by 21 points. Neither Democrat can realistically hope to win either in November.

And they’re not even done yet.

They are both spending time and money here but in such small media markets the cost is negligible at best. The interesting point is the futility.

South Dakota has not voted for a Democrat since 1940, except for 1964. That means they voted against FDR, Truman and Kennedy. When Democrat icons can’t carry South Dakota; Barry and Hillary have zero chance.

In 2004, Bush carried South Dakota handily. In the only two counties to cast more than 10,000 votes (Minnehaha and Pennington), Bush carried them by 15 and 35 points respectively. Of the 66 counties in South Dakota, Kerry managed to carry nine. Only three of those (Roberts, Day and Clay) were majority white people. The other six (Ziebach, Todd, Shannon, Dewey, Corson and Buffalo) are made up of 80% Native Americans.

It is very likely that many of the votes in those six counties were cast by dead people (who Obama can apparently see), three year olds and porch dogs named shotgun.

As the Wall Street Journal reported in 2002, voter fraud on Indian Reservations is rampant in Tom Daschel’s native state.

More and more counties are uncovering fraud. Rapid City officials are investigating two brothers who may have forged registrations. Denise Red Horse of Ziebach County died September 3 in a car crash. But both Ziebach and Dewey counties found separate absentee-ballot applications from her dated September 21 in bundles of applications mailed from Democratic headquarters. Maka Duta, who worked for the Democratic Party collecting registrations in Ziebach, bought a county history book that contains many local names. Some are turning up in the pile of new registrations. At least nine absentee ballot requests have been returned by the post office. Mable Romero says she received a registration card for her three-year-old granddaughter, Ashley. Some voters claim to have been offered cash to register to vote. In both Dewey and Ziebach counties, the number of registered voters easily exceeds the number of residents over 18 counted by the 2000 census.

Renee Dross, an election clerk for Shannon County, says her office has received some 1,100 new voter registrations in a county with only 10,000 people. “Many were clearly signed by the same person,” she says. Some registrants actually live in neighboring Nebraska. As in most states, South Dakotans are on an “honor system” and don’t show photo ID to register or vote. Only the unprecedented flood of applications raised any suspicions.

Apparently trying to steal the election didn’t work either.

You have to admit that this is entertaining.

  • Vote for Barry or Enlist!

Little Green Footballs has this bit of lunacy from the Daily Kos.

If you’re going to help McCain get elected, you need to take responsibility for your actions. This election is bigger than you. It’s bigger than Barack Obama. It’s bigger than Hillary Clinton. Lives will be saved or lost depending on who is elected in November, and if you’re going to willfully help prolong the war, it’s time to do the honorable thing and enlist.

Click here to locate a U.S. Army recruiter in your area.

Don’t worry, you’ll still be able to get election results from Baghdad, and you’ll still be able to “sit this one out” under the comfort of a mortar attack. And yes, I’m sure hearing about an Obama defeat will seem all the more sweet when you’re laying in the choking aftermath of an IED explosion with a piece of half-melted plastic burning a hole into your intestines. I’m sure you’ll be comforted by the knowledge that history had no place for President Obama when you’re staring at the empty space where your leg used to be. And certainly, I’m sure the crippling terror of post-traumatic stress disorder will be nowhere as severe as the disingenuous “concern” you’ll suffer over debunked Rezko conspiracy theories and the excited ramblings of a liberation theologian.

I won’t go into the FACT that Barry is tied very closely both personally and financially to Rezko who is in fact about to go to jail for being a crook and a conman who stole millions from Barry’s inner city constituents.

Nor will I start with Barry’s piss poor judgment for sitting on his pathetic ass for over 20 years listening to “excited ramblings” like GOD DAMN AMERICA!

But let’s look at the whole “Vote Barry or Enlist” alarm. I guess the idea is that if you vote for anyone other than the Messiah you should enlist or forever be a hypocrite.

Well dumb ass, if you love Barry so much, you might want to help him achieve one of his objectives.

    From Barry’s website:

Expand the Military: We have learned from Iraq that our military needs more men and women in uniform to reduce the strain on our active force. Obama will increase the size of ground forces, adding 65,000 soldiers to the Army and 27,000 Marines.

So, what’s it going to be numb-nuts? Planning to follow the Messiah’s stated goal? Of course you aren’t, you POS. You don’t have the courage to help Barry and his big “Change”.

That’s okay though; see the Democrats have thought of the lack of personal courage among their many followers. So, they are going to draft your sorry ass!

    – Press Release from Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY)
    FEB – 2006
The bill would mandate military service for men and women between the ages of 18 and 42. Deferments would be allowed only for completion of high school up to the age of 20, and for reasons of health, conscience or religious belief. Recruits not needed by the military in any given year would be required to perform some national civilian service.

  • Really Bad News for the Surrender-crats!

Really Bad News for the Surrender-crats!

