For some reason, the Air Force Times allowed anti-Christian jihadist Mikey Weinstein of the mis-named Military Religious Freedom Foundation to write another of his fact-starved op-eds in their pages.
Last week, the FBI managed to thwart a massive bombing in Kansas. The horrific plot was extensive, planned over eight months by three members of a militia group who called themselves the “Crusaders.” Their target was carefully picked: 120 Somali immigrants living in a small apartment block, one unit of which was serving as a mosque.
This kind of terroristic behavior is exactly what we’ve been afraid of at the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, of which I am founder and president.
He continues on trying to tie the terroristic intentions of these “Crusaders” to Air Force units which have adopted the title for their units;
In 2006, the 523rd Fighter Squadron, based at Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico, was calling itself The Crusaders and using an emblem consisting of a sword, four crosses and a medieval knight’s helmet. This was one of MRFF’s earliest complaints on this specific subject, and it’s been a constant throughout the past decade. (The squadron was mothballed after MRFF’s exposure.)
In 2012 MRFF demanded that Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 122 discontinue use of the Crusaders moniker and a logo that featured a red cross on a white shield. The issue had already been dealt with in 2008, when the offensive name had been replaced with “Werewolves” and the insignia removed from plane tails. The commanding officer decide to restore the offensive name and imagery, but strong objections from MRFF convinced a three-star general to step in.
He goes on to name a couple of other incidents and ends his pointless screed;
The struggle against the Crusader terminology and graphic visuals continues. The Army signage at Ft. Rucker, Alabama still defiantly displays the offensive red cross. There are other U.S. military units following suit. Too many.
We won’t stop fighting the gross injustice and unconstitutional bullying of military personnel by Crusader-themed imagery and language. It only leads to gruesome, hate-filled incidents like the carnage narrowly averted in southwest Kansas.
First of all, the Air Force Times should be ashamed that they gave this shill a forum from which to preach to airmen about his fleecing of the American public. Many of these Crusader images and units have been around since the United States started participating in global conflicts. The only “gross injustice” going on here, is the distraction from war-fighter’s missions that Mikey and his crew have manufactured to wallow in his $300,000/year salary from MRFF.
The First Amendment says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion….” When Mikey shows us that Congress has made such a law, then he has a complaint. Otherwise, STFU, Mikey.
Thanks to Bobo for the link.

It is amazing how intolerant and benighted these freedom-from-religion folks are.
Remember that joke about the vegan, the atheist, and the crossfitter who walk into a bar? They make sure everybody knows within thirty seconds.
Whinesteiner is attention-whoring again, huh? Someone should sew his ass and his mouth shut.
Ah-ha, but (pun intended) where does one start and the other end, beings that they are inter connected or as some would say “one in the same”.
Oh, now I have another headache from such deep thought far too early in the morning for this…
Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.
Dr T
IIRC, werewolf was the nickname for the S.S, it could be argued that the new title of the 523rd is just as offensive as the old one. Or, we can acknowledge that Sometimes, a cool nickname is a cool nickname.
The Werewolf teams were SS guys ordered to carry on a terrorist insurgency against the Allies after the Nazis surrendered. They pulled a few attacks, but weren’t as active as you’d think.
Still, on principle your analogy is dead-on-balls.
Shut it douchebag.
So, not only does the Air Force Times give credence to this crap, but the Air Force and Marines, or should I say the DoD at large, caved in and changed a Squadrons name in order to appease these ass hats. Pretty soon the fighters will be rainbow colors with pretty pony unicorns on the tails, covered in glitter and glue. Or better still, in the eyes of these, “America is awful” commandos of cowardice, no fighters at all.
Fuck them. Our military is in the business of killing people and destroying their ability to wage war. There is nothing pretty about it. It is a fearful thing and should be. But to me, the shark nose painted Cobras and Huey gunships of my day were a blessing to behold and if that image gave mental and emotional pause to the enemy, great!
My favorite was in the old days of SAC, when some bombers had the SAC “fist of steel” on the side but holding instead, a hairy scrotum torn off by the roots, blood dripping and all.
We should not come to a war “in peace”. We should come to kill and destroy as much as possible and as quickly as possible until our enemies say, “No more! For the love of God please no more!”.
My dads B-17 nose art (49th Squadron) was a rabid wolfs head with saliva flowing back into droplets that morphed into bombs. Scary looking to a little kid but even I understood what it meant to him and his crew. I wonder if mikey covers up the words “in god we trust” on all those nasty green pieces of paper that people give him.
Lars coming in here and telling us how we are all un-American for not getting offended by a unit’s nickname in 3…2….1
Nah, not today… he’s mourning the death of that commie loving, stank assed hippie Tom Hayden.
Don’t fear the commie!
DO YOU HAFTA provoke him like that? I’ve been enjoying his absence from here!
All that ass pain over red crosses. I’m shocked that he hasn’t demanded that they be removed from dustoffs and ambulances.
