“Ric” Bucklew Update

Bucklew

Back in February, we talked a bit about “Ric” Bucklew who claimed to be a Marine Recon, SEAL and Army Special Forces troop. When we asked for his records, the NPRC gave us a set of records related to his service in the Navy and gave us a “no service” response on his Marine and Army service. I suspected that he had some Marine Corps service, so I went to him about it, since the NPRC told us he had none three times. Ric wasn’t as receptive as I had hoped. In fact, he even sent his DD214 to other people with the condition that they wouldn’t send it to me. Well, here it is;

Another Bucklew Dd214a

You’ll notice that down in the Education Block it says that he had Marine Recon training “ReconMar – MCI- no date”. He took the correspondence course, (MCI means Marine Corps Institute) but we’re not sure if he completed it or not. Folks tell me that if he had completed the course, there would be a date, but there’s no date. That’s the extent of his training as a Recon Marine. He did spend nine months at Division Recon, Camp Lejeune from January, 1970 until September. During that time, 11 days after he was assigned to the Recon unit, he attended Rigger School and he was assigned as a rigger to the Division Recon unit. Then he went to Camp Pendleton, CA and shipped out to Vietnam. He was assigned to a Security Company in the Headquarters and Service Battalion of the Logistics Command for 4 months. Then he went to 3rd Recon Battalion, but 3rd Recon Battalion left Vietnam in early 1969. He joined them in Okinawa for three months;

So, yeah, we’re sorry that the NPRC technician didn’t check hard enough for a Marine Corps record. We took three shots at it and it came back the same every time. But including the DD214 in the request helped. I asked “Ric” for his DD214 before I published the post, and all he wanted to do was call me names.

I suspected that he had some Marine Corps service, but that he was still lying about his service and that’s the way it all ended. He wasn’t a Recon Marine in Vietnam. It looks like the Marines took advantage of his services as a rigger. Then he went to the Navy and he was a rigger for them, too. Then he told his lies about being a Recon Marine in Vietnam and a Navy SEAL for decades hoping that no one would ever check on him.

In fact, he lied to his parents and the folks at home while he was in Vietnam;

article-bucklew

Since when are Recon Marines assigned to the Force Logistics Command?

Bucklew likes to tell folks that we sent the information to NPRC with the wrong PII just so we could get a “no service” response – that makes no sense. He also says that we did it for political retribution. We’ve probably busted more Republicans than Democrats since we began this endeavor. We just don’t like liars.

Well, I guess the above shows that a few people here do indeed know a thing or two about the FOIA process. Maybe even a bit more than you do, Bucklew. (smile)

    1. Ric bucklew

A few people know the FOIA process!! You are fucking liars and cowards hiding behind your mommies skirt with a fake name. Would you like to hear what the Marines have to say about your FOIA requests??? Go ahead and block me boy. I will see you soon – fave to face. You have NO idea who you are fucking with

      1. Hondo

(yawn) Got anything intelligent or meaningful to say, Rikki-boi?

You’ve been busted, dipstick. Give it a rest.

        1. 2/17 Air Cav

He keeps harping on the screen name thingy. Funny how over the years, the reason that so many frauds, liars, and valor thieves have been exposed here and elsewhere is that they initially benefit from using their real names. Ultimately, when the hammer drops, they wish they hadn’t. But that’s the nature of their game. They must ID themselves in order to assume false credit and honors not truly theirs. And thank goodness real names are not posted here, given the threats that these miscreants post.

“I will see you soon – fave to face. You have NO idea who you are fucking with”

            That there is a threat.

            1. Hondo

So it would appear. And it’s in writing – and is also both documented and traceable.

              1. 2/17 Air Cav

Sentences can be constructed to mask an intended threat, to make it less explicit for parsing in the event of legal action. It’s a fool’s game. From my perspective, a reasonable person reading his words would conclude that he intends to instill apprehension of physical harm in you. He writes, using an interstate electronic medium, that he will soon see you in person. He immediately follows that up with the statement that you have no idea who you are fucking with. Gee, what does that mean? Perhaps it means that he thinks himself to be a superior speller to you and will show up unannounced to face off with you in a spelling bee. Best of luck with that explanation “Ric bucklew.”