“We are not safer.” Barack Obama

The Strategy Page, as usual, has an excellent piece up.

Today, al Qaeda has been shattered, with most of its leadership and foot soldiers dead, captured or moved from Iraq. As a result, al Qaeda attacks have declined more than 90 percent. Worse, most of their Iraqi Sunni Arab allies have turned on them, or simply quit. This “betrayal” is handled carefully on the terrorist web sites, for it is seen as both shameful, and perhaps recoverable.
    ………..
When al Qaeda could not, in 2007, exercise any real control over the parts of Iraq they claimed as part of the new Islamic State, it was the last straw. The key supporters, battered by increasingly effective American and Iraqi attacks, dropped their support for al Qaeda, and the terrorist organization got stomped to bits by the “surge offensive” of last year. The final insult was delivered by the former Iraqi Sunni Arab allies, who quickly switched sides, and sometimes even worked with the Americans (more so than the Shia dominated Iraqi security forces) to hunt down and kill al Qaeda operators.

Bill Roggio is reporting a similar phenomenon within the Mahdi Army. And he is quoting no less than the Los Angeles Times!

A common narrative about the war in Iraq is that fighting against the enemy in urban environments creates more insurgents, thus it is fruitless to even try. But today’s Los Angeles Times finally asked Iraqis in Sadr City what they think about the recent fighting and how it impacts their views of the Mahdi Army. The answer: The Mahdi Army has lost significant support from not only residents caught in the crossfire, but from Mahdi Army fighters themselves.

In fact, some Mahdi Army fighters were so discouraged by the recent fighting that they vowed to never join the ranks again. “I had faith. I believed in something,” a former Mahdi Army fighter told the LA Times. “Now, I will never fight with them.”

The bottom line: WE ARE SAFER. Sorry about that Barry; wrong again.

The Democrat talking point that “Killing terrorists creates more terrorists” is an abject lesson in the danger of nuanced thinking.

The thinking is that killing a terrorist makes the terrorist’s brother join the fight to avenge his brother. This is the kind of thinking at the very heart of appeasement and it NEVER works.

Do you know why the terrorists are discussing “what went wrong”? Because they got their collective ass kicked, that’s why.

Obama’s nuanced academic approach is akin to the argument that the death penalty does not deter criminal behavior. Maybe it doesn’t but there is one unassailable fact about the death penalty. When used, it significantly impacts the likelihood of said individual ever becoming a repeat offender.

This is a fairly simple concept actually; when someone is trying to kill you, anything you do other than kill him first is counter-productive.

  • Promises Worth Keeping

While Jonn is doing great work covering the Rolling Thunder in DC, I figured I would pen a poignant and thought provoking post for Memorial Day.

At first I though I would dedicate the post to someone I knew personally who is among those fallen warriors that we should be thinking of on this weekend.

This was no easy task as I recalled men like Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart; then I recalled Jonn’s very close old friend Griz Martin. Maybe I would go even further back to men like Randy Cline or Mark Rademacher? Then I considered maybe someone more contemporary like Tom Echols who was my son’s best friend through high school and gave his life in Fallujah.

Tough decision indeed. So, I grabbed a beer and sat down and started a list. I was surprised at how rapidly I recalled the names and saddened as the list grew longer…and longer. Then something happened.

No, that’s just smoke in my eyes.

Please enjoy your weekend but please take a moment to reflect why we have a Memorial Day.

I watched a widow sit and weep,
But I came to kneel where warriors sleep.
I plant a flag beside the stone
And think of glory far long gone.
I will not sit where she is weeping,
For we each have promises worth keeping.

JOHN 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his
    friends.

No Greater Love – Major General (Retired) Alfred Valenzuela

In March 2003, Major General Freddie Valenzuela presided over the funeral of Specialist Rodrigo Gonzalez-Garza, the first casualty of the Iraq War. The young soldier was not yet a citizen of the United States and General Valenzuela wondered what motivated him and many others like him to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country. No Greater Love answers this question and many more concerning the dedication of our servicemen and women, specifically Hispanic soldiers in the US military.

When I think of contributions by Hispanic soldiers, I always think of SGT Pedro Rodriguez of the famed 65th Infantry Regiment. This stud won two Silver Stars in one week during the Korean War!

I have an interview scheduled with MG Valenzuela next week so check back in for a personal look into the heart of a great soldier and American.

  • Interview: The Fort Bragg Barracks Controversy

Shortly after the US invasion of Panama in 1990, several staff officers of SOUTHCOM were strongly encouraging General Max Thurmond to engage the media that were clambering for information. Finally in frustration, Thurmond said “Send out the Public Affairs guy! He doesn’t know shit and is trained to say even less.”

The Army has gotten a lot smarter with media relations and we have some extremely well trained and dedicated soldiers who fight the media fight on a daily basis. It is a very difficult and often thankless job but they are a great resource.

