Weekend open thread

I know it’s early, but AW1Ed asked for it and since my son is home for the first Thanksgiving in 17 years, I have to agree.

Our best wishes for the holidays to all.

Wonder how many Mermites we toted that day?

    Happy Turkey Day to all.

Mermites. Forgot about that “word,” – more like a “reference” to “possible, palatable food.” Although I do enjoy mermite coffee.

Happy Thanksgiving to our TAH Family?!

  20. 2/17 Air Cav

I BELIEVE THIS IS THE 6TH YEAR FOR THIS POSTING. I GUESS IT’S MY PERSONAL TAH THANKSGIVING TRADITION BY NOW. FEEL FREE TO ADD A NAME OF ANYONE YOU LIKE, WHATEVER THE DATE OR CONFLICT IN WHICH THEY JOINED THE FALLEN.

Today many of us will be with family for a Thanksgiving day of turkey, football, and squabbling. We will think of loved ones who are no longer at the table and say a prayer of thanks for them and our many blessings. We will remember others too, those who made the supreme sacrifice in service to our country. Below is a sampling, by year, of those whose sacrifice was made in South Vietnam on Thanksgiving Day itself. When I started this small effort, I quickly found that there were far too many men to list here whose casualty date fell on Thanksgiving. For instance, on Thanksgiving in 1968, 14 men died, although only three are listed below. Perhaps you will read their names and know one. In a very real sense, regardless of our age, our dates of service, or our branch–we knew each of them. God bless them all and God bless their families, every day but, especially, today.

    1. Claw

Just a small back story to the Thanksgiving Day 1971 casualties.

All three of those men were crewmembers on a HH-53C Super Jolly Green Giant which had taken heavy fire while rescuing 14 survivors of a crashed C-7 Caribou. After dropping off the survivors, they were limping their way back to home station when once again they took more fire and crashed into a river.

All in all, both good and bad Ju-Ju happened that day.

      Rest in Peace, Airmen.

  21. MrBill

This will be the first Thanksgiving in forever that MrsBill and I have not hosted dinner at our house. We don’t have any family in town but usually have a group of similarly situated friends that we host, but this year everyone is out of town. So, we have lunch reservations at a nice restaurant, and then will settle in for a long day of football. Rooting for Texas A&M to beat LSU.

    Happy Thanksgiving to all!

    1. Eden

WHOOP!! Although without Trevor Knight, I don’t know how well we’ll do. :/

  22. Eggs

Happy Thanksgiving from the chilly shores of Seneca Lake (haven’t been in the hometown for Thanksgiving in 30 some years).

  23. Pineywoods NCO

We are sleeping in for a while and then getting started with the cooking. Ham, turkey, green bean casserole, pistachio pudding, loaded mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and rolls with some moscato wine and apple cheesecake pie.

We are making a meal for us and one for all the cats as well.

    Happy Thanksgiving all honorable people.

From The Pineywoods NCO, the wife and the cats.

    1. 2/17 Air Cav

“green bean casserole”…My wife is working today but promised that she’ll make it when she gets home. Yum!

      1. Hack Stone

I just finished my Thanksgiving repast. Hack Stone and his lovely bride Rosetta Stone are hosting friends this afternoon at Stately Stone Manor. A coworker/retired SeaBee claims that he has never had string bean cream of mushroom casserole until now. How could a man live 56 years and never had string bean cream of mushroom casserole? I have only known him for 16 years. Could it be that he is a sleeper agent for a terrorist organization?

        1. HackStone, my mother could not figure out how to do those 1940s traditional Thanksgiving/holiday dishes, for the life of her, even though the recipe for that was on every Campbell’s mushroom soup can. The only time in my entire life that I ever had it was when I went to visit a friend in Chicago at her parents’ townhouse and her mother put that on the table. So when I got home, I sked my mother why she never fixed that dish. She just gave me a blank look.
Some things simply do not move from one family to another.

  24. I joined my friends, the Army Ranger Instructors, of the Rangers at Camp Rudder, for our annual Thanksgiving Dinner in the DFAC. Prior to dinner, we enjoyed Cadre Jumps and a pretty damned good party in “The Gator Lounge”. While there I met, talked with, and got a handshake and a coin from the Commandant of the Army Infantry School at Ft. Benning, Brig. Gen.Jones, as he thanked me for my work as a Swamp Ranger:

  25. I wish everyone who shows up here a happy Thanksgiving and a pleasantly lazy weekend.

    1. I am thankful for having had a pretty great life, for the great friends that I have, and thankful for the health that I enjoy today. I have done pretty much every thing I wanted to do in life, but there are some things that I have chosen not to do, such as:
I have never taken off in an airplane while knowing that I had an inadequate amount of fuel. I have never suffered the humiliation of having been disbarred from the practice of law, nor have I ever been found to claim to be anything more than I truly am. So much to be thankful for, including being called “Friend” by a Ranger, Successful Attorney, and all around great guy:

Last comment I saw from 3/17 Air Cav was on 2 Oct 2016.

Anybody out there have eyeballs on him?

    Hello, Hello 3/17. SITREP, please.

    1. 3/17 Air Cav

Claw…….I’ve been a little busy the past six weeks. Alumni weekend with my baseball buddies. Bird hunting in North Dakota.

During alumni weekend got into a little trouble with the law. DUI so now I’m going to be going thru the diversion program in Oregon. Too much fun!

The jeep is up and running, and the Mule left today for repairs.

