  • Henry Gates vs. common decency

    I actually saw the story about Skip Gates and his run in with Cambridge cops the day after it happened on July 16th in the corner of some small print headlines in the Washington Post, I think. I decided at the time that it wasn’t important enough for me to address. It was a dog-bites-man story. Black man gets arrested by a cop and cries “I din’t do nuthin’”. I see it every Saturday night on ‘Cops’.

    I get called a ‘racist’ at least once a week here in DC for doing abominable things like walking down the right side of the sidewalk, or walking up the escalator at the subway station. So I’m pretty used to it.

    The President, unsurprisingly, calls the cops stupid for arresting a 58-year-old man who won’t act his age. More than a week after the arrest. Not examining the facts – just based purely on the superficial appearance of the incident. Black man arrested by white cop – cops stupid.

    So the details get published on the front page of every paper, white cop taught other cops how to avoid racial profile. Black cop on the scene concurs with white cop. The arrest report is released on Smoking Gun. Ooops.

    Press Secretary Gibbs says the media is prolonging the issue. Obama can’t quite bring himself to apologize to the Cambridge cop. Obama says Sergeant Crowley is an outstanding officer and a good man.

    Darleen at Protein Wisdom writes that Gates is calling Sgt. Crowley a liar on Friday afternoon. And today, the Washington Post says that gates claims it’s time to move on;

    It was a marked change in tone for Gates, who in the days following his arrest gathered up his legal team and said he was contemplating a lawsuit. He even vowed to make a documentary on his arrest to tie into a larger project about racial profiling.

    In an e-mail to the Boston Globe late Friday, he said: “It is time for all of us to move on, and to assess what we can learn from this experience.”

    Allahpundit writes that Gates even offered to have a beer with the police sergeant.

    Yeah, Gates drove this whole incident from a tiny article in a dark corner of the Washington Post to a Presidential press conference. And now it’s time to move on? Probably because Gates looks like a race-baiting, pimping jerk the more information comes out.

    I even watched Juan Williams criticize Gates on Fox News Sunday today. You know you’re wrong when Juan Williams goes after you and you’re black. The Washington Times reports;

    After accepting the invitation [to the White House], the professor told the Boston Globe:

    “My entire academic career had been based on improving race relations, not exacerbating them. I am hopeful that my experience will lead to greater sensitivity to issues of racial profiling in the criminal justice system. If so, then this will be a blessing for our society. It is time for all of us to move on, and to assess what we can learn from this experience.”

    Yeah, talking about a cop’s mother is a well-known and accepted way to improve race-relations.

  • Abortionist killed, suspect known but to Sullivan

    You’ve probably already heard that an abortionist was murdered in his church this morning in Wichita, KA. Before the suspect in the shooting was even caught, Andrew Sullivan was already accusing the Right and Bill O’Reilly of complicity in the murder.

    See the last line at the bottom of that screen capture? “Christianist terrorism is no more defensible than Islamist terrorism.” Who the hell said it wasn’t?

    See, I don’t wade into the abortion discussion often because of the irrational conversations that it spawns. Abortion is wrong, and you know what – everyone on the planet knows it’s wrong, regardless of their religious beliefs or the lack thereof. That’s why the pro-abortion side gets so irrational – they know there’s no real defense for killing unborn babies. But I also oppose the death penalty – I don’t believe in government sponsored killing and abortion has become government-sponsored killing.

    Because I oppose the death penalty, it follows that I don’t support the murder of abortionist Dr Tiller, either. He was engaged in a legal practice, no matter how much I don’t approve of what he was doing, it’s not up to me or anyone else to pass judgment on him and take the life he was given by his Creator (he was in a church when he was murdered after all).

    Sullivan calls it terrorism, which is a stretch to begin with, but to blame Bill O’Reilly (who also opposes the death penalty, I might add) and the Right is borderline insanity. I’ve never heard a rational Conservative that wanted anyone dead because of their legal occupation.

