Antarctic Sea Ice Coverage – Yet Another Record
Yeah, it’s late winter in the southern hemisphere. But this is IMO noteworthy nonetheless.
Recent satellite photos show that sea ice coverage near Antarctica has reached the greatest extent ever measured. The coverage area is now roughly 2x the size of Antarctica itself, and about 3x the size of Australia. (Graphic of sea ice coverage here.)
So, to what do those “esteemed, learned” climatologists attribute this condition? Well, I’m glad you asked.
They say it’s due to warmer air temperatures and ozone depletion. In other words, they’re saying global warming is causing more Antarctic sea ice.
Sheesh. IMO these guys are starting to rival ol’ “Baghdad Bob” when it comes to defending the absurd.
Of course, this is coming from the same crowd in Australia that recently got caught “adjusting” measured data in order to make it seem that global warming is occurring when the actual measured data says otherwise. So, for my money, caveat emptor is very much apropos regarding buying their claims about what’s causing the increase in sea ice.

Pyrrhus Would Understand
Remember that “big victory” we heard about recently for the state of Nevada? You know, the one where Tesla Motors announced that they would build their huge, $5 billion, high-tech battery factory in Nevada vice California, Arizona, Texas, or New Mexico?
Well, that victory apparently came with a price: somewhere between $2 billion and $3 billion in tax incentives from Nevada. That works out to somewhere between 50 and 60 percent of the cost of building the Tesla-owned facility.
From Tesla’s latest regulatory filings:
The total capital expenditures associated with the gigafactory through 2020 are expected to be $4-5 billion (sic), of which approximately $2 billion is expected to come from Tesla.
And where will the rest of the money to build for the factory come from? Nevada taxpayers will be on the hook for it. That’s kinda how tax incentives work.
There are a few other things about the deal that would bother me if I were a Nevada resident, too. Like the fact that Tesla currently has roughly $2.6 billion in cash – and around $4 billion in liabilities.
There’s also this:
“Tesla has also disclosed its overhead costs are now rising 20% on a year-over-year basis, and research and development expenses are increasing 30%.”
Finally, Tesla’s current business plans project that they’ll be making (and, presumably, selling) 500,000 electric vehicles annually by 2020. Tesla also expects their new battery factory to reduce costs of battery pack production vis-à-vis current sources by more than 30% per-killowatt-hour.
Somehow, I just don’t see both of those happening.
Hey, I hope this works out for the good people of Nevada. But I can’t help thinking – based on what we’ve seen from other similar “green energy”
boondogglesefforts going belly-up over the past few years – is that there’s a better-than-even chance they’ll end up quoting Pyrrus of Epirus concerning the Battle of Asculum:“One more such victory, and we shall be undone.”

More “Global Warming” Data and Analysis
Well, we have new data and analysis regarding that much-ballyhooed “global warming” we keep hearing about.
Briton Christopher Monkton has done a least-squares regression on Remote Sensing Systems’ satellite-based monthly global mean lower-troposphere temperature data. This dataset goes back 17 years and 11 months – to October 1996 – or almost two decades.
Wanna take a guess at how much global warming he found when the trendline of that dataset was plotted using least squares regression?
Let’s put that in perspective. What this means is that the youngsters who graduated from high school this year have not seen any measurable global warming during their lifetime.
Monkton’s not alone in making this assertion. Professor Ross McKitrick, Universtiy of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, has conducted a similar study using somewhat different methodology. McKitrick’s conclusion? There has been no appreciable global warming since 1995 – or for a period of approximately 19 years.
Global warming may be occurring. Or it may not. We simply don’t know at this point. If it’s occurring at all – which seems not to be the case, based on the last 18 or 19 years of measured, accurate data – we do not know why with any certainty. We just don’t understand the Earth’s climate well enough at present to make any meaningful predictions whatsoever.
But one thing is certain: presenting “global warming” as “settled science” is, to be blunt, absolute bullsh!t. The data for the past nearly two decades – which just happens to be the best and most accurate data available – simply doesn’t seem to support that theory.

