This week’s open thread is hosted by this sheep in a news photo. And here’s the Photo of the Day from Yahoo News meant to tug at your heart strings because most of the “refugees” are not children or women – they’re military-age men;

A girl cries at the "Horgos 2" border crossing into Hungary, near Horgos, Serbia, Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015. Thousands of migrants poured into Croatia on Thursday, setting up a new path toward Western Europe after Hungary used tear gas and water cannons to keep them out of its territory. I guess Mr. Bernath is pretty excited about the Weekend Open Thread, too, judging by his visits to the blog in the last few days;

Bernath visits

Well, I’m going to watch my wife do some landscaping while I supervise from the shade of my Bernath-bought front porch with a Belgian White and a Dominican cigar.

Who was the Marine officer who wrote that hysterically funny book about his time in eastern Europe? I didn’t write down the title, and I want to grab it this time. Anyone?

Oh! Both the Old Farmer’s Almanac and the Farmer’s Almanac are out now. Ordered mine yesterday.

Holy crap. I made the mistake of “stumbling” into that LSD flashback website of Lawn Dart Danny’s. It takes quite a man to pack that much CRAZY into one page. He seems really obsessed with homosexuality and anal sex. Well they do say that you tend to talk about the things you like best. Hey Bernasty, 凸(-_-)凸 and yo mama too.

Anybody see the story on the Royal Navy surveying the wrecks of Jutland?

    1. Ex-PH2

Here’s a link to the Royal Navy’s press release on that. Two days of naval warfare resulted in nearly 10,000 dead on both sides. The HMS Invincible was destroyed when a German bomb penetrated her Q turret and the resulting fire detonated the ship’s magazines.

One of the more fascinating German WWI officers, Felix von Luckner, was in that battle- he later became famous for taking a clipper ship into the Atlantic as a raider – and in the age of ironclads, sank over 20 ships. He was notable for capturing crews uninjured and setting them free near neutral ports later when he could – after the war he was declared ‘above the law’, one of only two in the whole country. In WWII he negotiated a truce that kept the city of Halle from being destroyed by a pitched battle between US and SS troops. His autobiography “Count von Luckner: The Sea Devil” is tremendous reading.

what we see her is called A Stall/Spin. His airspeed was so low that the starboard wing stalled. Had he been a little higher that would have developed into a full spin. You never want to go low and slow at the same time.

Memo to non-CPO disbarred lawyers with shitty flying ability: do you read lips? FUCK YOU. There, feel better? Keep harassing people, their employers, et al. You’ll find that no matter how well you think your assets are hidden, how much you think you can get away with saying about people that isn’t true, nothing is better at protecting your assets than knowing when to STFU, which you obviously have yet to learn.

Oh, and any correspondence you get from the FL Bar telling you to knock off claiming you’re a lawyer, let you get hauled in and charged with a 3rd degree felony? You’re welcome, fucker.

    1. Keep it to the forums. Remember, nothing too inflammatory here, only the forums. Take your pick of threads, it’s under the Bernath sub-forum. Scroll down past the SV Homework forum and Wittgenfeld. I thought it would be more appropriate at the bottom, but it’s number 3 from the top.

Haven’t been doing any commenting for the past week. Thought I’d let the Earth do a few spins without me opening my yap. My thanks go out to GDContractor for wondering where I and Scooby were.

The newest spawn of Claw Grandbaby I spoke of two weeks ago arrived at 1059 hrs (CDT) on 10 September.

Another bull calf, weight eight and a half pounds, 22 inches, all fingers, toes, ears and nose accounted for. Mother and child are doing well.

    That is all.

Congrats, Grandpaw. Good to hear all are doing well.

Yes no drums or other noisy instruments, but maybe you can abuse your children by giving your grandchild this….

        1. Roger in Republic

It’s OK EX. Everybody knows WHY!

  17. News reports like this tend to make me suspicious that we’re not being told the whole story.

    http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/09/16/texas-14-year-old-arrested-for-bringing-homemade-clock-to-school-after-teacher/

WHY did his engineering teacher advise him to not show the alleged “clock” to anyone?

WHY are the police continuing to maintain custody of the “clock”?

    1. POST SCRIPT:

The photograph of the device doesn’t look like any clock I’ve ever seen.