    Notice the Sullivan post was written before we even know who or why the murderer did what he or she (yes, at this point we don’t even know the sex of the accused) did. Yet, the same people who cautioned us about jumping to conclusions about the motivations of the 9-11 perpetrators are jumping to conclusions left and right. The same people who call rioters in Europe “Asian youths” have already decided why Tiller was killed and who is responsible – the folks who don’t agree with them. All because of the guilt they feel for supporting the unsupportable.

    Thanks to Gateway Pundit and American Power for the links.

  • Carrie Prejean is still Miss CA

    As you can imagine, I’ve been saving that picture for a long time waiting for the appropriate post. Donald Trump just announced that Ms. Prejean will be allowed to remain Miss California even though she let some side-boob pictures be taken of her at 17. I watched way too much of the press conference which pretty much consisted of Trump saying “she’s a beautiful woman” about 70 times.

    The only reason I like her (aside from the glaringly obvious) is because the vitriol she faces from the sexual Nazis is so intense and she remains strong. The folks who want us to stay out of their bedrooms (believe me, I don’t want to know what goes on in your bedroom) want to change what we’re allowed to say in public.

    But, I did find a reasonable response to Ms. Prejean from a member of the gay community at GayPatriot, if you’re interested in a rational response. If more gays were like GayPatriot, they’d probably have a better shot at all of the goodies they want.

  • Vouchers in DC

    You’ve probably heard that one of the first things Democrats did to the District of Columbia was end vouchers for students to escape the corruption-, crime-, and drug-ridden inner city schools and actually get a shot at a decent education. Two months ago, the Washington Times wrote about the decision;

    Democrats such as Sen. Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, as well as teachers’ unions, voiced concern that the vouchers take federal funds from the public schools.

    Mr. Durbin said in response to Mr. Ensign on Tuesday that the General Accountability Office looked at the voucher schools and found some “world class” schools as well as some below average schools, explaining his reasoning for examining the program further before reauthorization.

    But this last week, President Obama gave an option to inner city parents complete with government funding (again the Washington Times);

    President Obama called for overturning a decade-old ban on publicly funded abortions in the District as part of his budget proposal Thursday, but did not overturn the national ban on federal funding, thus angering advocacy groups on both sides of the volatile issue.

    Under his proposal, the District for the first time in more than a decade would be allowed to pay for abortions with the money it raises from its own taxpayers.

    So, if DC’s prospective parents are worried about the education their unborn children will get in the District, they can always end their unborn children’s lives with tax payer funds. It all kind of evens out doesn’t it?

    Funny how there’s always money for the irresponsible to continue making bad choices, but there’s never money for those who want better choices.

  • Yeah? So teach already.

    In this morning’s Washington Post is an opinion piece by Ting-Yi Oei, the assistant principal of “Freedom School” in Loudon County, Virginia entitled My Students. My Cellphone. My Ordeal. about his “ordeal” of being busted for child pornography.

    A summary of his story goes like this; He decided to investigate the “sexting” phenomenon in his school, found a student with a picture on his phone, had the student forward the picture to the assistant principal’s phone. A few days later, the student was suspended for an unrelated offense, the student told his parents about the picture, the assistant principal was arrested and later cleared of charges for having child pornography on his phone.

    The lesson the assistant principal would like us to take away from his story; teachers have a hard job and they get punished for things they didn’t do – and, oh, Fox News is evil.

    The lesson I’d like teachers to take away from the story; Stop being social engineers and teach. If the assistant principal had just handed the student and his phone over to the police (who I’ve heard are very good at conducting criminal investigations) instead of trying to act like Columbo, he’d still be ensconced in his plush office wondering what the lunchroom is serving today and planning his paid three month vacation this summer.

    Our children are idiots and it’s because teachers have it in their pointy heads that somehow it’s not their fault. In fact it’s everyone’s fault EXCEPT teachers. But teachers and schools are more worried about social fads and creating a “conducive environment for social interaction” instead of teaching skills students need to be productive members of the community.