      2. Bobo

Hey, Bucky. How are things going at UAL? Still pulling in the big bucks? Getting a little heat from your flying buddies? Do they know who they’re fucking with? Why handing out USMC DD-214s to your buddies while keeping them from us? Afraid that someone who knows anything about DD-214s, the USMC, and the 3rd BNs Vietnam history will put it all together?

Enjoy yourself the next time your in the cockpit with an honest veteran. I’m sure that the conversation will be interesting.

Ric, I would like to hear what information that you may have in regard to Marines and FOIA requests.

      6. Jarhead

Hey tough guy….I have an idea. It’s a fucking idiot who has been able to bully his way through life with strongly worded bullshit stories practiced to sound believable. YEH, I’d like to hear what we Marines have to say about the FOIA requests. Only thing I’ve known up to now is that the requests normally expose frauds such as you. The requests are made thanks to inconsistent lies you have been preaching, that eventually found the wrong ears. “No idea who you are fucking with”? Are you shittin’ me? A character who claims to see someone “fave” to face can’t spell, so how in the world can we take you serious? Keep running your mouth big boy, we’re all shaking in our boots. BTW, exactly who are you claiming to “see you soon”? You plan on meeting somebody in a rest room maybe? As if you need to be told, there IS a difference between Marines and combat-experienced Marines. You are NOT the latter or would not be making idle threats to which no one is buying. Do yourself a favor and shut your register down. Go get a job at a used car lot where you belong.

What no Army SF? I’m so distraught about that!

    1. Hondo

The Army FOIA reply may still be pending. FOIA replies don’t always all come back at the same time, especially if they were requested individually by service.

That said, based on what we’ve seen so far in FOIA replies for USMC and USN service vice his claims regarding same – I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting to see SF qualification. (smile)

Haven’t you guys ever heard of “Force Logistics” Recon? They drive the first vehicle in the supply convoy.

Force Logistics Recon is when your buddy distracts the supply clerk while you swipe some batteries for your AN/PRC-77.

This guy has a problem: doesn’t like having his nose rubbed in it. And he’s been fabricating stuff for so long he can’t tell the real stuff from his fantasies.

Geez, all he had to do was tell the truth.

  6. OWB

So, he’s still a lying PoS? With even less reason for being a lying PoS?

Dang. So much to respect, had he not thrown it all away.

  7. Dave Hardin

Bucklew seems to be one of those guys that uses “served with…” as a way to stretch the truth.

Ya, Ya, he served ‘with’ Recon. I guess to civilians that plays well. He served ‘with’ Navy SEALS.

The Vietnam Campaign medal requires 6 months of service in the RVN. It appears as if he fell a bit short of that too. But whats a few weeks difference when it comes to participation awards?

Instead of stepping up and clarifying his service it seems he gets a case of the red ass and makes things worse. He should be proud of his service as it was. This guy has made a career out of splitting hairs.

    Phuk ewe Bucklew.

    1. Hondo

Yep. Another term for that practice is “qualification by association”. You see it quite often. And it’s just as freaking illegitimate as baldfaced lying about which units you served in and/or what you really did.

Reminds me of a wedding announcement I once read for a fellow I knew personally…it said he had “attended the University of Virginia” but the truth was that he had gone to a seminar that took place at a small facility rented from UVa. The announcement also mentioned that the groom was employed by “The Southland Corporation,” which was true, but it left out the fact that he worked at Southland’s primary subsidiary…7-Eleven.

At least he never tried to steal valor.

Dave, a couple of worthy mentions in the category, both completed in 1930, were the Howard Hughes classic Hell’s Angels and the original Dawn Patrol, which had a remake in 1938. Hughes himself was apparently obsessive about aerial action detail, and had both WWI vintage aircraft and pilots available during filming.

One of the things that’s always seemed remarkable about the warplane technology of that era is that it took place barely a decade after the Wright brothers first flew at Kitty Hawk.

Since when did “Lying Sack o’ Shit” become a political party?

    1. Hondo

Since, well, never. My guess is that that claim was merely a convenient ploy to distract casual readers from the issue at hand: Bucklew’s official military records not matching what he claimed to have done while serving.