      What do YOU think?

    2. No obvious explosive agents are visible.

But, what if the device was designed to remotely detonate explosives concealed in another location?

I’m not talking about reality, but merely a possibility that the police and his teachers (three of them!) may have been considering.

      1. TheChief

It is a bit complex for a simple clock that could be made from one IC, a battery holder, a couple of wires, a switch and a single LED display. So is it a clock or a timer?

Things that make youo go Hmmmmmmm…..

But not realy, I think paranoia got to the adults involved and it spun out of control due to his ethnicity because you know, hey racial profiling!

      2. John, if you examine the provided photo, all the briefcase contains is the power supply (lower center in the photo), a circuit board (upper center), and a large 4-digit red LED display near top. That’s it. No other circuitry. No kiss-kiss, no bang-bang.

Many Monday-morning quarterbacks are dismissing this as some sort of phobia, but if one is not familiar with electronics it might appear alarming. The teacher who reported it was an English teacher, so no surprise there.

        This probably would have blown over very quickly if CAIR and President Barry hadn’t stuck their oars in. Well that, and the fact that it occurred in Texas. We all know about them Texans and brown people, right? {/sarc}

    3. CLAW131

WHY the Hell are you asking us these questions?

If you are so suspicious and worried about this, call Fox news or the cops and teachers in Texas and ask them for answers.

In the meantime, go back to wandering from town to town looking for candy.

    4. A) It was never treated as a bomb.
      B) It was left with the student the entire time.
      C) The school was never evacuated.
      D) The bomb squad was never called.
      E) The clock and student were sent to the office by themselves.
      F) The clock and student were left in a counseling room by themselves.
      G) The police said it was not a bomb.
      H) The police arrested the student when he couldn’t explain anything other than it was a clock (i.e. he wouldn’t tell them what they wanted to hear).
      I) He was questioned without an advocate or his parents being there.
      J) His parents were finally called while he was in booking.
      K) His parents were called by a concerned secretary who told them their son was arrested.

Any other questions? He was harassed by a teacher for being a Muslim. It wasn’t because of a bomb, it was because he was different.

It’s a good thing the 14 year old who built a nuclear reactor wasn’t Muslim or they would have arrested him for building a dirty bomb rather than rewarding him with a scholarship.

    5. It appears now that this may have been about something more than a “clock.” First, the kid could not explain how he had “invented” the thing. He could not explain how he had assembled the pieces of electronics.

      Maybe he didn’t?

Artvoice.com has an article on “reverse engineering” the clock based on the pictures. ( http://blogs.artvoice.com/techvoice/2015/09/17/reverse-engineering-ahmed-mohameds-clock-and-ourselves/ ) It appears the clock was an older clock put into a pencil case.

In the comments, another person points out the clock may be an old 1980’s clock from Radio Shack. ( http://www.radioshackcatalogs.com/html/1986/h150.html )

Breitbart notes that the father of the kid is a noted “rabble rouser” for Islam. ( http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2015/09/18/real-story-istandwithahmed/ )

You sort of have to wonder whether this was a set up to show how paranoid people are of Muslims and Islamophobia. It is certainly beginning to look like that more and more.

No one likes picking on 14 year old kids, but then again, no one likes liars no matter what their age. (And no one likes fathers who use their lying kids to try and make political points either.)

I don’t think we’ll ever know the whole truth because the kid and his father will lawyer up and shut up, but what was once an interesting story of governmental overreaction has now taken on a different tone.

      And rightfully so.

      1. gitarcarver, I think you have the right of it. After reading about Daddy’s activism, alarm bells are going off. Feh.

    6. Ex-PH2

I saw that so-called clock on a news story and frankly, it bore no resemblance to a clock, from what I could see.

The sheep is laughing because he found out that he’s going to be “Pitching” and Birdbath is going to be “catching”.
      /as it should be.

      1. There was a fellow who commuted from an an exurb into the city who quite enjoyed the scenery he encountered during his drive.

Alas, recently the view was spoiled by the sight of a man having carnal knowledge of a sheep in plain sight of the road in a pasture.

