  • Gun legislation in WV

    Folks tell me that West Virginia is culturally backwards, but ya know, looking at what they call “forward” these days, is that a bad thing? Here’s some of the legislation pending in the West Virginia legislature. If guns are “your issue” and you’re looking for a friendlier place;

    Last Friday, the House of Delegates voted unanimously to pass House Bill 2471. HB 2471, sponsored by House Speaker Rick Thompson (D-19), seeks to prohibit restrictions on the lawful possession, use, carrying, transfer, transportation, storage or display of a firearm or ammunition during any declared state of emergency. HB 2471 has been sent to the state Senate where it was assigned to the Senate Government Organization Committee. Senate Bill 330, sponsored by Senate Majority Leader John Unger (D-16), is the Senate companion bill.

    A number of other NRA-backed bills have been introduced and are on the move this session. Your NRA is tirelessly working through the legislative process with solidly pro-gun legislators to protect your Second Amendment rights in Charleston:

    House Bill 2135, sponsored by Delegate Gary Howell (R-56), would allow the holder of a valid Concealed Pistol/Revolver Permit to keep a loaded firearm locked in their vehicle on State Capitol Complex grounds.

    House Bill 2294, sponsored by Delegate Ryan Ferns (D-3), would allow the lawful transport and storage of a firearm in a personal vehicle while lawfully accessing public areas.

    House Bill 2431, sponsored by Delegate Rupie Phillips (D-24), would amend the application process for a Concealed Pistol/Revolver Permit, making West Virginia permit holders eligible for an exemption from the national background check when purchasing a firearm.

    House Bill 2572, sponsored by Delegate John Overington (R-62), would clarify when and where a person can carry a concealed firearm while afield.

    House Bill 2602, sponsored by House Majority Leader Brent Boggs (D-34), would increase the number of states that recognize a West Virginia Concealed Pistol/Revolver Permit and allows residents of another state, who hold a valid out-of-state permit or license, to carry in West Virginia. Senate Bill 369, sponsored by Senate Majority Leader John Unger (D-16), is the Senate companion to HB 2602.

    House Bill 2604, sponsored by Delegate Daniel Poling (D-10), would exempt honorably discharged veterans of the United States military from having to pay the fees and costs associated with a Concealed Pistol/Revolver Permit.

    House Bill 2760, sponsored by Delegate Rupie Phillips (D-24), would remove existing “grandfather” clauses in certain localities across the state to make a uniform set of firearms laws statewide. This would eliminate provisions that create confusion for law-abiding citizens such as the three day waiting period for a handgun in Charleston.

    In a world that has turned bat-shit crazy against gun owners, this is indeed refreshing.

    If I was a Remington or a Kimber, or a Magpul, I’d be looking for a reliable place to put down roots. A place like West Virginia. Hint. Hint. Hint.

  • ABC News hides Michelle’s ignorance “to save time”

    You probably heard that Michelle Obama told ABC News that teenager Hadiya Pendleton was gunned down in Chicago by an automatic weapon a few weeks ago. ABC News knew that was inaccurate and edited out the line to camouflage the First Lady’s blatant ignorance of gun functions – the Chicago police admit that the girl was probably shot with a semi-automatic handgun.

    Well, according to our buddy, Emily Miller at the Washington Times, ABC News is claiming that they edited the line out for brevity’s sake;

    A spokesman for ABC News, Heather Riley, emailed me that, “The full story was posted to our website in advance of the interview being broadcast. The edits made to Robin’s interview with the First Lady were made solely for time.”

    I read the missing words out loud, and it took me seven seconds.

    The Chicago police suspect that the shooter in the teen’s death was a gang member and it’s unlikely that a scum bag like that couldn’t afford the tens of thousands of dollars and layers of bureaucracy required to get an automatic weapon.

    But, that’s what the Obama Administration and ABC News gets for dragging someone into the “national discussion” on firearms control who has no business discussing a subject they don’t understand. Mrs. Obama should stick to talking about her bangs and her $9000 dress at the Oscars. Maybe get me a sandwich, too.

  • Note to Bite Me; Man fires shotgun to scare off burglars, arrested

    Someone send this article to Joe Biden, or Jill Biden. 22-year-old Trevor Lamont Snowden told police that when he went in his bedroom the other night, he encountered two burglars entering his window. they told to get out of the bedroom and to close the door;

    Thinking the suspects were going to rob him, he moved into the hallway and retrieved a shotgun.

    Moyers said Snowden fired through his bedroom door, then opened the door and fired several more rounds toward the window. Any suspects fled the area and could not be located by officers.

    Snowden was then charged with “reckless handling of a firearm” and released. So, I guess the police in Virginia Beach aren’t enamored with the Vice President’s advice that we should all go out on our balconies and fire indiscriminately into the air to scare off any lurking burglars.

