Our first story this morning is from Florida and it is about an Army veteran, Joshua Anderson of Port St. Lucie, who was fishing when he saw two homeless fellows beating us a woman;
“He saw a woman being attacked at night, and he went to her aid. In my opinion I think he did the right thing,” the sheriff says.
Anderson is a disabled Army veteran. The sheriff couldn’t specify what his disability was.
He says the two homeless men were threatening Anderson and one of them shoved him.
That’s when witnesses say Anderson told the two that he had a gun and that they should back off.
But the sheriff says the two didn’t leave him alone, and that’s when he shot them both in the torso.
“You don’t have an obligation to allow yourself to be attacked,” the sheriff says.
Next up is Ohio, where a restraining is just a piece of paper, even for off-duty female police officers like Sarah Berkey in regards to her really ex-ex-boyfriend Adam Jovicic;
The woman who dialed 911 is heard screaming.
A man’s voice is heard in the background, and the woman apologizes, crying and screaming.
There is a dog barking in the background, and the man asks the woman if she wants to die. The barking and screaming continues for nearly 5 minutes. Then, pops can be heard, and then silence.
The woman said, “Please help me. I shot him. I shot him.”
She tells the dispatcher that he broke in.
The Summit County Medical Examiner said Jovicic was shot at the home at about 2 a.m. on Thursday.
He died from the shooting at Akron City Hospital hours later.
An 84-year-old man was able to turn the tables on a robber who hit him in the face and took his wallet.
Doug Jandebeur wasn’t too flustered about being robbed Monday night in front of his business near 71st and Lewis, especially after he was able to send the robber running away in fear.
Video shows Jandebeur walked to his black truck when the robber came up behind him.
“The guy starts saying, ‘Don’t turn around, don’t turn around,’” Jandebeur said.
At first he thought it was one of his buddies playing a trick until the robber punched him in the side of the face.
“I felt him take my billfold out and he head over to the door where my wife was,” said Jandebeur.
The robber stopped near the door – like he was looking inside the billfold – then, all of a sudden, he took off running.
We asked what scared the man off, Jandebeur said, “I pulled out my automatic and was getting ready to ventilate him.”
He pulled his gun out of his left pocket, and that’s when the tables were turned, and the robber was the one afraid.
When officers got to the scene, the homeowner said he was awakened by the sound of his garage door opening and his dogs growling. The homeowner told police he then grabbed a semi-automatic pistol and went to investigate.
The homeowner said he went out the door going into the garage and saw a man walking from the driveway near his truck toward the garage, police said. That’s when the homeowner told police he yelled at the man to stop.
The man then took off running and the homeowner fired one round from his pistol, police said. It was not known whether or not the man was struck by the bullet.
Police said the homeowner then went into the alley where he saw a pickup running without anyone inside. He looked inside the bed of the truck and saw several items that had been stolen from his truck, police said.
The homeowner grabbed his property and then turned to walk back to his home. The suspect vehicle took off down the alley and the homeowner fired two to three more shots at the pickup, police said. It was also not known of anything was hit by the bullets.
A few parting shots makes your intentions clear to the departing criminals. But it’s not recommended.
From Chief Tango comes three more beginning with another one from Texas;
Jonathan Lee McDonald, 35, was arrested and charged with criminal trespass Tuesday morning, after causing a disturbance at Daron Barnes’s Winchester Ave home.
She and her two-year-old daughter were home alone when a “suspicious man” showed up at their front door around 9:30 a.m.
“He wouldn’t stop knocking on the front door, then he broke through our fence to get into the backyard and started trying to get through our back door,” Barnes told NewsWest 9. “I ran to get my husband’s gun [and] fired a warning shot into the air.”
She said “mother’s instinct” pushed her to do whatever was necessary to protect her daughter.
McDonald, realizing she was in the house and armed with a gun, allegedly fled on foot.