The first few times the commuter tried to ignore the Bernathist vision, but after the fourth or fifth he just couldn’t take it any more. He backtracked to where the entrance to the property was, drove up to the house, and pounded on the door, expecting to provide a moral lecture.

The commuter was nonplussed by the sight of the 10-year-old boy who answered the door. When the youth asked what he wanted, he hesitated, then drove on. “Son, I need to speak with an adult here. There’s a man having sex with one of your sheep in the side pasture!

The boy shrugged and replied “That’s ok, that’s just my daaaaaad.”

Here is your weekend safety briefing. Be sure to conduct an inspection of your vehicle before hitting the road for Liberty. Make sure tires are inflated properly, headlights and turn signals are working, top off the windshield washer fluid, and for God’s sake, make sure you have a full tank of fuel. Otherwise, you will be sitting on the side of the road looking like a smacked ass. You have to be a special kind of stupid to run out of fuel.

    1. A Proud Infidel®™

And double check your fuel if you’re traveling by small airplane! Run out of fuel in one of those and you’re landing right there, hopefully in a field or pasture, but that’ll tear up your plane and leave you looking like a dumbass, and you’ll have no one to blame but yourself! Yeah you could sue someone, but what will that get you other than laughed out of the courthouse after your case is thrown out?

i see that Obama has nominated Eric Fanning as the first openly Gay Sec Army. Of course the announcement was made at 1700 this Friday afternoon. Don’t it seem like the Progs are obsessed with sex? And deviant sex at that. Welcome to the new army, it’s Fabulous.

    1. In the 1990s, he was on the staff of the House Armed Services Committee and later a special assistant in the Immediate Office of the Secretary of Defense. He later served as Associate Director of Political Affairs at the White House.

He also worked at Business Executives for National Security, a Washington, D.C.-based think-tank and at Robinson, Lerer & Montgomery, a strategic communications firm in New York City.

He served as Deputy Under Secretary and Deputy Chief Management Officer for the Department of the Navy beginning in July 2009. He was also Deputy Director of the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism.

He;s only ever served as a politician. Now, he’s going to be one of the highest ranking “officers” in the Army? Is he trying to get a coup or is this just Obama being a moron?

‘Don’t it seem like the Progs are obsessed with sex?’

Yes. Yes, it does. It seems that way, in the same way that 3 and 4-year-old children are curious about what you are doing in the bathroom with the door closed.

And while that kind of curiosity is normal, albeit annoying, in a toddler, it is not normal or healthy in an adult.

And in other news, this article says (scroll down to it) that 1880 French citizens are involved in jihadist networks, among other things.

And we’re supposed to take in some of this flotsam? Oh, yeah – Croatia is sending those migrants right back to Hungary.

  27. In 1969 – 1970, when I was a Specialist Four, E-4, Field Radio Relay and Carrier Equipment Repairman (MOS 31L20) at the Phu Lam Signal Battalion of the 1st Signal Brigade in Saigon, Republic of Viet Nam, I was curious about the rather odd looking, Swiss manufactured, Pilatus PC-6 “PORTER” STOL airplanes, with “AIR AMERICA” painted on them, which I would frequently see taking off from Tan Son Nhut Air Force Base.

Guys I worked with told me that, “AIR AMERICA”, was actually the Central Intelligence Agency, but I don’t recall anyone knowing anything about that aircraft, with its peculiar appearance.

Years later, when wondering why I never saw one of those airplanes anywhere in the United States, one of the counselors at the Vet Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, told me that the aircraft didn’t fly in the United States because the FAA refused to certify it.

I wonder why the FAA won’t certify the Pilatus PC-6 “Porter” aircraft to fly?

Anyway, here’s a couple of web sites with detailed information about the Pilatus PC-6 “Porter” STOL airplane, and the C.I.A. clandestine front organization, Air America:

    http://www.pilatus-aircraft.com/#16

    http://www.air-america.org/index.php/en/

I wonder if the Pilatus PC-6 “Porter” airplane can be modified with pontoons and be used as a float plane?

Do any of you know the answers to those questions?

I’m truly fascinated by everything I’ve seen about the Pilatus PC-6 “Porter” airplane.

When I purchased the TIME-LIFE set of books, “THE VIETNAM EXPERIENCE”, I was pleased to see one of the volumes had a full-page picture of the Pilatus PC-6 “Porter” airplane, plus having information about Air America.

