In July, we busted Jan Spann, a member of the Banning, California School Board, for pretending she was a nurse in Vietnam. For the time period that she claimed to be in Vietnam, Spann was actually in college.
Well, local journalists uncovered an email Spann sent to the school board for an anger issue she had three years ago. Of course, she blamed her PTSD from her fake Vietnam service for the episode to gain sympathy from her peers;
She says that she was left behind with some patients on a hot LZ – I’m sorry, but no one would leave a nurse alone in Indian country.
Ms Spann is turning into one of the worst shitbag phonies we’ve ever had.

Well, if you mistakenly enter the wrong drinking establishment in Hillcrest, your best bet for bleaching your brain with scantily-clad (or less) females is Clairmont Mesa Boulevard, especially near the intersection with Convoy Road. Another reason there were no nurses left behind in Indian country is because there were no female Army nurses ever outside the wire in any combat zone, period, let alone riding in a dustoff chopper on a medevac mission. Of the seven females who died in RVN, none of them were killed by the enemy while participating in a combat operation or a medevac dustoff mission.

8 nurses died in Nam: 7 Army and 1 Air Force Flight Nurse. One died of a random rocket attack on her hospital ward (Sharon Lane, 1969). The rest died of other causes.
And while it’s true that no women were “outside the wire”, a few were in some fairly deep shit during Tet 68 and Tet 69.
And in case you didn’t know, there were no 19 year old nurses (who had to be Nursing School Grads, 22-23 years old). Women had to be a minimum age of 20 and minimum rank of Corporal. The one exception, a 19 year old PFC, was a Clerk-Typist WAC at the logistics base at Long Binh.

Heard many a tale from most of the pilots I flew with that drove Dustoff birds in “Nam ( both Warrant and commissioned MSC guys), and not one that I remember accounted that they flew with nurses on missions. I’m not saying it never happened…I’m just sayin’
Trust me, it didn’t happen. First, female nurses did not desire to go into bad guy country. In my experience, they also did not want to have anything to do with grunts, unless they were hospital patients. I had one at the 91st Evac hospital “O” club tell me that they (nurses) didn’t want to get to know guys that might end up in their wards with terrible wounds. Anyway, that was her excuse for why she didn’t want to have anything to do with me. She took one look at my pin on brass and jungle boots and knew I was a line doggie and not a REMF.

I have a theory that Janis Spann’s claims aren’t made from whole cloth. Somewhere in the past is a link to Vietnam and nurses that she has managed to embellish into a false back story.
One possibility is that Spann was apparently a medical microbiology student at Cal State Long Beach during the ’68-’71 time frame. It so happens that Long Beach State is about two miles away from what was then the Naval Regional Medical Center, Long Beach which was opened in ’67 and closed in ’94. Its former site is now the Long Beach Town Center mall.
Connect the dots. A med micro-bio student who might have wanted part-time work and/or training is enrolled near a new major med center that “served as a primary debarkation point for personnel returning to the continental United States via air medical evacuation.” During a war.

I’ll cheerfully admit that what I’m pointing out is mainly a matter of speculation to explain the origin of Spann’s bullshit story. Somehow, I have a hard time believing the woman woke up one morning and out of the clear blue said, “You know what? Today I’m going to be an ex-ninja-nurse-dustoff-combat-med-mama.” Or whatever.
I also think it’s fair to say we’ve seen a lot of people slouch through the annals of TAH who had a kernel of truth going, and decided to make it a false heroic epic.
It’s also at least plausible that Spann might not have needed a degree to work in the Naval Med Center at the time. She might have been something like an assistant lab tech running an autoclave, or a candy striper, or working in the snackbar.
I don’t know that you’re wrong….but I believe there are numerous possibilities which including many factors such as constructing the persona based on being a female in such a time when female roles were limited
Another possibility for the origins of Spann’s phony bullshit is that she is fixated with the experiences of then-MAJ Rhonda Cornum during the Gulf War; she was the combat surgeon who went behind enemy lines to conduct a SAR and whose helo was shot down and she was taken POW by the Iraqis. It may be that Spann here has taken this story to heart and has transferred Cornum’s heroism and ordeal into Spann’s own fairytale heroic bullshit. It’s as plausible as anything else mentioned here…
I would consider that a VERY likely possibility.