“Odessa Police were able to catch the suspect in the alley,” said Cpl. Steve LeSueur. “That suspect was charged with criminal trespassing. He also had a couple warrants out for his arrest.”
Apparently, Mister Thief was wanted for other crimes. he claims that he was just looking for gas money donations. Now, he doesn’t need gas. Problem solved.
The robbery occurred at Matthews Jewelers along North Nob Hill Road and Northwest First Court. According to police, a man requested to see a chain from the store’s display, then took off running with it.
A store employee shot at the thief’s car after the driver nearly hit him before taking off.
The victim told police during the altercation with the men, he was able to arm himself with a handgun and exchanged fire with the men. One of the men was hit in the shoulder. He is in custody and has non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The other man fled after the shooting and police are searching for him. It’s unclear if the man who fled was the one with the gun, police said. A detailed description of the man has not been released yet.
A home across the street and two vehicles were hit by stray bullets, but no one else was hurt, police said.
It’s Spring again, so here come the thugs and criminals.
First stop this morning is Missouri, where 4, count ’em four, dangerous criminals have been removed from society;
Officers responded to multiple calls about gunshots at 1616 West 4th Street just after 5:00 am. It was there they found 32-year-old Michael Dean of Joplin dead from a gunshot wound. Dean was a suspect in the home invasion.
[…]
Shawn Hency, Dakota Bate, and Dakota Pilier have been arrested for one count each of: 1st Degree Burglary and 2nd Degree Murder, respectively. The 2nd Degree Murder arrests are a result of the death of their co-conspirator, Michael P. Dean of Oronogo, MO.
The incident happened on the 5700 block of Lenore Lane just after 9 a.m.
Officers believe a man was attempting to break into the home when he was confronted by the owner. The homeowner shot the suspect once.
Police received a 911 call from inside the home, and when they arrived they took the suspect into custody. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Another link says that he took off running after he was shot and the police arrested him as he tried to make his escape on the bus. As always, thanks to Chief Tango for the links.
According to Tarrant Police, an unidentified 26-year-old man broke into a home in the 200 block of Springdale Road in Tarrant on Saturday night around 8:20 p.m.
The man entered a bedroom of that house and was shot by a resident who was home at the time of the incident.
The suspect was transported to UAB Hospital for treatment of his injuries. Authorities say the man died from those injuries on Sunday morning around 10 a.m.
“When we got there, we found a (burglary) victim who told deputies his car alarm went off. And, when he went downstairs he brought his gun with him.
“Inside his garage he found two Hispanic males burglarizing his car, so he pointed his gun and told them to freeze,” Bryski said.
“One of the suspects, who was also armed, started to lift up his arm when the victim fired three shots, hitting the suspects’ car,” he said. “They took off in their car but crashed it nearby.”
Bryski said whether the suspects were in the car or if they were standing beside it when the shots were fired has yet to be determined.
The suspects fled after the gunfire. Their car, which deputies identified as stolen, crashed on The Old Road.
Yeah, those foot controls on a car are tough to operate with crap running down your leg.
AW1Ed sends us our first feel good story for this Sunday morning, it’s from Virginia;
Officers said they received a call about a burglary in progress in the 100 block of Grace Drive around 10:36 p.m. When officers were traveling to the residence, they were notified there had been a shooting at the home.
The woman who fired the shot told 10 On Your Side it all played out while she was on the phone with 911 dispatchers.
“I mean, he was coming at me, and I think he was yelling, but you know, it’s one of those things were it was so fast, I don’t know, but all I knew is he was coming at me and I knew if he got past me, my daughter was in the back room,” said the woman, who asked not to be identified.
[…]
The woman said she didn’t hesitate to pull the trigger, thanks to trips to the gun range with her husband. He is a James City County police officer, who was on duty last night when the man tried breaking in.
“Had I not been able to protect myself with the gun, I don’t know what he would have done to me,” she said. “I don’t know what he would have done to my daughter, there’s no telling, but I’ll never have to find out because I stopped the situation.”
