  • The face of false outrage

    Delegate Eleanor Holmes-Norton compares the government shut down to “bombing innocent civilians”;

    Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton Upset Over Treatment of DC During Shutdown Resolution Talks: MyFoxDC.com

    Does anyone remember her outrage when Congress didn’t pass a budget last year? And, honestly, she was about as coherent as your average DC wino. She said something about Guantanamo (the closing of which the Democrat didn’t fund last year either) and something about the district’s murder of unborn children and DC’s residents funding the same.

    DC should be embarrassed that this illiterate bonehead represents them in Congress. But, I guess she’s the result of some obscure jobs program. But, I’m pretty sure that if DC residents quit electing knuckleheads like Norton or Holmes or whatever, they’ll be a step closer to statehood rights.

    I remember when they thought they’d get representation in the Senate back in 1993, they elected Jesse Jackson, who wasn’t even a resident of DC. With an absolutely ignorant electorate, who wants to give them voting representation in Congress?

  • Youth Crime Rising on Washington’s Metro

    A workmate sent us this link to a Washington Post story about the Washington Metro Transit Authority changing the student passes on trains and buses to ID the users in order to lower the crime rate on trains and buses;

    The transit authority is trying to reverse a rising incidence of crime on its sprawling rail and bus network, authorities said.

    “Unfortunately, our young people are running in groups, and they are taking advantage of people,” Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn said. He discussed the plan Thursday during a meeting of Metro’s board of directors.

    I don’t know how that’ll help much. My solution to their crime problem is to sell off the Transit cops’ SUVs and make them get on the platforms and trains to provide a deterrence to the crime wave.

    I know it’s like I’m ignorant, but I just don’t see the value of having a police force called “transit police” that all ride around from Dunkin’ Donuts to Popeye’s chicken joints to 7-11 for their whole shift in their big, fancy SUVs. I rode the Metro at peak hours for a decade and I’ll wager I saw cops on the trains and platforms (through DC’s northeast quadrant) four times.

    The key to good policing is actually acting like you’re the police.

    Of course, that doesn’t absolve parents of their responsibility to make their kids come home, either. The reason kids are wandering around in felonious packs is largely the fault of parents, but if Metro is trying to do something, kick those cops out on their beats.

  • Has anyone even heard of these people?

    It seems that the one of the many groups that will be cut off from funding is a group called US Institute of Peace At first glance I thought that it might be a side project from groups like Veterans for Peace. But it seems that it has been around for awhile saying that they gave a review about Iraq headed by former Secretary of State James Baker and former Congressman Lee Hamilton. So when it’s funding was cut people on Facebook were quick to respond about their disapprove.

    “How ironic, even as our nation is at war in Afghanistan and shifting from war to peace in Iraq, that anyone in Congress could decide that now is the right time to undermine a proven, innovative congressional institution on the frontlines — helping US men and women in uniform, and on the civilian side, to save lives,” USIP President Richard Solomon wrote at Politico Thursday.

    What training? Has anyone here heard of anything benefiting to the situation in any form or action? If so I certainly did not see it.

    Of course some of the facebook comments give the stereotypical reply.

    We are still fighting 2 wars.With whom?With shadows of ourselves.How anybody can call it wars??We invaded 2 countries on very questionable base.No MWDs in Iraq.But,they have had capacity,like GWB said.Yes,capacity.Al Qaida in Afganistan?Fab…ricated as we please.8 years bloody spending and we are very close to VICTORY.Victory??You read me??We lost it very next day we started.No win situation.We are biggest Warmongering country in the world ,but we are #1 in global peace achievement.Something is deadly wrong about this picture.Almost in all our allies countries,people protesting against government,who is pro America.Government only-not citizens.How long we can sustain the satus-quo bribing governments to our interests ??The game is over I think.

    Ugh, yea is about all I can say to that without going crazy trying to reply to that one.

  • DC murder rate is a shell game

    Some of you may remember that the DC government was bragging last year that they’d got the murder rate to the lowest in 45 years.

    In a one on one interview with Fox 5 Monday, DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier said it all has to do with focusing on a small group of violent offenders and working closely with the community.

    “The first is focusing on those repeat violent gun offenders,” said Chief Cathy Lanier in an interview in her office Monday. “It’s a small number of people who consistently carry guns and engage in repeat violent gun offenses. If you can focus on those people and get them off the street that is the number one key ingredient.”

    Blah-blah-f***ing-blah. All they did was push the criminals across the state line to Prince George’s County, Maryland. In fact murder, rates went up in every county that touches the District in Maryland and Virginia.

    On Facebook I joked the other morning that more Americans have died violently in Prince George’s County this year than in Afghanistan and that we should withdraw from Maryland immediately. Where’s the IVAW?

    The truth is that 13 people have been killed in PG County in the first 14 days of this year as of this morning.

