Fox News reports that Islamist extremists attacked an Egyptian mosque today resulting in at least 200 killed and 130 injured, according to Egyptian news agencies;
The extremists launched an attack on the al-Rawdah mosque in the town of Bir al-Abd, some 25 miles from the North Sinai provincial capital of el-Arish, Egypt’s state news agency MENA reported. The attack appeared to be the latest by the area’s local Islamic State affiliate.
The security officers said the men opened fire on worshipers during prayers while driving in off-road vehicles. A Ministry of Health spokesman said the terrorists set off a bomb during the attack.
“They (the extremists) were shooting at people as they left the mosque,” a resident told Reuters.
“They were shooting at the ambulances too,” the resident continued.
Unarmed churchgoers seem to be the best targets. No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks yet.

The extremists reportedly approached and fired at the mosque from four “off-road” vehicles and blew up vehicles to block worshipers from exiting the mosque, the AP reported citing three police officers.

It is forbidden (Haram) to leave Islam. It is actually one of the worst transgressions in that belief system. Thus the apostate is beyond the pale, and to be killed as expeditiously as possible.
The various sects, especially the main Sunni and Shia sects, see -any- deviance as apostasy, not unbelief. The strict interpreters of those sects essentially justify homicidal psychosis.
This little difference explains the carnage, for example the Iran Iraq war, and Islamic State slaughtering every Muslim that isn’t them.

The news media seems to have done a poor job of explaining the dynamic of what happened in Egypt. According to reports, ISIS militants were responsible for carrying out an attack on a Sufi mosque, but there hasn’t been a motive presented.
ISIS apparently grew from the remnants of a minority Sunni faction in Iraq following the fall of Saddam. The Sufi faction of Islam is also predominately Sunni, and amounts to a mystic cult. Why would ISIS want to attack them?
People, even crazy-ass terrorists, tend to do things for a reason. What was hoped to be gained by killing those at a Sufi mosque in Egypt?

What was the goal? Terror.
What is to be gained? The same thing that AQIZ (Zarqawi’s organization and the father of ISIS) wanted when it bombed the Golden Mosque in Samraa: to deepen then exploit the differences between Sunni and Shi’a.
Review the history: Egypt, and the Sinai specifically, have a special significance in jihadi thought. Remember that while the Sinai is Egyptian territory, it was seized by th e Israelis in the ‘73 war, was returned as of the Camp David Accords, and is patrolled by the MFO.
More importantly, the Accords wer one of the justifications for the Sadat assasination, which imprisoned and shaped the thinking of two key jihadi figures: Al Rahman (the Blind Sheik),and Zawahiri, the spiritual founder of al Qaeda.
I’m sure the Egyptian media is asking the people of their fine and historic nation to just give up a few more of their plentiful individuals freedoms for a little more security. If so, this will never happen again.

When will our stateside citizens learn from these events? Concepts such as soft targets, secondary ambush, situational awareness. FBI can only be so good. I hate to sound paranoid, and I hope I don’t come off that way, but I continue to be amazed by the vast majority who think that “assault rifle bans” and gun free zones will protect them while never learning anything from events beyond our borders and the nearest Starbucks service area.