I’m sure you have all read and seen the video of the substandard barracks conditions that some paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne recently returned to at Fort Bragg. Naturally this situation created an uproar and just as naturally politicians started chiming in.

The video was pretty damning but I wanted to get the real story. So, I reached out to Major Angela Funaro of the 18th Airborne Corps Public Affairs Office.

In spite preparing for All American Week and a visit by the President, she was gracious enough to give me an interview.

    1. How many soldiers were living in the specific barracks in question?

    Approximately 100

    2. What unit (s) were the soldiers assigned to?

C Co., 2-508th Infantry Regt., 82nd Airborne Div.

    3. Was the chain of command or installation support folks aware of the
problem before the film hit the internet?

Yes. Work began in January of 2008, but was uncompleted. In addition, the unit returned three weeks early from their 15-month deployment from OEF in Afghanistan on 13 April 2008, and the rear detachment had only 72 hours notice of their early arrival. Outstanding work orders had not been completed and were ongoing as they arrived home, which was when the pictures were taken.

While the conditions were unacceptable under any reasonable standard, at no time was the life, health or safety of any of the Soldiers in jeopardy. Our Preventative Medicine department inspected the paint (no lead content) and found traces of mold but reported no health hazards were present. By the time Mr. Frawley posted his video on 24 April, many of the repairs had been completed. The flooded latrine that was pictured occurred after troops clogged a couple of the toilets with baby wipes, and an emergency work order was called and closed out within two hours of initial report to DPW. The bottom line is that these barracks have long outlived their usefulness and are no longer acceptable by today’s standards.

    4. How many of the old barracks are still occupied?

    a. 21 Korean War era “hammer heads”
    b. 4 late 1960’s/early 70’s “rolling pins”
    c. 3 late 50’s “H-style”
    d. 8 late 80’s “ARHOC and 2+2”
    e. 6 early 70’s “rolling pins” renovated to 1+1 standard
    f. 2 mid 50’s renovated to 1+1 standard
    g. 62 interim modulars
    h. 43 late 80’s through present 1+1 standard
    i. 19 late 70’s/early 80’s “LBC&W” style
TOTAL: 168 barracks. However, only the Korean War era barracks
    are slated for complete reconstruction

    5. Has anyone been held responsible, administratively or otherwise?

I cannot speak if administrative action was taken by the Division. As a result of the incident, the garrison command for Fort Bragg under Installation Management Command (IMCOM) is now charged with conducting regularly scheduled maintenance inspections. Unit leaders are still required to enforce good order and discipline in their assigned barracks.

    6. What has been done in the short term to get these soldiers in alternate quarters?

All but three (out of 21) repairs have been made, and the Soldiers still reside in those barracks. The Secretary of the Army, a Congressional staff delegation, and soon the President himself have toured those very rooms to find them in satisfactory condition.

Within 24 hours of Mr. Frawley’s YouTube video being posted, we invited local media to a press conference by the Garrison Commander, COL David Fox, and a tour of the barracks with their cameras. Unfortunately, some outlets have not shown the new photos and instead have reported on our corrective actions while rebroadcasting the photos from Mr. Frawley’s video which has not helped with the public’s understanding of the situation today.

    7. What is the long term schedule to have all of these old barracks
    vacated?

This particular unit is scheduled to occupy new barracks in the summer of 2009. By 2013, all Korean War-era barracks are planned for complete replacement with new barracks.

    8. Has additional resources been allocated to address the barracks issue?

Yes. After an Army-wide review subsequent the Frawley video, IMCOM allocated $3 million to Fort Bragg to be used for Sustainment, Restoration, and Modernization (SRM).

    9. Are there any further projects at Fort Bragg ongoing or planned that will enhance the soldier’s quality of life?

Absolutely. Ft. Bragg is one of five Army posts chosen to participate in a pilot project approved in 2007 called the Army’s Residential Communities Initiative. It entails privatizing housing areas for single Soldiers of certain ranks (E-6 and above). We have turned over on-post family housing to Bragg Communities, LLC, the public-private partnership between Ft. Bragg and Picerne Military Housing. While the housing exists on post, it is owned by an independent company. The cost of this housing is based on square footage, not the Soldier’s Basic Housing Allowance (BAH) rate. The rent for single Soldier housing will not exceed the BAH rate for an E6/SSG.
Each housing area is part of a residential community that includes a clubhouse, pool, fitness and business center, and pretty much everything you would find in a high-quality apartment community or home owner’s association. The new single Soldier apartment community will be completed early next year.

    10. Please feel free to add any additional information.

I just want to summarize that a great deal has been done here at Ft. Bragg to improve the living conditions of our single Soldiers. The construction efforts and funding for them is unprecedented. In the past two years we’ve completed construction on five barracks complexes on post providing them with 3,435 modern, spacious accomodations. Currently we have an additional 2,238 barracks spaces in various phases of construction.

Eighty percent of the 82nd Airborne Division has been moved out of the Korean War era barracks.
