  • IRS Scandal Update – 18 May 2013

    Today’s update for the last 24 hours or so:

    But don’t worry about any of that, folks.  Just sit back and listen to the former head of the IRS, Steve Miller, speaking about the recent targeting of conservative group and individuals by his agency:  “It is absolutely not illegal.”

    Sweet Jesus – what’s next?   Is someone in this Administration about to stand up and publicly say, “If the President does it, it’s not illegal”?

  • Friday feel good story

    A woman in Toledo, OH confronted a man who was trying to force his way into her house, according to ABC13;

    “I screamed as loud as I could, ‘get off my porch. I have a gun. I will shoot you.’ And he stayed at the door,” explained Collins. “I’m like, ‘Get off my porch. I have a gun. I will shoot you.’ He didn’t move, so I opened the door and there he was standing 5 inches from the barrel of a loaded .357.”

    Toledo Police arrested Kyle Caldwell, who’s 31 and from Temperance, Michigan.

    Collins says she didn’t shoot him after what happened not far away on Douglas last month.

    A homeowner there shot and killed a 24-year-old who was also attempting to get inside.

    Instead of spending the night in the hospital, or worse, Caldwell is spending the night in jail.

    Betty Collins says that she has had things stolen out of her car in the past, and that she’d had enough. her boyfriend said that if he had been home, he’d have shot Caldwell, so everyone was lucky all around.

  • Another “IRS Thing” Update

    Some additional revelations regarding the ongoing IRS scandal that came out in the past 24 hours:

    But again, folks:  “don’t worry – be happy”.  Everything is under control.  The Administration has only your best interests in mind.  They have investigated the matter and found that all this IRS brouhaha was due to “two ‘rogue’ employees in the agency’s Cincinnati office”.

    Yeah.  Right.  If you believe that last claim, I have this bridge.  And I can make you a really great deal on it.

  • Even More on that “IRS Thing”

    It’s beginning to look like the politically-motivated abuses at the IRS have been around for a while longer than originally thought.  And it also looks like they may be a bit more expansive – both organizationally and in scope – than originally reported.

    Here new highlights that have been reported over the last 24 hours or so:

    Yes, the above appears to draw a rather troubling picture.  But don’t worry.  The Administration has everything under control.  Nothing to see here; move along.  “Pay no attention to the man behind the screen.”

    Or the names on the “enemies list”.

  • The Latest on Sinclair

    Well, it looks like Jeffery A. Sinclair’s (presumably) high priced legal team is getting results.  The Army has dropped one charge against him.

    Sinclair is no longer charged with alcohol possession.  Military prosecutors have agreed to drop that charge.

    His defense team is also asking that the charges relating to porn possession be tossed.  They’re claiming that others had access to the computer, and that the search “violated Sinclair’s First Amendment rights”.

    Um, yeah.  Somehow I don’t remember people serving in-theater on active duty having quite the same freedom to speak their mind and/or access sexually explicit materials as your typical civilian in CONUS.  But maybe I’m wrong.

    The other charges against Sinclair – including forcible sodomy, indecent acts, violating orders and adultery – remain in effect.

    Stay tuned.

  • Yet More About That “IRS Thing”

    Remember that “IRS thing” Doc Baily and I have each written about previously here at TAH?  You know, where private advocacy groups were apparently targeted for “special attention” by the IRS based on political philosophy, ethnicity, or  because they “contradict the Administration’s public policies”?

    Well, it’s possible that’s not all that was going on.  According to an article at the Daily Caller yesterday, it appears that information might have also been “leaked” by a person or persons at the IRS for partisan political purposes.  Specifically, it appears that paperwork showing a donation made by GOP Presidential candidate Mitt Romney to the National Organization for Marriage (which received a large amount of airplay during the last Presidential campaign) may have been leaked by the IRS.

    If you’re thinking that’s illegal – you’re correct.  See the Daily Caller article for details.

    Separately, in a book written well before this latest IRS brouhaha became public, former SECDEF Donald Rumsfeld indicated that corporate executives often refrain from public criticism of the President or his policies out of fear of possible future retaliation by government agencies.   He indicates that corporate executives often considered possible actions by the IRS, SEC, congressional committees, and other government agencies before voicing public opposition.

    Rumsfeld does not come out and state that he has knowledge of such abuse.  However, the implication is reasonably clear:  corporate executives have seen enough “temporal coincidences” between public statements against Presidential positions or polices and additional regulatory scrutiny to notice – and to be wary.

    Stay tuned.  This looks to be getting “curioser and curioser” with each passing day.

  • Mothers’ Day feel good story

    Chief Tango sends us links to the story of a Michigan caregiver, who after discovering that his grandmother’s home had been burglarized, decided that he should stay with her with his rifle. The burglar struck again and the grandson fired once and missed the intruder;

    The man said he looked out and saw a car in the driveway occupied by a female in the passenger seat. He stated that while attempting to get the license plate number, the driver, who was also the suspected intruder, attempted to hit him with the car, so he fired more shots.

    Police said the suspect, who was struck this time, managed to get away and drove to an area hospital.

    Investigators tell WNEM.com that the suspect is a fugitive parole absconder.

    From another link;

    [Buena Vista police Sgt. Greg] Klecker said he expects the man to face charges of first-degree home invasion and said the prosecutor’s office will have to “review the timeline of events” to determine if charges will be filed against the caregiver.

    “We questioned him Sunday,” Klecker said, adding the shooter is not being detained. “He is being fully cooperative.”

  • New Orleans shooting at Mothers’ Day Parade

    NOLA Mothers Day

    As Sporkmaster reported earlier, at least nineteen people in New Orleans were injured yesterday when a Patriot Tea Partier opened fire on a crowd for no apparent reason. A picture of the obviously right wing extremist is at the top of this post. From NBC40;

    The victims included 10 men, seven women, a boy and a girl. The children, both 10 years old, were grazed and in good condition.

    It’s not the first time gunfire has shattered a festive mood in the city this year. Five people were wounded in January after a Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade, and four were wounded in a shooting in the French Quarter in the days leading up to Mardi Gras.

    “The specialness of the day doesn’t appear to interrupt the relentless drumbeat of violence,” Mayor Mitch Landrieu said at a news conference outside a hospital where victims were being treated Sunday night.

    Mary Beth Romig, a spokeswoman for the FBI in New Orleans, said federal investigators have no indication the shooting was an act of terrorism.

    “It’s strictly an act of street violence in New Orleans,” she said.

    Yeah, well, to me anytime someone opens fire on a crowd of innocent, unarmed people, it’s terrorism. While there is no one taking credit for the act, someone did it to get some attention for something. The police suspect that more one shooter was on the scene making their point punctuated with gun fire.
