  • Well, Well, Well – What Have We Here?

No, I didn’t write what follows.  But I rather wish I had.  I can’t find a damn thing here I disagree with, and it sums up the issue both succinctly and well.

I am skeptical humans are the main cause of climate change and that it will be catastrophic in the near future. There is no scientific proof of this hypothesis, yet we are told “the debate is over” and “the science is settled.”

My skepticism begins with the believers’ certainty they can predict the global climate with a computer model. The entire basis for the doomsday climate change scenario is the hypothesis increased atmospheric carbon dioxide due to fossil fuel emissions will heat the Earth to unlivable temperatures.

In fact, the Earth has been warming very gradually for 300 years, since the Little Ice Age ended, long before heavy use of fossil fuels. Prior to the Little Ice Age, during the Medieval Warm Period, Vikings colonized Greenland and Newfoundland, when it was warmer there than today. And during Roman times, it was warmer, long before fossil fuels revolutionized civilization.

Yes, the above was indeed written by a self-professed “climate change skeptic.”  However, you might find the identity of that self professed “climate change skeptic” a bit surprising.

It was written by a guy named Dr. Patrick Moore.

Yes, that Dr. Patrick Moore.  The same guy who co-founded Greenpeace and who served as its General Director for seven years.  The man just might know a thing or two about science – including the Earth’s environment and how it functions.

I can’t say I see eye-to-eye with Dr. Moore on all issues.  But I have to say that I do agree with him here.  And I will also say this about the man:  he does seem to have the guts to speak the truth as he sees it when doing so is unpopular.

The quote above is from this article by Dr. Moore.  It’s not very long, and is IMO very much worth the time to read.  It seems I’m not the only one who thinks we ought to “follow the money”.

I’m guessing this ought to go over well among our “good friends” in the       grubbing for grants      “politically correct conclusions-here”       modern-day Luddite       global warming “true believer” community.  For that crowd it’s really gotta sting when one of the co-founders of Greenpeace tells them they’re full of it and are talking out of their 4th point of contact.

Hell, maybe it will even make a few of their pointy little PC heads explode – figuratively speaking, of course.  IMO that would be a good thing.  (smile)

  • A Cooling “Blast from the Past”

In keeping with the spring      thaw     snowstorm hitting the NE USA, I thought I’d provide this link.  It’s to an article from Harper’s Magazine – in September, 1958.

    The Coming Ice Age

The thesis then was that continued global warming would melt the Arctic ice cap.  That would cause a rise in global sea levels – and more precipitation, including more snow.

However, unlike modern-day      Cassandras       Chicken Littles       prophets of doom      climate warming “true believers”, the theory then was that this ongoing global warming would trigger another ice age.

    Seriously.

You see, some of that increasing amount of the snow would never melt during the summer.  That non-melting snow would start to form permanent snow cover, then glaciers.  Those glaciers would grow, then merge.  Winds from the north would begin to cool the weather farther and farther south.  Ice sheets would form, and begin to creep south.  In fact, ice sheets up to two miles thick would cover the US and Europe in “several thousand years!”

Of course, they were also predicting in 1958 that the Arctic Ocean could be ice-free by 1978, too.  They seem to have been a bit off about that, too.  (smile)

Today, the Arctic is still supposedly melting.  But now that’s allegedly evidence of runaway man-made global warming and a sign that the planet is about to overheat.  Go figure.

Or at least, maybe today’s climatologists need to “go figure”.  Maybe they need to acknowledge that perhaps they don’t really know enough about what’s causing the earth’s climate to change over time well enough to predict squat with accuracy.

After all, they’ve not exactly had a great track record over the last 60 years.  Nor have they been exactly consistent in their predictions and claims.

(Hat tip to Drudge and to Michaal Bastasch at The Daily Caller, who provided this story containing the link to the Harper’s article.)

  • A Blast From the Past: “Uncle Walter” Predicts the “Coming Ice Age”

Way back when – e.g., in the 1970s – climatologists weren’t worrying about “global warming”.  At that point, the prospect for general global cooling was the big concern.

However, today things have changed.  Today, the claim is that man is causing runaway warming of the planet.  Most current climatologists (or at least the most vocal ones) blame pretty much any bad weather that occurs – even harsh winter weather and extreme snowfall – on said “runaway global warming”.

Most of today’s      global warming “true believers”      grant-grubbing tools      current-day anti-mankind Luddites        eco-whackos      climate change proponents don’t want to talk about the fact that 40 years ago the consensus was that man was causing a “new ice age”.  Hell, concerns along those lines – in particular, the introduction of small particles into the stratosphere leading to high-level cloud formation and resulting runaway global cooling – was one of three things (along with sonic boom issues and concerns regarding commercial viability) that combined to kill off the US supersonic transport (SST) program in the late 1960s/early 1970s.