    Teachers aren’t the police, they aren’t social workers, they aren’t substitute parents – they’re teachers, so they should try their hand at teaching and leave the rest of their imagined job descriptors to the experts.

  • Another non-issue facing the military…again

    When the gay community started poking their nose into the military’s traditions and regulations again, I almost expected this snakes nest to spill forth once again. It seems that Sikhs are trying to keep their turbans, long hair and beards. I remember when the Army last took up the issue during the years that we faced the Soviets over the Iron Curtain – the Army announced that Sikhs could serve but they’d have to give up their religious accouterments. Many left the service when their time was up.

    Now the Stars and Stripes reports that the battle has begun again;

    On Tuesday, the Sikh Coalition filed a formal complaint with the inspectors general of the Army and the Department of Defense on behalf of Kalsi and 2nd Lt. Tejdeep Singh Rattan, a Reservist since 2006. The group was formed after two Sikhs were attacked in Queens, N.Y., on the night of 9/11 as reprisals for the attack.

    For Kalsi, whose family came to the U.S. in 1978, the issue is frustrating and confusing. He is the fourth generation to serve in allied militaries. His father and grandfather were both Indian Air Force veterans. His great-grandfather served in the British army.

    “I can’t understand why my Army would keep me from serving,” Kalsi said.

    Well, Kalsi, that’s because you haven’t been listening to LTC Nathan Banks (TSO and I giggle like school girls every time LTC Banks makes a public pronouncement);

    “The Army places a high value on the rights of soldiers to observe their respective religious faiths; however, the Army does not accommodate the exceptions for personal grooming standards for religious reasons,” said Army spokesman Lt. Col. Nathan Banks.

    The restriction forces soldiers to meet “health, safety and mission requirements,” Banks said, and facial hair prevents an airtight seal on gas masks.

    See, that “airtight seal” line referring to protective masks, Kalsi? That’s key in this part of the discussion;

    But lawyers representing the soldiers say the policy poses a “burden on their exercise of religion” under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993….

    Not like inhaling some nice blister agent through the unsealed mask will burden their exercise of religion, pal. Sure it hasn’t happened in 90 years or so, but there’s always the first time. And it only takes that one time.

    Now, I mentioned gays in the first line and I know someone out there is panting just waiting for me to finish this so they can jump on me for comparing religious beliefs to sexual behavior. I’ll explain myself – both groups claim that they want to serve, but only under their conditions and any concessions to the military are out of the question. The military has made it possible for both groups to serve if they give up something but they’re unwilling to concede any thing. So it just becomes an employment opportunity for lawyers.

    I’m not demeaning Sikhs I’m just pointing out that every one sacrifices something to be in the military, some more than others. If it’s so damn important for you to serve your country, make the common sense choice – and stop encouraging law schools to spit out cutthroat predators.

    Yeah, I know…I suck.

  • Stupid hippie tricks

    A stupid Colorado mother of three tried to put the above on her license plate declaring her love for tofu.

    Kelley Coffman-Lee, a mother of three, said she believes the Department of Revenue missed the intended healthy message, “I-LV-TOFU,” and misread it as the far steamier “I-LV-TO-F-U.”

    “I love tofu; it doesn’t mean anything bad,” Coffman-Lee told 7NEWS Tuesday.

    Yeah, I love it if my mom was driving around with that plate. Even if she only did mean tofu, it’s still a stupid idea.

    “I’m very expressive, I’m anti-fur, anti-rodeo, anti-circus when they come to Denver and I thought here’s a chance to be positive and say I love something,” Coffman-Lee said.

    Yeah, that explains why hippies are so stupid – they’re expressive over things that don’t really matter. My car would probably be burned if I put my eating habits on the license plate. This is from another article from the local Fox affiliate;

    Coffman-Lee is amused, but disappointed. “There are a lot of dirty-minded people out there,” she said.

    Oh, sure…blame TAH’s readership.

    I couldn’t find a picture of Coffman, so this one will have to suffice in the interim;