More About That Menace, “Global Warming”
Here’s a few new interesting bits regarding that threat to the planet, “global warming” – courtesy of the folks at whatsupwiththat.com:
- US: Record Lows Outnumber Record Highs Almost 3:1 Over Last 30 Days. FWIW: July and August are typically the Northern Hemisphere’s hottest months. And, for some reason, the US National Climate Data Center has stopped making it easy to compare the two. I guess there’s an innocent explanation for that, though.
- Austrailian Metrology Office Accused of “Diddling Data”. That can’t be so, though. Because we all know that government offices, academics, and commercial firms with a financial and professional stake in a given outcome would simply never, ever do something like that!
- And It Looks Like the US Historical Climatology Network Could Be Doing the Same. Gee, what a coincidence. Now, why would they ever think of doing something like that?
- Antarctic Sea Ice Cover Above 30-Year Average – for Last 1,000 Days Straight. Hmmm. Yeah, global warming must be causing that, too.
- Small, New Glaciers Discovered In . . . Scotland. I guess we now know where those “disappearing” Himalayan glaciers are going.
Yeah, that “global warming” is truly a menace to society – and humanity. We gotta do something – right away! OMG, the sky’s about to fall!! Aieeeeee!!!!!
(I do hope that last paragraph’s sarcasm was obvious.)
Sheesh. What we need do is admit that mankind really doesn’t yet really understand Earth’s climate anywhere near as well as our “climate warming” propagandists proponents claim. And we also need to admit we really don’t know if the Earth’s climate is staying about the same, warming, or cooling – and if it’s changing, what’s causing the change.

Why So Many “Global Warming Skeptics?
Well, according to one liberal billionaire – a hedge fund manager – it’s because 99.5% of all Americans are “not super sophisticated”. Presumably that’s his polite way of saying it’s because we “just don’t know any better”.
It’ can’t possibly be because recent climate data doesn’t support the thesis; that the theory is completely the opposite of what was accepted climate science 40 years ago; that current climatologists never have and still cannot adequately explain the Medieval Warm period and the “little Ice Age”; that there appears to have quite possibly been widespread tampering with “correction” to actual raw data to support a man-made global warming hypothesis; the fact that the results have been overly sensationalized, possibly deliberately (Himalayan glaciers, anyone?); and the fact that for years “global warming” research was a key to getting research dollars? Or maybe that a sizeable minority of actual, you know, scientists think the thesis is currently unproven and may well be false?
No, none of those could possibly be among the reasons people might doubt that global warming propaganda thesis. It must be because those who doubt the global warming propaganda thesis are “not super sophisticated”.
Yo, fella: last time I checked, someone who was “sophisticated” typically was willing to examine facts and think for themselves. They didn’t usually simply accept and parrot whatever trendy BS, prevailing opinion, or half-baked theory was tossed their way for consumption. Sounds to me like you’re the one simply following the crowd here – “bubba”.
Now, why don’t you just run along get stick to making money from speculative and often-risky investments. Regarding that, you might actually know what you’re talking about.
Sheesh. Liberal hypocrisy never ceases to amaze.

I’ll Just Leave This Here
A brief follow-up to my article from yesterday concerning this summer’s cooler than normal weather.
Snow set to blast Scotland as forecasters
warn of ‘coldest August spell in a century‘Snow may or may not occur; if it does, will likely be limited to elevations above 1000m (3280ft). Daily highs may rival the lowest August temps since 1919 (8.9C, or 48F).
Must be that global warming at work.

Meanwhile, About That “Global Warming” . . . .
A few new articles from the past couple of days (hat tip to Drudge for these links):
- Unusually cool summer leads to fall colors . . . in mid-August.
- 90F days in DC? Unusually few this year – 40% fewer than average.
- West Virginia sees record low temps in mid-August.
It’s not just this month, either. In July, we saw record lows in the central Midwest, and in the deep South as well. In general, July and August are the two hottest months of the year for most of the US.
It’s not just the US, either. Australia saw record lows back in April. And it saw the same again in mid-July, too.
Must be because of that global warming all those scientists keep telling us about. And scientists are never wrong, right?
Yeah, right. Forty years ago, “the coming ice age” was the great climate fear. Then runaway “global warming”. Today, that’s morphed into “global climate change” – but some scientists still insist that man is causing the planet to warm uncontrollably.
Give me a break, folks. The earth’s climate has always been changing, irregularly and due to things we simply do not yet understand, since long before man arrived. It will continue to do so long after man has departed the planet.
Just man up and admit you don’t really know what’s going on. Hell, if you pitch that correctly you’ll probably still get plenty of $$$ to study the matter.