As for the timing of the AF Times publication, the CFC forms are out and he needs to pull in enough this year to cover that ridiculous salary. BTW, according to the CFC catalogue, MRFF keeps 27% of the donations for administration costs.
Who says “charitable organizations” aren’t a great way to screw a living out of donors.
I wonder when the crusade (see what I did there) to eradicate the crosses off of Chaplin’s uniforms begins.
Or from the unit crest of all Army regiments.
Give him time . . . .
Why aren’t the “offended parties” in the “bullying incidents” addressing these problems through their chain of command, EO rep, or other established means? I’m willing to bet that any whiny little snot-nosed special snowflake that goes crying to Mikey is severely deficient as a military member in general.
Assuming they exist…
So Miley the Whiner and Limp-Dick Lars finally found their holy grail: an allegedly-Christian group that wanted to blow something up. I suppose the Law of Averages dictates that the outlier had to pop up eventually.
So a Jew, a Christian, an Atheist walk into a bar….they have a great time and enjoy themselves because that’s what happens when you’re not a fucking idiot…
On the other hand you have this fucking tool….he doesn’t speak for non-believers like me…a red cross and the name Crusaders is no more offensive to me than the neighbor kid asking to shoot hoops on my basket in my driveway….now if someone wants to make it mandatory for me to display a red cross or make it mandatory to let that kid use my hoop we’re going to have a fucking problem…
If you want to believe in a god to make your day better or to keep you from being a dick you should do that. After the first time I tell you I’m not interested in your god you can rest assured I really meant it and know nothing you say will ever change my mind. Then we can move on to other issues and avoid any unpleasantness.
Because at the end of the day, we’re all atheists to some degree. I just believe in one less god than the rest of you.
100% agreement. Again.
“I just believe in one less god than the rest of you”
Pure gold
Ummm the 523d was deactivated years ago…..

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion….”
Not trying to troll, but can someone explain how establishing Christmas as a federal holiday is not considered “respecting an establishment of religion”? Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy the day off as much as the next lazy government employee, but I always wondered how they managed to justify what in my eyes clearly violates the first amendment. Any thoughts?
Sure. There is no law that you have to observe the Christian aspects of Christmas while on your paid Christmas vacation. You can go to church, you can drink pig blood and chant, or you can go out in your yard and light a bunch of crosses on fire. Your choice.
Pig blood? Infidel! In my coven we only serve the blood of goats or cats. The great Baphomet will accept no substitute!
But back on topic, I don’t see how declaring the high holiday of Christianity a national holiday isn’t considered respecting it. I understand that people would be up in arms if they ever decided to abolish it, but that still doesn’t make it right in my book. Just a thought.
Those poor goats. They go from being ISIS sex slaves to being a Pagan sacrifice.
At least they’re not used as curses any more!
Go Cubs Go!
It is more properly called the ‘establishment’ clause in that the federal government is not to “establish” a national religion/church, either by creating one of its own or by banning “established” religions that it disagrees with. Think Church of England. Christmas is recognized by a large number (but not all) of Christian religions and by the Catholic Church. It has long been celebrated by a large number of non-Christians as well in a secular sense – Santa Claus was not mentioned anywhere in the KJV last time I checked). In fact, Christmas was a compromise between the Catholic Church and the pagan religions of Europe many centuries ago and is seen as a pagan holiday to many fundamentalist Christian churches to this day.
It is now as generic (if not more so) than having “In God We Trust” on the coinage and federal reserve notes. Take two weeks off, blow whatever cash Uncle Sam left you at the end of the year and max out those credit cards while you’re at it. Yep, all supported by the New Testament.
Air Force Times (and other Military “Times”) are owned and operated by Gannett (think USA Today and Detroit Free Press). I’m sure they are very PROUD, rather than embarrassed, over this article.
Mikey Weinstein slurps cock and “likes” it.
Don’t suppose he ever actually checked out whether said “Crusaders” group was actually claiming to actually BE Christian? I did a search for this and in not one article were the plotters ever described as anything other than violent anti-Muslims. Or is Mikey worried about the establishment of un-religions now?
At least the VMFA-122 didn’t go back to its original nickname the Candy Stripers.
If its not been officially approved by the Center for Military History as a special designation (there are several Crusaders in the bunch, as well as the Black Knights, Centurions, and several units pledging fealty to the Devil), its just a local nickname and subject to change at the whim of the commander…….no matter how stupid.
My Dad spent his Marine Corps career on the Aviation side of the Corps. When MCAS Beaufort went from being MCAAS to MCAS that coincided with adding the F-8U Crusader to the inventory he was part of the initial Cadre to bring on the F-8 flight simulators. VMFA-122 was the first Marine Squadron to operate F-8s.
Somewhere in a box in the garage is a VMFA 122 patch before they “concerted” to the Crusader patch. I don’t think the PC types would like it better. It features a wolf riding a flying/diving whiskey bottle, with a bullet being fired from the neck of the bottle which doubled as gun barrel, and the wolf is flipping the bird.
I’ll have to go see if I can find it.
that would “converted”
