    DETROIT (WWJ) – Two people were shot on Detroit’s west side, one fatally, in what police say is another case of a homeowner standing their ground.

    Sgt. Michael Woody said the shooting happened around 5:40 a.m. Wednesday after a man and woman, roughly 19-years-old, tried breaking into a home on Asbury Park, near 8 Mile Road and the Southfield Freeway.

    “A 47-year-old male homeowner fired shots with a rifle, several shots, striking the male suspect one time and fatally wounding him,” Woody said. “He was transported to Sinai-Grace Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.”

    The woman, who received a gunshot wound to the leg, was transported to the hospital in critical condition. No one else was injured.

    Reporting live from the scene, WWJ’s Charlie Langton said there was a commotion with neighbors gathering around the house after the shooting, but that quickly dispersed once police arrived.

    An investigation is ongoing, although police say they are treating the situation as the homeowner legally protecting his property.

    We fully support our good Detroiters, good Americans that are legally in possession of weapons, defending their homes,” Woody said. “We will support our citizens in that manner. This seems to be another one of those incidents.”

    Hooah, Detroit, you’re finally doing something right.

    The next story comes from Missouri where Harley Johnson tried to rob a convenience store;

    Johnson arrived and allegedly walking in wearing a bandana on his face.

    “He had a big can of mace and a hunting knife,” Cobb said of Johnson. “My son pulled a gun out and pointed at him. The guy run to the door and turned around and that’s when my son shot him.”

    Johnson was hit in the abdomen by Kenny Cobb, who tells FOX 2 it was that action of turning around and pointing the knife at he and his wife a second time that led him to fire.

    Johnson, now injured, managed to leave the store and get into the stolen pickup he was driving. He made it about four miles before being stopped by a Washington County deputy who was in the area.

    Chief Tango sends us our feel good story for this morning, this time it’s from Dayton, Ohio where Jeffrey Ellison tried to rob the local laundromat with a hammer;

    Jeffery Ellison, 18, is accused of trying to rob the Laundro-Mania using a hammer just before 11 p.m. Saturday.

    The owner got his gun and shot twice, hitting Ellison in the leg.

    “We’ve actually been looking for this guy. We didn’t know his identity yet but we had some surveillance video. He’d broken into this laundromat two other times to do the same thing, to steal coins out of the machines. We’re happy that he got caught,” Dayton Police Sgt. Eric Sheldon said.

    Well, gun control is starting to work, right?

    Ohio and Chief Tango both sent us this one; In Winter Haven, Florida, homeowner found an uninvited guest coming through his French doors;

    A suspect allegedly tried to enter a home when three family members armed themselves and defended their residence, police said.

    Luis F. Pena, Bacenbina A. Pena, and the son, Luis A. Pena, all live in the home. They apparently heard someone rattling the back French doors and saw a white male trying to enter their home.

    FOX 13’s Aaron Mesmer reports that the intruder was, in fact, a stranger. The father fired a warning shot, police said.

    When the suspect did not stop the burglary, all three family members armed themselves and shot at the burglar.

    A family that shoots together, lives together.

    And an update to yesterday’s feel good story about 83-year-old Walter Jones in Alabama who stopped a home invasion with a center-mass shot. Police located Mr Home Invader at a local hospital getting his center mass treated;

    The suspect is also accused of breaking into another home on Chapman Avenue, a few blocks away, just before being shot. That victim, a 60-year-old man, told police he was asleep when the intruder burst in and threatened him with a framing hammer. The victim escaped uninjured.

    After the suspect is released from the hospital, he will be charged with one count each of first-degree robbery and second-degree burglary, police said.

    Police say a man knocked at the door, and said he needed help.

    The 83-year-old man who lives at the home, Walter Johnson, answered the door and then went to call 911.

    Police say then the man began kicking in the door and managed to get inside.

    Huntsville Police say Johnson got a handgun and fired at the man once, hitting him in the chest.

    Police say the man jumped out of a window and took off.

    Huntsville Police got to the home shortly after that, but officers say they couldn’t find the man.

    Us old folks can’t fight, so we shoot.

    Chief Tango sends us our feel good stories for this morning. The first is from Alabama where an armed fellow forced his way into a woman’s home thinking she was going to be easy pickings;

    According to Autauga County Chief Deputy Sheriff Joe Sedinger, the suspect was armed with a knife when he tried to break into the home on County Road 81. Sedinger said the female homeowner feared for her safety, and for that of her niece, when she fired several shots at the intruder.

    Responding officers found the man, and he was pronounced dead on the scene shortly after 12:30 a.m.

    The second story is from Oklahoma where Steven Ferguson, who is wheelchair-bound saw a strange man in his backyard. Steven went and got his gun just in time for the fellow to draw his own gun, but Steven beat him to the draw;

    “I’m not that quick. I’m in a wheelchair. He could’ve killed me. He could’ve gotten anything he wanted,” said Ferguson who was working in his sunroom across the street from Veteran’s Park.

    “Before he flagged me, that’s when I drew and fired, that was when he was pulling his gun up,” said Ferguson.

    Steven beat the other gunman to the draw. He has a modified holster on his wheelchair. He says it’s the first time he’s shot at somebody.

    “It’s my property. I don’t like anybody standing on my property without my permission,” added Ferguson.

    Steven doesn’t think he hit the fellow, but he also doesn’t think he’ll be back.

  • Wednesday morning feel good story

    Police line

    Chief Tango sends us our feel good story this morning this time near Bismark, North Dakota, where two men forced their way into Jeff Gegelman’s home;

    Gegelman was home alone around 3:30 p.m., when the three men drove a small car into his yard, came up to the house and knocked loudly at the door.

    He didn’t like the looks of them, so he remained quiet in the house while they got back into the car. They made a U-turn in the yard, and two got back out and came up to the door.

    In the meantime, he armed himself with a .22 handgun. When the two knocked, pushed opened the door and called out, Gegelman stepped into the room, pointed a gun and said, “You came to the wrong house today.”

    He said one of the men immediately started shooting and he returned fire, shooting the gunman in the back as he took off from the house.

    “I was watching the one who was shooting, watching his gun, the smoke and fire. I’m too damned old to be shooting at people,” Gegelman said Monday. He said he estimated the shooter’s age at about 20.

    After the shooting, Gegelman followed the car out of his yard and was able to get a license plate number. He drove to Beulah, where he was able to contact police and get medical help.

    The wounded thug was on his way to the same hospital when police stopped and arrested him. The other two are still on the loose. The lesson here is to shoot first and shoot fast. But, I’m glad Mr. Gegelman will be fine.