    Police now say there have only been 12 homicides this year, as one death is considered justifiable. A 30-year-old was shot and killed Tuesday by a homeowner while trying to break into the owner’s New Carrollton residence. “The long and short of it is intent,” Cpl. Evan Baxter explained.

    Yeah, intent. If the homeowner hadn’t killed the intruder, the homeowner would be dead…either way someone was going to die as the result of a crime.

    Anyway, DC pushes it’s criminals out of the district and they become someone else’s problem, but DC has the lowest murder rate it’s had in years. Like when DC’s former chief Ramsey blamed the increase in crime on the fact that all of the criminals were done serving their ten years sentences and were back on the streets.

    So now PG County has declared an emergency and they’ve increased the number of cops on their streets. So the criminals will head back into DC.

  • The wildlife in DC

    Old Trooper sent us this video. I’d seen it last night. It’s a guy at L’Enfant Plaza Metro station in DC on the south side of the Smithsonian museums who was reading a book while waiting for the subway train. He’s suddenly and without reason attacked by what he describes as pre-teens.

    The other children in the station just film the attack on their cell phones and laugh at the guy.

    His brother writes;

    He’s hoarse from yelling for help; no one came to his aid, though lots of people stood around and watched. He finally broke away and ran and pounded on the info kiosk and got the Metro attendant’s attention and got them to call 911.

    Metro police eventually showed up. I don’t know if the kids will be caught; the main ones ran off, while other “eyewitnesses” offered to sell him their video footage evidence before they too, disappeared.

    I was mugged once in a DC Metro station (Brookland/Catholic University station) by 5 teenage boys in much the same manner. When I got the station master’s attention and he reviewed the tape, he said it was my fault because I’d fought back and wouldn’t call the Metro cops. Now, you know why they won’t let anyone carry guns in DC – there’d be dead teenagers littering the streets.

  • DC Cop caught in drug case

    I want to be clear right at the beginning, this is not representative of the DC police force. I’ve known good Metro officers and I’ve seen DC Police who do their jobs as well as any police department. However, in many cases, hiring for the Metro Police Department is nothing more than a jobs program;

    Officer Tamara McGuire, a three-year Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officer assigned to the 2nd District until she was placed on administrative leave in May, lived with co-defendant Arthur Elliott III and their young child with “full knowledge of Mr. Elliott’s drug dealing activities,” according to court documents.

    “She acted as lookout and warned Elliott of police presence.”

    How does someone like this get past the initial screening process? A single mother with a drug-dealing boyfriend.

    Like I said, there are good cops in DC, but back a few years ago, when Chief Ramsey tried to call a police emergency to react to criminal activity increases, Many officers complained that they couldn’t work nights because they couldn’t find a babysitter during those hours and the unions got Ramsey to back off of law enforcement during the hours of actual criminal activity.

    The new police chief has overcome some of these problems, but I have to think that this drug dealing officer was hired during Chief Cathy Lanier’s tenure.

  • What makes people think that this video is credible?

    Seems that there is a newer video that is making it rounds claiming that it has President Obama claiming that he is not a US Citizen on video.

    Except that a few things come to mind.

    1. When he mentions Hawaii and Kenya noticed the inflection change and that the video pans away right before the word.

    2. Notice the multiple changes in the video angle, if this was from a amateur video it would not keep the audio track the same if the footage has been change like that.

    3. Considering how Overt the video make President Obama that you would think that other people would have picked up on this by now.

    So on closing this looks like nothing more then badly edited video trying to validated the Birther movement.

    This is the site that they got the video from.

    This is not “political.”
    This is just for fun.
    This is not an “Anti-Obama” site.
    This is not a “Pro-Obama” site.
    This is an “Obama Humor” site.
    No need to discuss politics here.
    There are plenty of other sites for that.

  • A Department of Peace?

    This all started a few days ago on Facebook. I posted in reply to this video about General Petraeus. It got started with this comment.

    “The general wants more war. Gee whiz.” …which underlines the need for civilian CONTROL of the military, not handing control over to those who want more war, the way the previous, corrupt, criminal mis-administration did (and this administration is doing now)!

    Civilian control? You mean like it is now with the President in charge? What more were you really expecting? In which I got my answer.

    …When there is a Secretary of Peace advising the President at NSA briefings, I would think the civilian control is adequate to balance a Department that funnels billions of dollars to the war industry, which funnels enough of it to Congress to keep it in the war business.

    You mean the department of the Federal Government and Congress? The ones that approve all of the military’s budget? Also before you just view this as a joke there have been several attempts for a bill that would create such a position. It has been submitted in 2005, 2007 and 2009. All as of this posting date have not gotten past Committee. The sponsor of the bill, Rep. Dennis Kucinich has not made any noticeable changes to the bill each time he has submitted it.

    Here is the full Bill, and from what I have read so far most of it if not all is based on the assumption that this will be enforceable outside of conventional methods. But that is not stopping people from trying to raise support for this bill once again.