Also, you shouldn’t get between a bear cub and it’s mother either.
Chief Tango sends us two more stories, the first is from North Carolina;
A 27-year-old man suspected of a home invasion Friday evening is in the hospital after the homeowner shot him.
At 5:13 p.m., the Fayetteville Police Department was called to the 500 block of Mayview Street. Officers said the homeowner armed himself and shot the intruder as he entered the house, a news release from the Fayetteville Police Department said.
The man was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. His condition was not immediately available.
The homeowner told deputies he found a strange man inside his home. He also told deputies that the suspect’s small caliber gun went off, hitting the suspect in the abdomen, while they were wrestling.
That suspect, 18-year-old Sergio Corona, is now in the hospital. Sheriff Cass says they plan to arrest Corona for aggravated robbery upon release.
Your feel good story comes from California this morning;
The suspect, whose name was withheld, entered an apartment on V Street, near Union Avenue, around 1:45 a.m. Thursday. He wore a mask, had a gun and demanded money from the person living in the apartment and that person’s guests, police said.
The resident, whose name was also withheld, and one of the guests struggled with the suspect.
Another guest was shot during the fight over the gun. That man, whose name was withheld, later died.
The resident gained control of the gun and shot the suspect, who was later arrested at Kern Medical Center.
Upon arrival [the police] found Kejuan Shields and Demario Harris dead inside an apartment. Police say the resident was the shooter.
Homicide detective Sgt. Dave Walker says Shields, Harris and a third suspect were involved in a disagreement outside the resident’s apartment. When the resident and a friend retreated into the apartment, Shields, Harris and the third suspect broke through the door and began assaulting the resident’s friend.
The resident told police one of the suspects had a handgun.
Walker says the resident, who is wheelchair bound, shot and killed Shields and Harris and the third suspect escaped through a bedroom window. That suspect is described as a black male, about 5 feet 7 and 150 pounds, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.
“There was a poker game occurring at one of the apartments, and we know at least one person, maybe two, had gone to the game to rob the participants,” [Chief of Police Don Pussehl Jr.] said. “That’s what started this whole thing.”
The double shooting happened at 11:47 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, at Camelot Place Apartments, 122 Ivanhoe, Pussehl has said.
One of the poker players had a handgun, and gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and one of the players, Pussehl said.
The robbery suspect was fatally shot and another poker player at the apartment was injured, Pussehl said. The injured poker player was in stable condition at Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw.
The preliminary investigation indicates he broke a window and went inside the home, where she lives with her toddler daughter, said spokeswoman Holly McPherson.
The call initially came in as a burglary in progress and while officers were heading to the home, she called again to report the shooting, McPherson added.
They arrived and found a 25-year-old man who’d been shot.
He was taken to the hospital for treatment; the woman and child weren’t hurt.
Police say the woman and man don’t know each other.
Those stories came from Chief Tango. Here’s a bonus story from Florida where a homeowner teamed up with police to end a shootout with with burglars;
JSO Director Tom Hackey said two teenagers were in a home on West 30th Street about 2 p.m. when a couple of men somehow broke into the home. The teenagers called their father, who works nearby. Police responded to a burglary-in-progress call, arriving at the same time as the father arrived home.
Officer Matthew Kreuger saw one of the suspects climbing out the window, pulled his taser and ordered the person to surrender. About that time, shots were fired at the officer, who pulled his gun and fired back. The second suspect appeared and more gunfire was exchanged.
When the officers came around the front of the house, the homeowner was holding one suspect at gunpoint, and that suspect had a gunshot wound to his shoulder. That suspect was taken UF Health Jacksonville with non-life-threatening injuries.
Hackney said the homeowner had also fired his gun, so it wasn’t clear who shot the first suspect.
Personally, if the police were there, I’d choose to put my gun away and let them do their jobs. It would lessen the chance that I’d get misidentified as a bad guy. But, I’m glad this one worked out for the forces of good.