All and all life is good! I’m still romancing the little chickadee next door!

      Take good care Charlie!

        Roger. Thanx for the update.

Be careful out there. Make sure you wear a raincoat no matter the weather.

Hope you had a good Thanksgiving. Small gathering (5) at Stately Claw Manor this year. The Brother-In-Law and I lost our asses to the females in Double Deck Pinochle.

        That’s all. Out.

  30. OWB

May all enjoy a wonderful day.

Have already overeaten, and have at least one additional stop to make today. Is there time for a short nap between now and then? Oops. There may not really be an option. ZZZZZZzzzzz….

Some might argue that I need psychological help. That’s fine by me – the more they argue the more tater tots I can sneak off their plates.

    Happy Turducken Day, everyone!

  32. FatCircles0311

Super duper shitty thanksgiving this year for me, but it could always be worse.

Enjoy the time with friends and family because they can be gone the next day.

    1. Eden

      I’m sorry, FC0311.

    2. A Proud Infidel®™

      Sorry to hear that, FC0311.

      1. 2/17 Air Cav

FC0311. We had two TAHers lose their spouses over the last few months. This day, the first for them in decades, no doubt, w/o their life partner, is especially tough. I guess the only way to look at these things is to be thankful for the memories. Not everyone is blessed with them.

    3. Green Thumb

Keep your chin up and try to remember the good times.

      My condolences.

    4. A loss, whether it is someone very close, a favorite pet, or just a person who’s company one has been able to enjoy is still a loss. We feel a bit emptier, and somehow know that we must move on without them and the input that they offered our lives. My condolences to you, friend.

  33. Instinct

So, since Ex-PH2 hasn’t posted her recipe, I’ll post mine for Chocolate Mousse Pie.

    Crust

    8 Reduced-fat chocolate graham crakers
    3 tb 70% buttermilk-vegetable oil
    3 tb Honey
    Filling
    1 Envelope unflavored gelatin
    1/4 cup cold water
    12 oz Evaporated skim milk
    3 tb Unsweetened cocoa powder
7 oz Dark (semisweet) chocolate; broken into peices
    2 ts Vanilla
16 oz Cool Whip non-fat non-dairy whipped topping

    For CRUST
Preheat oven to 350F. For crust, break up graham crackers; place in food processor. Process into fine crumbs.
Add honey and vegetable oil spread. With on/off motion, pulse until evenly moistened.
Turn into 9″ springform pan. Spread crumbs evenly over bottom of pan and 1 1/2″ up sides. cover with plastic wrap; press crust firmly using a straight sided glass filled partway with pennies for weight. Remove plastic. Bake crust 5 minutes.
Transfer pan to wire rack to cool completely.

    For FILLING
For filling, in saucepan, sprinkle gelatin over cold water. Let stand 1 minute until softened.
Place pan over low heat; stir until gelatin dissolves.
In another saucepan, bring evaporated milk to boil, stirring. Stir in cocoa, sugar and chocolate. With wire whisk mix until smooth.
Stir in vanilla and gelatin mixture. Pour into bowl using a strainer to filter out undissolved cocoa powder; cool to room temperature.
Refrigerate, stirring every 10 minutes until mixture thickens and begins to mound, about 30 – 45 minutes.
Gently fold in whipped topping. Pour into crust. Refrigerate until set, 2 hours.
For decorative effects, grate the remaining chocolate and sprinkle on top and then decorate with more whipped topping.
    Makes 12 servings

    1. 2/17 Air Cav

      My directions are similar:
      Step#1. Get in car.
      Step#2. Drive to bakery.
      Step#3. Get out of car.
      Step#4. Buy whatever looks good.

    2. Bill M

      Chocolate Mousse Pie

      First, find a chocolate mousse….

    3. Eden

Non-fat, non-dairy, unsweetened, unflavored? LOL! No.

    4. Step #1 – Go to Bakers Corner
Step #2 – Buy French Silk pie
Step #3 – Go home, put pie in fridge
Step #4 – Make hot tea to go with pie
Step #5 – Have dinner first, then pie

      1. To Baker’s Corner for French Silk? I thought you ladies shopped Victoria’s Secret for your “French Silk”.

      2. Nah, that’s a different store!

The classic French Silk pie is a chocolate custard pie with a whipped cream top. It has to be made from scratch, and is somewhat like the chocolate mousse, but it’s a bit smoother in texture. And you put chocolate curls on the top of the whipped cream.

  34. jonp

I am thankful for Al Gore for inventing the internet, and for Daniel Bernath. The reason that I am thankful for Daniel Bernath is that he is the perfect example of when someone should cross over to the other side. I told my lovely bride Rosetta Stone that if I ever behave or smell like Daniel Bernath, just smother me with a pillow while I sleep.

  45. ex-OS2

I am thankful for posting first on the WOT. It has been a long, tough fight but I overcame.

    Cocksuckers.

  46. I’m thankful for several things;

    a) – This Aint Hell, and the Boss who lets me write and post stuff here
    b) – The company of friends here and elsewhere
    c) – Living in a free country
    d) – The internet
    e) – My cats, despite the hair, drooling and catboxes
    f) – Did I say freedom?

I checked the current inflation rate for this year through October, at this link:
    http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/inflation/current-inflation-rates/

It appears that it is going to stay above 1.5%. I hope this means that the .3% COLA promised will expand to 1.6% in January. I have cats to feed.