  • Nathan Haddad: the great magazine war in New York

    Earlier this month, I wrote about Nathan Haddad, the 32-year-old who was arrested in New York State for having in his possession five 30-round AR-style magazines. Many of you have sent links to articles about the arrest and I’ve tried to answer them all. But the links keep coming. So, here let me lay out the story for you and why I’m not going to knot my panties over this arrest;

    From what I understand about the case, Haddad was arrested in an empty parking lot where he was waiting for a prospective purchaser of the magazines – magazines which have been illegal to possess since 1994 when (Republican) Governor George Pataki (Democrat) Governor Mario Cuomo signed New York’s scary-looking gun ban into law. Haddad’s brother, Michael claims that the magazines were grandfathered, that would make them 18 years old, and how Nathan would know they were grandfathered is curious – the magazines had federal stock numbers on them, so they were originally government property – Nathan was 14-years-old when the ban took effect, so obviously he wasn’t in possession of them in 1994.

    New York law forbids selling the magazines even if they’re grandfathered, so just being in the parking lot with the intent of transferring them to someone else was prohibited.

    Now, let me be clear, I think the scary-weapons and the scarier magazines ban is completely silly. I’ve been stocking up on the scary magazines since the Newtown thing occurred. But, I don’t live in New York State – and it’s gun laws are one of the reasons I left the state fourteen years ago. While I agree that David Gregory, the NBC news guy who waved a thirty-round magazine on his TV show in a jurisdiction where the magazine was illegal to own, should have been arrested, I must also agree that Haddad should be arrested.

    If it turns out that my research is correct that he was selling government property to a private purchaser in contradiction to current New York State laws, Haddad will get what he deserves. This isn’t the Rosa Parks case that the pro-gun people have been hoping for – there are no Rosa Parks in the gun debate. If we’re willing to violate the gun laws in effect in the various states, we must be willing to pay the price. If NYS wants to overturn those scary-gun laws that have been foisted uon them, they should do it in the courts and the legislature, not in dark, empty parking lots.

  • Sunday morning feel good story

    In Hickory, NC, early Saturday morning, Paul Ohle was in a fight for his life when another man kicked in his front door. Ohle reached for his phone to call police, but the man knocked it from his hands. Next, Ohle reached for his shotgun, but the intruder wrenched it from his hands and began beating him with the long gun. Ohle had a revolver in his bedroom and finally got to it and ventilated the burglar;

    Ohle said he finally broke free and ran to his bedroom, where he grabbed a revolver and shot the man to death.

    “I hate I had to do it,” he said, “but I shot him.”

    Hickory Police have not released the alleged intruder’s name, saying they haven’t notified his family yet. They haven’t said whether charges could be filed in the case.

    Ohle said police took him to the hospital, and also searched his home and took his gun and cell phone as evidence.

    Neighbor Reggie Moore saw police at Ohle’s house, and heard what happened.

    “I hate it for the young man’s family,” he said, “but when you do something like that, you get what’s coming to you.”

  • Saturday feel good story

    In Houston, a family was baking a cake when a knock at the door interrupted them and three men forced their way into the family’s home, pushing the father to the floor and reaching for his wife. The 21-year-old son went to his father’s bedroom and came out blazing with his .22 caliber rifle reports KHOU;

    “I just hear a couple of times; boom, boom, boom. One young life is lost,” the dad said.

    Deputies responding to the call spotted a vehicle carrying two men who matched the suspects’ descriptions and pulled it over. The men were taken into custody for questioning.

    Deputies said they do not know why the suspects targeted this home.

    And Houston is a little bit safer tonight.

  • Feel good Thursday

    UpNorth sends us two links to make you make you feel good on this cold-ass day. The first from Lansing, MI in which a woman defends her family from a misled youth;

    It happened around midnight when an Ingham County woman opened fire on an intruder at her home on the 4200 block of West Holt Road, a few blocks from Cedar Street in Holt.

    The suspect was male and was shot multiple times. He had injuries to his stomach as well as his hands.

    Inside the home were a woman, man, and four children. At this time officials tell us that no one else in the home was hurt.

    In the second, an elderly Dallas man permanently ventilates an intruder and then has to defend himself again from the deceased man’s family;

    The homeowner, a repeat burglary victim, found 33-year-old Deyfon Pipkins attempting to climb in the house through the window and fired at least one shot at the criminal, hitting his target.

    Dallas police Sgt. Calvin Johnson told KDFW-TV that the homeowner is covered by the so-called “Castle Doctrine,” which provides legal protection to gun owners in Texas and other states who are forced to use deadly force against a home intruder.

    “It means they don’t actually have to retreat once someone comes in their home,” Johnson said. “You have the option of using deadly force if you believe your life is in danger.

    Now, the last chapter of the 18-page criminal history of Deyfon Pipkins has been written thanks to a citzen who had been burglarized one too many times. Is my TV worth your life?

  • NRA: Stand and Fight; We are America

    The folks at the NRA sent us their latest video in the Stand and Fight series; “We are America”. I think this is the best of their series so far. I’m glad to see them put my membership dues to good use;

    I know it’s nothing that hasn’t been said here on TAH by you or me, but pass the video around to your friends.
