  • Dallas murderer was a “good son” until the Army

    According to the Wall Street Journal, that murderer fellow in Dallas who shot a dozen police officers didn’t go bad until he put a uniform in the Army Reserve;

    Friends described the shooter as once an affable man who told jokes. The gunman’s mother, Delphene Johnson, told the Blaze that her son became a “hermit” after he returned from the military. She said that he didn’t recall any specific event during his time at the military, which included a deployment in Afghanistan, but she said he was disappointed by the experience.

    “He was a good son,” she said…XXX was discharged from the military after facing a sexual-harassment allegation.

    “The military was not what XXX thought it would be, he was very disappointed, very disappointed,” Delphene Johnson said. “But it may be that the ideal that he thought of our government—of what he thought the military represented—it just didn’t live up to his expectation.”

    I wonder what he thought being a carpenter in the Army Reserves was supposed to be? Of course, this was a guy who had panties mailed to a love interest in a war zone and stole her panties when he had the opportunity. I also wonder how many Army Reservist carpenters didn’t shoot any cops this week.

  • What a real war on drugs looks like

    A few weeks ago, I mentioned that Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’ declared a war on drugs in his country when he took office. Police have admitted to killing 110 drug suspects since then, but there are others that have turned up dead that police don’t admit to killing.

    From AFP;

    As the official death toll has mounted, and other bodies not confirmed killed by police have been found with placards declaring them drug traffickers, human rights lawyers and some lawmakers have expressed deep concerns about the war on crime spiralling out of control.

    In response to the criticism, Solicitor General Jose Calida held a press conference on Monday at national police headquarters to insist on the legality of the police killings and to encourage more deaths of people suspected of being involved in the drug trade.

    “To me, that is not enough,” Calida said of the killings so far.

    Now, I certainly don’t advocate that we adopt that method in the United States, in fact, we’re close enough to being a third world country without taking that last step. I don’t like the death penalty as it is – the government shouldn’t be in the business of declaring who should live and who should die given their incompetence is most things.

  • LTC Dennis Dockery; double dipping

    LTC Dennis Dockery; double dipping

    Dockery

    Bobo sends us a link to the Stars & Stripes which tells the story of Dennis Dockery, an Army Reserve Lieutenant Colonel and a corrections officer in Connecticut. While he was on active duty from 2009 to 2012, he was incarcerated in the Leavenworth correction barracks by the Army for smacking women around and adultery.

    Dockery altered paperwork with his civilian job to make it appear as if he was working at his Army job at Leavenworth instead of being a prisoner of the system.

    As a military reservist, Dockery was still on the state payroll and entitled to a portion of his state salary while activated for Operation Iraqi Freedom.

    He was not entitled to any salary while serving time in a military prison, but forged his orders so that it appeared he was serving at Fort Leavenworth rather than incarcerated, according to the warrant.

    […]

    A military judge convicted Dockery of two counts of adultery, assault by battery, and two counts of engaging in a prohibited relationship. He was sentenced to 17 months of confinement at Leavenworth and thrown out of the Army. He also lost his Army retirement benefits.

    After his release from Leavenworth, Dockery returned to Connecticut and went back to work at the Department of Correction. Late last year, human resources staff at the department got a tip about Dockery’s prison sentence at Leavenworth and began investigating.

    So, it was a tip that got him busted, not the bureaucracies talking to each other. He only benefited about $5000 from the scam – it hardly seems worth the penalty he faces now.

    May 25,the case was turned over to investigators in the Chief State’s Attorney’s Office, who prepared an arrest warrant that was signed Tuesday. DOC fired Dockery May 27. He was scheduled to retire June 1.

  • Gun fight in Dallas

    Gun fight in Dallas

    Dallas

    A gunman in Dallas, Texas, shot and killed 5 police officers and wounded six others. He’s been identified to us as Micah Xavier Johnson, a veteran of the Army Reserve from Mesquite, Texas. He served in Afghanistan in 2013 – 2014. According to Dallas police who negotiated with him, he wanted to kill white police officers. He was killed when police sent a robot into a parking garage he was occupying to disarm his bomb and he “blowed up”. From Fox News;

    Police and federal authorities were working to determine whether more people were involved in what was the nation’s deadliest day for police since 9/11.

    […]

    The protest was one of several around the country, prompted by police shootings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota.

    […]

    “He said he was upset at white people,” Brown said. “He said he wanted to kill white people, especially white police officers.”

    Initial reports said there was more than one sniper, but at the news conference, Brown indicated the dead suspect may have been the sole gunman. Although he told police he was “not affiliated” with anyone else, three others were being held.

    The first officer identified as one of his victims was Brent Thompson, who was married just a few days ago. He was a Marine Corps veteran. From Fox News;

    After serving in the Marines, Thompson later worked for a private Pentagon contractor that hired and trained Iraqi and Afghan police in the concepts of “democratic policing.” The instruction included training in how to avoid an ambush, according to his LinkedIn page.

