    Summer Storm

Lightning—or the “dragon of thunder,” as Your Shot photographer Makoto Igari refers to it—crashes to the sea in a summer storm off the coast of Ibaraki, Japan, located to the northeast of Tokyo. Silhouetted against the storm is a torii gate, a Japanese gateway typically constructed at the entrance to a temple; this one is outside the Oarai Isosaki Shrine.

    A Road in the Crack

Iceland’s Route 1, better known as Ring Road, takes drivers through the country’s diverse, stunning landscapes. In this aerial image captured by Your Shot photographer Alex Visbal, a car makes its way through a stretch of the road that winds through a lava field in Reykjahlíð, located in the northeastern part of the country. Even amid the gray of the hardened lava, colorful plants sprout up to “spice the landscape,” says Visbal.

    Above the fray

    Above the Fray

Iranian soldiers scamper along high ropes in a military training exercise “like sparrows” in this image by Your Shot photographer Mohamad Ali Najib, backed by the dome of traditional Muslim architecture. While these troops certainly appear to know what they’re doing, they are actually students at an Iranian officer training school for the Islamic Republic of Iran Army.

I know it’s early, but AW1Ed asked for it and since my son is home for the first Thanksgiving in 17 years, I have to agree.

Our best wishes for the holidays to all.

    Whale huddle

    Bring It In

In the Azores, an archipelago approximately 900 miles off the coast of Portugal, a group of sperm whales huddles beneath the surface. While adult males are solitary creatures when not breeding, females and juveniles assemble in pods of 10 to 20 members, often vocalizing and touching each other when socializing, as seen here. The largest toothed predator in the world, sperm whales are a common sight in the Azores, where they congregate year-round.

    Semper Eye

Scott Casimiro, a former United States Marine Corps sergeant, lost an eye while overseas. Instead of the standard replacement, his false eye is emblazoned with the gold emblem of the Marine Corps. Here, he participates in the Marine Corps Ultimate Challenge Mud Run in Swansea, South Carolina. Photographer Jodi Martinez is herself a member of the U.S. Air Force as part of the Combat Camera unit, which documents overseas exercises and humanitarian efforts.

    DefendUSA

The sad news comes to us that Martin Admundson has passed. He is the husband of our own DefendUSA, an Army veteran and a long-time participant on this forum (that’s her, in the middle, in the picture above from our “Members’ Gallery”). I met Martin, Denise and their kids years ago at one of the early Tea Party rallies in DC. Martin’s passing was completely unexpected. Someone has set up a GoFundMe account for his family, in the event that you’re led in that direction.
