    Thursday morning feel good stories

    Police line

    Today’s story comes from Illinois;

    Nicolas Porcayo, 18; and Brandon Mendez, 19, came to the home in the 7300 block of Oakwood Lane in unincorporated Crystal Lake early Tuesday and demanded to speak to the residents, according to a statement from the McHenry County sheriff’s office.

    They kicked down a locked door, and the homeowner — who was armed with a firearm — demanded they leave, according to the statement. The men refused to leave, and the homeowner shot Mendez in the abdomen.

    Mendez was hospitalized and is expected to survive, according to the sheriff’s office.

    The next story is from Florida;

    [When he got up to use the restroom, Joseph] Cihak saw [Bryan] Remley digging through his living room and then fired two shots after he claims Remley charged him. Cihak’s wife called 911 after hearing the commotion.

    Police say Remley was unable to get out of the house, so Cihak held him at gunpoint until police officers arrived. Cihak said that Remley tried to negotiate to let him go, apparently saying he would come back and “mow his lawn.”

    Remley, who was carrying a small knife, was charged with armed residential burglary and violation of probation.

  • Wednesday Feel Good Stories

    AW1Ed sends us our first feel good story from New York where a father and son got to do things together;

    Officers were called to a home on Transit Road shortly after 1 a.m. on reports of two people in dark clothing trying to break in. A second call was received a short time later informing police that the suspects were being held at gunpoint by the homeowner and his son.

    Police arrived on scene and determined 18-year-old Jacob Rappleye and 22-year-old Anthony Guarino, both of Lancaster, used a ladder to climb up to a second story window and break into the home.

    Both are charged with attempted burglary, criminal mischief, and unlawful possession of marijuana.

    The second story comes from Chief Tango and happened in Illinois;

    Just before 8 a.m. Tuesday, the woman called police to report that two people were attempting to break into her home in 7300 block of Oakwood Lane.

    One of the alleged suspects was an ex-boyfriend of the woman’s daughter, Zinke said.

    When police arrived on the scene they found two subjects, one with a gunshot wound. Initial reports indicate the woman fired a .25 caliber gun and struck one of the men, Zinke said. The man remains at an undisclosed hospital with injuries that were not life threatening.

    It is unclear how many times the woman fired the weapon.

    There were no other injuries to the woman, or her teenage children, who also were home at that time. It’s not expected that she will face charges, Zinke said.

    But, it’s Illinois, so it’s a toss-up.

    Initial investigation shows that four suspects were attempting to rob a group of victims when one of the victims produced a handgun and shot one of the suspects.

    The shot suspect, who has yet to be positively identified, died at the scene and the other suspects fled.

  • Your Labor Day feel good stories

    Chief Tango sends us our feel good stories again for your laborless day. The first is from Mississippi;

    Police Chief Chris Robertson says officers were called to a home on Butler Road around 3:45 Saturday morning about a man attempting to break into a home.

    When they arrived, Leondrick Satterwhite, 24, of New Albany had forced his way inside the home.

    The homeowner shot and killed Satterwhite.

    The next story is from Indiana;

    Detectives say two or three men were trying to break into the home when the homeowner struggled with the men over the gun and shot one of the suspects.

    A woman and small child inside the home at the time were not hurt.

    There are bullet holes in the front door and blood on the front porch and driveway.

    A short time later, a man showed up at a gas station a mile away with gunshot wounds in the leg and back.

    Finally, from Ohio the war against women ended for two criminals on a bike path while she was walking her dog;

    “Two gentlemen came out of the woods, one holding a baseball bat, and said ‘You’re coming with us’.”

    The men weren’t deterred by Dinah’s dog Gracie.

    “I said, ‘Well, what do you want?,’ and as I was saying that I reached in to my pocket and slipped my gun out, slipped the safety off as I pulled it out. As I was doing that the other gentleman came toward me and raised the baseball bat. And, I pointed the gun at them and said, ‘I have this and I’m not afraid to use it.’”

    The men took off and so far have eluded police. Dinah posted about the incident on Facebook to alert friends and neighbors, to criticism by some.

    “Most of the males’ opinion was, ‘Why didn’t you shoot them?’”

    Easy to second-guess a decision made under pressure, based on her concealed carry training, and police agree.

    “To get out of a situation, back out, get out of it as much as you can without having to discharge your firearm.”

    “I will say it’s a good thing to go from a place of danger to a place of safety, however you get that done,” said Sgt. Matt Chambers, Lancaster Police.

    “Very thankful that it turned out the way it did, and hope it doesn’t happen again, but I will be prepared.”

    This morning’s feel good story comes from Texas;

    “I was sleeping in, trying to get my rest,” Wood told reporters after the incident. “I heard the door bell ring. I’m like, who is this? I hear a strong knock. I’m like, something going on. I get up, I hear stuff at the door, I’m like, something is happening. I went and got my gun.”

    Avery Powell, 25, made his way into Wood’s home by kicking in the front door, breaking the hinges off and busting the door frame in the process.

    With the 911 operator on the other end of the phone he held in one hand and gun in his other hand, Wood came face to face with Powell, local media reported.

    Wood warned Powell to stop, but his warning was ignored. Powell continued to make his way toward Wood, who at that point felt he had limited options.

    “Then everything went bad,” said Wood, still visibly upset over the entire incident.

    While still on the phone with 911, Wood pulled the trigger, striking Powell a single time in the torso. And that point, Powell stopped, dropped to the ground and began begging.

    “After everything happened, he was on the floor saying, ‘I want to call my girlfriend,’” Wood said. “I said, ‘Man, why did you do this?’ And he said, ‘I’m a thief.’”

    Yet another feel good story from Chief Tango, this time it’s from New Mexico;

    A deputy had just stopped a driver nearby when he heard the shots around 6 p.m. He rushed to the Dairy Queen at 427 Isleta SW, south of Bridge Boulevard, and found a man outside the restaurant with gunshot wounds, according to BCSO spokesman Sgt. Aaron Williamson.

    “It does appear at this point it was a robbery gone wrong,” Williamson said.

    Williamson said the man went to the Dairy Queen’s window with a gun and demanded money. The cashier gave him money and ducked behind the counter. The man then asked for more money. That’s when a different restaurant employee, “in fear of his own life,” fired at the robber, he said.

    The man was struck at least once and died after being transported to University of New Mexico Hospital.

    […]

    No restaurant employees were injured during the incident, Williamson said. They were sheltered in place and locked the business down until deputies arrived.

    Suddenly, I feel the need for a Blizzard.

    Our morning feel good story today comes from Florida where legally blind Melchisedec Williams was a victim of his own nephew’s attempt to harm him after a break in.

    The nephew cut the power to the victim’s house on the 2900 block of Chipco Street and broke in through a bedroom window, police said.

    He then grabbed a knife from the kitchen and, flashlight in hand, came for uncle and homeowner Melchisedec Williams.

    Williams heard the commotion, so he grabbed his handgun and fired at a shadowy figure who didn’t respond when he yelled out.

    Williams, 50, told ABC Action News his vision is poor, but he could still make out the light from the flashlight.

    “I saw the flashlight coming towards me, and that’s when I shot toward the light,” Williams told ABC Action News.
