The Stars & Stripes reports that last week, Major General Charles A. Flynn assumed command of the 25th infantry Division in Hawaii from Major General Kurt Fuller. We’ve all been through these ceremonies and they’re not really all that exciting, but this one differed from most because they opened the ceremony with the traditional Hawaiian warriors dance;
The Hawaiian warriors dance that opened the ceremony was “a way to show our admiration and respect for the Hawaiian and Pacific islands culture,” Fuller said. The 25th was activated in Hawaii just months before the Pearl Harbor attack in December 1941.
The division’s deep roots here make it “forever part of Hawaii,” Fuller said.

Actually, it’s all pretty much the same and was adapted from the Polynesian people of the South Pacific area.
Yup, the native Hawaiians and Maoris (plus Somoans, Tongans, Tahitians, etc.) are all descended from common Polynesian heritage…

I was stationed in Hawaii my last 8 years in the Navy and have seen a few of these. Have to admit, they did a pretty decent job of it. Great job, guys.
Very impressive haka, for a bunch of haolis (of any color).
I’m not a big fan of trying to imitate cultural dances. It basically tends to piss off more than a few of the tradional native people.
The Spice Girls, back in the day did a show in New Zealand where they thought they would do their version of the Haka. It really pissed off the Maori population. The Haka is never done by female and is supposed to be led by the eldet Maori Male present.
You start doing one dance then you leave out Native Americans. Africans, Scots, Welsh, Irish and other cultural War dances.
I guess the 7th Cav Should be doing the riverdance to “Garry Owen”.

It’s not a traditional Hawaiian war dance at all. Not sure if it’s the Maori or Samoan dance, think it’s the Maori.
