VT officer was a veteran

I mentioned briefly yesterday the shooting at Virginia Tech in which an officer was killed during a routine traffic stop. Apparently the shooter wasn’t involved in the traffic stop but, rather ambushed 39-year-old Deriek W. Crouse of Christiansburg. From Fox News;

Crouse was an Army veteran and married father of five children and stepchildren who joined the campus police force about six months after the 2007 massacre. He previously worked at a jail and for the Montgomery County sheriff’s department.

Of course, VT officials are not blaming the shooter, but rather, the gun;

“In light of the turmoil and trauma and the tragedy suffered by this campus by guns, I can only say words don’t describe our feelings and they’re elusive at this point in time,” university president Charles Steger said. “Our hearts are broken again for the family of our police officer.”

Like someone mentioned yesterday, thst this happened is inconceivable – it ocurred in a gun-free zone. Didn’t the gunman know that?

  1. From what I read of the situation, this was an ambush. I’m not sure that anyone else having a gun would have helped, other then to shoot the killer after the fact.
    But VTs meme against guns doesn’t help.

  2. History has repeatedly and unquestionably proven that “Gun-Free Zone” is an oxymoron.

    I have never understood the mindset that refuses to acknowledge the fact that violent crime is directly proportional to the severity of gun laws. The more anti-gun, the more violence reported, and for every reported incident there are a greater number that remain unreported.

  3. When someone wants to kill you, you’re dead. It may be relatively difficult, depending on a number of factors, including whether you have others watching out for your safety, but if the would-be killer is prepared to die, you are dead. That’s the rare event. Commonly, as we saw with the 2007 VT massacre (as Jonn aptly called it), would-be victims could have survived and defeated the attacker if they were proficient in the use of firearms and were legally permitted to carry them. In the case of Officer Crouse, it now appears he was neither ambushed nor shot after making a traffic stop. The shooter, it’s now being reported, simply walked up to him and shot. The shooter was prepared to die and reportedly then killed himself.

  4. Agree with #1: VT’s functional fixation on blaming guns, not criminals, gives permission to criminals to continue murdering its students and staff.

  5. It was also reported about increase in violence on Ohio States campus and people there are clammering for the right to conceal carry on campus. The Administration has turned a deaf ear to their pleas. If I was a student on the VT campus damn the laws now I would CC. Two different shootings on campus has to be a defense of prosecution.

    Rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6

  6. It’s actually a pervasive meme, no one gets blamed for anything. Hence, the headline, Man Run Down by SUV, Woman Killed When Pickup Flips, or, in this case, Tragedy suffered by this campus by guns. It’s all part of the “no one is to blame” syndrome.

  7. There is a big push for allowing guns on campus here in GA as well. Students at Georgia Tech and Columbus State are spearheading the campaign.

  8. If a gun is responsible for shooting someone then I am going to start blaming my pencil for wrong answers on my test. I tried pulling that in a class and the teacher told me it wasn’t the same thing. A pencil wasn’t a deadly weapon and tool intelligence to use.

    At first, I thought about slamming my sharpened stick with an eraser into his ear to prove his first point wasn’t right, then decided to pull up a youtube video of a chimp that was taught to write its name with a pencil.

    I am a firm believer that strengthening gun laws will only punish those who follow the law. Those who thumb their nose at the law won’t care that it is a felony to carry a gun… it’s a felony to rob someone at gunpoint or shoot someone too.

  9. Ok, a drunk driver runs a red light and kills a couple coming home from prom. Do they blame the Chevy truck the guy stole? No, they blame the drunk driver. This officer was shot by a punk with a gun? They blame the punk? No. They blame the gun. Dumas!