    “I was responsible for the day to day operations conducted by our American police officers who trained and mentored the Iraqi Police,” he wrote.

    He also served as an instructor at the Dallas police academy.

  • Nicholas Marshall, Part II

    Nicholas Marshall, Part II

    Nicholas Marshall1

    About five years ago, we talked about Nicholas Marshall, when he was arrested leading police in Massachusetts on a high speed chase in a stolen car. After he was caught, Marshall told the court that he was a war hero with a Silver Star and two Bronze Star Medals and he showed the court some scars to verify his service in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Army told the judge that he was AWOL and that they had a warrant out for him. He also had outstanding warrants in Rhode Island and Pennsylvania. So I’m wondering how he murdered his wife earlier this month with all of those pending sentences.

    Nicholas Marshall, 31, of Raeford, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection to the death of 36-year-old Sheryl Dianne Marshall.

    Deputies found the victim dead at a home in Raeford during the afternoon of May 31, according to authorities.

    Deputies said the suspect had previously called officials about his wife’s well-being. Shortly later, another call was made that said the suspect was shot. He then drove himself to a fire station and asked for help.

    After he killed his wife, he shot himself to cover up for her murder.

    They ought to try to figure out how he got a gun, too. I’ll bet that it wasn’t at a gun show.

  • Two Ways to Save on Groceries

    Grocery bills can be a killer.  Still, you can’t really avoid them – though many of us eat too much for our own good, one does have to eat.

    Now, there are two ways to save on those food bills.  First:  you can shop smarter.  Apparently many stores and foods have multiple recurring sale “cycles”; buying at the right time in quantity can save a pretty penny.  This article from AOL News gives a good description.

    There’s also a second way – though it’s not one I’d recommend.  This video demonstrates both the method and its drawbacks.

    More info about the latter incident can be found here.  I’m guessing the would-be thief will have a hard time living this one down.

    I do hope they thoroughly sanitized those packages before putting them back out for sale, though.

  • Crowd-sourcing terrorism excuses

    Noor Zahi Salman is the ex-wife of the animal that gunned down scores of people in that club in Orlando last weekend. According to CBS News last week, the feds have been contemplating arresting her because she knew about his plans and didn’t contact authorities. She says that she tried to talk him out of it.

    This week CBS reports that a former teacher of Salman says that she shouldn’t be held responsible because she had a learning disability and that Noor was in a special ed class in school;

    “Noor had difficulty with retention, she had difficulty with conceptualizing, understanding, all challenges to her,” Susan said. “She tried hard. She was very sweet.”

    […]

    “Noor is completely innocent and [was] unaware of the attacks,” the statement [from Salman’s family] said, adding she doesn’t understand “cause and effect.” The family said Salman was enrolled in special education classes because she needed extra help in school.

    Anyone who has been on the internet for a minute can attest that everyone is an expert on any subject. Even the worst criminal can find sympathizers in social media who will make excuses for them. Check the comments of any of our phony soldiers and you can see how the conversations drift off from the crime and into tiny bits of minutia that don’t have much to do with the subject.

    This Susan person was a teacher who can attest to Salman’s performance in the classroom, but not to her interaction with her environment. Teachers, like journalists, think they are experts on any subject presented to them.

    Salman already admitted that she knew the difference between right and wrong and tried to talk the criminal out of committing his crime, the fact remains that she didn’t call the authorities about it. I don’t know what that has to do with her special education classes. Even a kindergartner knows how to dial 9-1-1.

  • Shocker: Chicago criminals buy their guns on the street

    Yeah, I’m speechless, too. The Chicago Tribune reports that University of Chicago Crime Lab conducted a survey of their criminals to determine where they got their guns. Strangely enough, despite what we’re told by the media and the politicians, none bought their weapons at gun stores, from the internet or gun shows.

    About 70 percent said they got their guns from family, fellow gang members or through other social connections. Only two said they bought a gun at a store. It’s unclear how many of those surveyed were felons, but they can’t hold a state firearm owner’s permit — so they can’t legally purchase a weapon at a store.

    Most of the men said they had possessed semiautomatic handguns and preferred magazines with a capacity of 30 or more bullets. Only a handful said they had possessed military-style assault weapons such as an AK-47.

    Those surveyed might prefer handguns with a lot of ammunition because they aren’t good marksmen, Pollack said. The survey showed the men don’t normally practice on targets and don’t have a lot of knowledge about their weapons, he said.

    The interviewers spoke with the 100 or so criminals face-to-face and they asked folks who were in the system for violent gun-related crimes. So, of course, the solution is to write more laws to which criminals will find a work-around.