It’s understandable that they wouldn’t want to talk about that past prediction.  The fact that they’ve done a 180-degree “flip-flop” – and still can’t really explain things like the Roman/Medieval Warm period, the “Little Ice Age” and the much cooler weather of the late 1700s/early 1800s, and the recent nearly two-decade pause in global warming (which examination of unadjusted raw data shows actually likely extends back to the late 1930s or 1940s) leads to an obvious question they’d like to avoid.

That question is, “If you guys were 100% wrong only 40 years ago and still can’t explain all that other stuff without ‘adjusting the data’, do you really even know your ass from a hole in the ground concerning the subject?”  That’s an eminently fair question IMO.

Regardless:  though you don’t hear much about it today, back in the early and mid-1970s the media reported on the possibility of a coming ice age. In 1972, even the then “most trusted man in America” joined in beating that drum.  On September 11, 1972, he reported on that “coming ice age” – based on predictions of one of the day’s preeminent climatologists, Hubert Lamb.

Now, just who was this Hubert Lamb fellow?  He was no crackpot – he was the guy who founded the Climate Research Unit at the UK’s University of East Anglica, the same guys who today are the leading proponents of the theory that mankind is causing uncontrolled global warming.  On his death, he was lauded by the Global Warming Policy Foundation as being “the greatest climatologist of his time”, and for making “climate change a serious research subject”.

Well, of course those guys would pay him homage, even if he was saying exactly the opposite of what they preach today.  He’s almost certainly the one who created their meal ticket –  by showing them how to get government funding for their activities.

Here’s a direct link to an MP4 clip of “Uncle Walter” waxing eloquent on the subject.  The article linked above also contains an embedded version of the clip. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to get it to embed properly here.

Unlike many TAH readers, I’m old enough to remember that this was no isolated incident. The prospect for a “new ice age” was all the rage in scientific and other publications during the early and mid-1970s. Go take a look at past issues of Science News and/or the New York Times from that period; it’s there. Even the CIA published assessments concerning the possible impact.

Do I know whether or not the planet is warming? No. Neither do I know whether it’s cooling, or if what we’re seeing today is just normal variation.

But neither do today’s climatologists. Calling it “settled science” is pure bull. Until they can adequately and accurately explain the past, their current models are simply not good enough to be considered accurate and predictive. And today, they don’t seem able to adequately explain even the last 20 years – much less previous periods of truly extreme planetary warming or cooling documented in the geologic record – with out convoluted machinations and “adjusting” historical data to make it fit.

There’s an old proverb that’s IMO applicable here. It starts out, “Fool me once, shame on you; . . . . ”

  • Yer Latest “Global Warming” Update

A look at our latest “global warming” news.

Gee, just think of how much trouble we’d be in if mankind wasn’t overheating the planet!

  • Looks Like We’re Not the Only Ones Getting Some “Global Warming”

So is Jerusalem – along with the rest of Israel, from Golan to Negev.

As in just short of 8 inches of that “global warming” in Jerusalem – 20 cm, per published accounts.

The photos at the above link are worth a look.  I especially liked the pictures of the snow-covered palm trees.

But just think how bad it would be without that “global warming” we keep hearing about.

  • Yeah, Must Be Due to That “Global Warming”

Here’s your partial forecast for early tomorrow morning, courtesy of AccuWeather.

Those are projected temps – not wind chill.

According to the AccuWeather story accompanying the photo above, this is the coldest weather in parts of the mid-Atlantic since the 1800s. Lo-temp records for the date may fall as far south as Orlando, FL.

Good thing the planet is warming up, eh? (And yes – that last is sarcasm. Bigtime.)

  • A Photographic Essay on “Global Warming”

By a UK paper, of course.  Worth a look IMO.

Oh, and you know that nearly 20 year pause in global warming we keep hearing about?  Wanna guess how long solar activity (as measured by the periodic sunspot cycle) has been observed to be in decline?

If you guessed “at least 17 years” – pat yourself on the back.

But cheer up – the forecast for the next 11-year sunspot cycle soon to begin is for a continued decline.  That means it could get even cooler.

  • Perhaps “the biggest science scandal ever”

    Provided with only brief comments.

    1. Read the article (the quote in the title is from the article’s title). If you’ve been following the issue closely, it will be no surprise. If you haven’t – read the article.

    2. Orwell called his version of this practice “rectifying” history. Today, it seems to be called “adjusting the data”.

    3. Looking for a reason? “Follow the money”.