Yes, I’ve seen the Hollywood movie, “AIR AMERICA”, a couple of times, but I don’t recall seeing the Pilatus PC-6 “Porter” STOL aircraft featured in that movie.

    1. John:
The Air Force SPECOP community is now using a Pilatus PC-12 AF U-28.
There are also some other pretty unique aircraft that they lease for particular operations.
This link has a good description of it’s usage, and some nice photos. I know a crew chief who is flying them out of Hurlburt Field for the Air Force.

Here’s a little news item about why Vlad Putin (bless his little KGB heart) decided ‘suddenly’ to send military junk/peeps to Syria.

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/09/18/us-mideast-crisis-syria-putin-idUSKCN0RI1RT20150918

Yes, he is worried that if Assad is kaput, those Bad Boys of ISIS will come lookin’ for him. 🙂

Toldja so, Vlad, you simp. You’d better find a way to guard the Bosporus if you expect to have access to the Med. Otherwise, you’ll have to launch from Sebastopol.

    But what do I know?

Meanwhile, the Turks are pounding the PKK camps.

      1. I haven’t seen a hedgehog since I was a boy in Spring Lake, North Carolina, and picked one up in the yard in front of our house.

    2. Several years ago, when I was patrolling the ranch on horseback, the beavers created a real threat, as the stumps of the felled saplings would have impaled me if I were thrown from my horse.

Maneuvering my horse through their territory along the riverbank was like riding through a forest of embedded spears.

  37. I enjoyed a great Saturday afternoon here at the new farm. (I am loving having a longer range than at the old place.), having a Ranger Instructor friend, his wife and his brother up to sling lead down range. We zeroed a very nice AR-15, did some plinking with my .22 Henry Carbine, rand a couple of magazines of ammo through a Winchester Model 74 Lever gun in 30-30, and them moved in closer to shoot a bunch with a .40 Springfield, and my .38 Wheel gun.
A good time was had by all, and we look forward to doing it all again soon. My guests were particularly impressed with the progress on the improvements to my new place. Lots of my custom wood/epoxy treatment showing now.

I’m not there yet. Seems like every weekend I work my ass off and don’t have time to play. Working on installing a wood stove this weekend and next. Patching fence, building a corral style hog trap, etc. Had another hog in my 4×8 trap so I handed my .22 mag pistol to my neighbor and he shot it, pulled it out, and took off with it. Looks like it will be a good year for wild hog meat. None of these days I am going to build an epic treehouse and have some fun.

On another note, I splurged and bought 2 smoked sausage packs at 12 oz each, and put them into the crockpot with a mixture of coarsely chopped onions, pinto beans, red kidney beans, and Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce.

It is cooking now and will be my supper tonight with some cornbread plus fresh vegs on the side.

I also have a pound of lean ground beef, crushed tomatoes, red kidney beans, onions, grated cheese, limes and spices for hearty chili, and a lime/garlic salsa for the tortilla chips. That gets fixed tomorrow for dinner.

I have this and several really good projects going for me, and I know that a bunch of you have put playground stuff together for the kids, worked on things that make a difference yours or someone else’s lives, spent some worthwhile time with the family, and just generally enjoyed the good things in your lives.

And then there’s that microscopic 2 or 3 who have nothing but spite, jealousy, and crappy do-nothing lives.

They should be even a hundredth as lucky as we are. They just don’t know how.

    1. Amen, my good friend. I will e-mail you a few photos of life here on the farm in the morning. Having a great weekend, having to pick and choose the best/most entertaining things to do from a plethora of choices.

Yeah, playground fort is done and the kids had a blast on it for the whole day. I though, am just a LITTLE sunburned from the endeavor.

Seems that someone forgot about things like sunscreen, hats and UV radiation while he was lifting large chunks of wood and assembling it into a toy for the ages!!

I had a blazing fire going last night, in one of my three outdoor firepits. Walked up to my wine cellar and pulled out the last cigar my deceased wife had bought for me. Enjoyed the cigar with some infused blackberry brandy I made last year. Toasted my wife. I do miss her so. However life is still good! With the life style I have , I’m one lucky guy!