      1. Old Trooper

I think he used the “politics” shit because he doesn’t agree with what Kyle did and doesn’t like others recognizing Kyle’s achievements. I guess he assumes that everyone that recognizes Kyle’s achievements is a “right-wing whack job”.

        1. Hondo

Perhaps. But attacking the messenger (via questioning their motive) is an old rhetorical technique often used by those who cannot defend their argument against fact. It deflects attention away from relevant facts into an area that is often irrelevant to the subject. And it often works.

    2. David

  14. AskaMarine

If he embellished about his military experience, is there a possibilty he embellished his pilot’s license? Or is the FAA pretty strict on doing background checks on schooling, flight experience, etc?

Don’t know if the above has been already addressed.

    1. OWB

No clue how they do things today, but they used to be pretty picky about certifications, supporting data, and all those other pesky details. This clown should have had to prove his qualifications to quite a few people, many of whom would not have taken his word for any of it prior to being issued a commercial license or gotten his first check ride with an airline.

  15. Just An Old Dog

The guy was a chute’ rigger in Lejuene. His time in 3rd Recon was with line companies ( B and D) as a Scout and a driver.
He has a CAR. Not saying he was a trail assassin but he saw some action, and not as a pogue.
For the longest time “Force” Recon was not a Division asset, it belonged to the expeditionary force and fell under the FSSG.

  16. Just An Old Dog

While he is probably bullshitted about his Navy/Army service his records DO support that he served as a Recon Marine in Vietnam.
His job title was scout and driver. He was not a rigger, and he served in two line companies, not in H&S.

    1. Hondo

JAOD: it may technically be true that the man served with 3rd Recon in Vietnam. However, a comparison of his actual dates in Vietnam (listed on his DD214) with his assignments reveals “the rest of the story”.

Looking at his DD214, best-case he was in Vietnam from 701108 through 710625 – 7 months and 18 days. (I say “best case” as the dates for Vietnam service on that DD214 overlap; I used the most generous possible case above, which was continuous service in Vietnam for the above period.) No other Vietnam service is listed on his DD214, and his record of assignments doesn’t seem to support any service in Vietnam outside that best-case period.

The first roughly 5 months of his service in Vietnam (701109 through 710413) was spent in Security Co, H&S Bn, 1st FSR. He then transferred to Co B, 3rd Recon Bn – for just short of 2 weeks (710414-710426).

On 710427, his record of assignments shows he was reassigned to H&S Co, BLT 1/9. He remained in H&S Co, BLT 1/9 for nearly 2 months, until 710622.

On 710623, he was again transferred to Co B, 3rd Recon. His DD214 says he left Vietnam 2 days later, on 710625.

Bucklew thus apparently had a grand total of 16 days assigned to Co B 3rd Recon while in Vietnam – one assignment of 13 days, and another for his last 3 days in-country. I won’t speculate on the reason for his very short (13 day) first assignment to Co B 3rd Recon while in Vietnam and his subsequent return to a H&S unit. I would guess the second assignment to Co B 3rd Recon (starting 2 days before his departure from Vietnam) was for convenience due to his pending separation from the USMC. My guess is that the unit was rotating out, and he was assigned to them for transport back to CONUS. He returned to CONUS and separated less than 30 days after departing Vietnam (per both his DD214 and the FOIA reply, he separated on 710721). His assignment to D Co 3rd Recon Bn appears to have begun on 710709 – after his departure from Vietnam.

I’d guess his CAR was most likely earned while assigned to either Security Co, H&S Bn or H&S Co, BLT 1/9 vice while assigned to 3rd Recon – he served with those units for the vast majority (7+ months) of his time in Vietnam, and perimeter probes/attacks were reputedly not unknown at US installations in Vietnam. However, since we don’t have the date of award for his CAR that’s only a guess on my part. It’s possible he might have earned that during his 16 days assigned to 3rd Recon while in Vietnam.

Bottom line: yeah, he apparently served with 3rd Recon Bn while in Vietnam – for all of 16 days. But his DD214 and record of assignments say that the rest of his time in Vietnam appears to have been spent in H&S units.

      1. Silentium Est Aureum

16 days? It took me longer than that to do the check in sheet at my first command.

      2. Just An Old Dog

The interesting thing about his duty assignment is that he was listed as a Scout/Driver both with H&S Company 1/9 and Recon Battalion.
There is a chance he was with the Scout/Sniper Platoon in 1/9.
I’m looking through his records and playing Devil’s advocate.

        1. Hondo

Understood that you’re playing Devil’s Advocate. That’s why I did a more detailed look at things above.

Cant speak to USMC H&S organization of that era, so you may well be right about his H&S Co BLT 1/9 assignment. But if I recall correctly, the man claimed Force Recon service; I don’t recall him claiming Scout/Sniper service. And I believe the two are distinctly different (please advise if I’m wrong).

          1. IDC SARC

IME:Recon/Sniper = Different schools, but Recon has designated marksmen, SOTG trained scout snipers and even Quantico trained scout snipers integrated into the platoons.

*I never got Sniper school…though I tried but only made the standby list. (Corpsmen aren’t exactly a priority for that school)

            1. HMCS(FMF) ret.

Yea, we never got to do the “fun stuff”… but I got to use a 240G once, which was neat!

      3. Perry Gaskill

One issue with Bucklew’s DD-214 is a matter of the timeline. The 3rd Marine Division, and 3rd Recon, was in Okinawa after pulling out of Viet Nam in late ’69. Bucklew was probably in country November ’70-April ’71 and April-June of ’71 but it was with the H&SC of the 1/9 in Danang. These might have been two separate assignments to either provide perimeter security or as part of a continuing draw down. The two-week gap was with the 3rd Recon in Okinawa. Here’s a link to a chronology:

        http://www.3rdrecon.org/lineageo.htm

It would also explain why the original DD-214 lists a Viet Nam Service Medal but not a Republic of Viet Nam Campaign Medal. Such a split deployment sequence might seem strange now, but probably wasn’t all that unusual at the time.

        1. Hondo

That could easily could be the case, PG. I was giving the benefit of the doubt above and allowing for the possibility of subordinate elements of 3rd Recon being in-country at the time.

Ric Bucklew….Now that the night shift mentality has kicked in and cleared some unnecessary thoughts, this comes to you from one Marine to another. Obviously you served in the Marine Corps, be proud of that. Regardless as to what you did or did not do, you have been exposed as having embellished your military record. No reason to argue on this web site, too many who are able to separate fly poo poo from pepper when it comes to unraveling a seemingly questionable D D 214. You at least served, and went on to be a commercial pilot…something many of us would have been thrilled to combine in one life time. Face it Ric, you were eventually caught embellishing your military history with a bunch of generalizations meant to imply to a gullible public that you were more than you had actually been. Good analogy..Vietnam Veterans Asociation…ANYONE can legitimately be a member had they only served in the military DURING the RVN war. No obligation to have served in country. But a certain percentage of them are to this day playing that card to the hilt trying to make people think they actually served in RVN.
So here’s where you are right now. The last thing you want to do is muddy the water even further by raising hell and especially making idle threats on this site. You CAN NOT possibly win, all you can do is dig yourself in deeper and cause further embarrassment. All who post on this site are serious about military service and unsubstantiated claims. All of us stick together and would support any other who had been threatened on this site. It’s simply a case of comaraderie you wouldn’t understand until you have been posting for a while on here. Most of us don’t know one another, but have a gut feel for the others because we all resent posers. My sincere recommendation to you is to stop posting and offering yourself as fresh red meat to a bunch of hungry lions. We give you the credit for serving as a Marine, but are ready to pounce on those who continue embellishment.
You made a mistake Ric, suck it up and live with it. In due time it will be forgotten by most all who have seen this fiasco, including your personal friends. You WERE a Marine and still ARE a Marine Ric. Don’t embarrass any more of us as well as yourself. Forget and move on. Most of all , ACT LIKE A MARINE. You owe it to yourself and others. Semper Fi.

He’s back on the property at UAL after requaling last month. He’s apparently keeping quiet and hoping nobody has seen this thread but pilots have long memories, especially about SCABS and liars. Fortunately for him, he’s just a liar! Gone for good in November. Buh bye!!!
