  • Rethink Afghanistan: the rationale for war has evaporated

As in my previous posts the group Rethink Afghanistan published this as a response to the reports of Osama’s death.

On May 1st, 2011, we learned that a CIA operation in Pakistan killed Osama bin Laden.

After 10 years of war and the death of Osama bin Laden, it’s time to bring the troops home from Afghanistan. With al-Qaeda driven from the country and Bin Laden now dead, the rationale for war has evaporated. It’s time to stop now.

The swift withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan must begin immediately.

Ok lets get this straight the raid happened in Pakistan, something that Rethink Afghanistan has been very vocal about being against it.

In fact that Rethink Afghanistan was putting out videos that decry that a turning point was about to be reached. So if we had listened to you back then we would not have this moment. So that being said why should we listen to you now?

  • Osama Bin Laden Killed?

Considering how many hoaxes and virus have been sent out under this subject I have very healthy doubts about this story.

Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden has been killed by U.S. assets in a mansion outside Islamabad, U.S. officials said. President Barack Obama will announce the death of the terrorist leader tonight.

Obama will deliver the news to the nation in an address from the White House, almost 10 years after the Sept. 11 attacks that bin Laden orchestrated. Bin Laden was killed, along with other members of his family, an official said.

    ADDED:
This is what has been going around the internet as the body of Osama. (Graphic Image Warning)

ADDED x2 Seems that Rethink Afghanistan is quick to use this for political reasons.

  • A twelve year old suicide bomber used in latest attack.

On the beginning of a promised summer Taliban offensive a twelve year old boy used as suicide bomber killed at least four and wounded more then twelve at a local bazar.

The BBC’s Paul Wood in Kabul says some believe the suicide bomber, if he was 12, would be one of the youngest ever to have staged such an attack.

By one count there are more than 150 would-be suicide bombers between 13-17 years of age who have been intercepted by the Afghan security forces, he reports.

The UN is making it standard statements.

The top U.N. official in Afghanistan, Staffan de Mistura, called on pro-government forces and Taliban militants not to launch attacks on civilian locations or in areas where civilians gather. He also urged insurgents not to use improvised explosive devices indiscriminately, and called on Afghan and coalition forces to better regulate air strikes and nighttime raids targeting militants.

I would like the UN to do something without replying on NATO or the US to save them. But we can’t have everything now can we. But with videos like this is there any wonder that the Taliban will continue to keep fighting like this.

  • Panetta to Defense, Petraeus to CIA?

    TSO sends a link from Politico who thinks they have the answer to who will replace Gates as the Defense Secretary;

CIA Director Leon Panetta, the long-rumored frontrunner to replace Defense Secretary Robert Gates, is expected to be Obama’s pick, The Associated Press, NBC News, ABC News and several other sources reported Wednesday morning.

The commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, Gen. David Petraeus, is Obama’s choice to replace Panetta at the CIA.

I would think that Petraeus would take Mullen’s slot as Joint Chiefs Chairman, but, I’m sure that the Obama Administration is just trying to keep him on plantation for the next election. Panetta wasn’t qualified for his job at the CIA, so why would we expect Obama to name someone with experience for the Defense Department.

Fox News claims that Ryan Crocker will replace that dick Karl Eikenberry as ambassador to Afghanistan.

I’m sure John Kerry is upset that he wasn’t chosen, but he’s just biding his time for Hillary’s seat next year.

  • Jailbreak in Afghanistan

    Apparently, some Taliban dug a tunnel into the Kandahar prison and staged the escape of 475 prisoners including scads of Taliban warriors according to the Associated Press;

The massive overnight jailbreak in Afghanistan’s second-largest city underscores the Afghan government’s continuing weakness in the south despite an influx of international troops, funding and advisers. Kandahar city, in particular, has been a focus of the international effort to establish a strong Afghan government presence in former Taliban strongholds.

No, what this underscores is the idiocy of taking prisoners in this war. Prisoners have been a thorn in our side since Guantanamo. Prison is beginning to look like R & R for the Taliban. If we stop taking prisoners, we won’t have anymore prisoner problems.

  • “Restrepo” documentary director killed in Libya

    From MSNBC:

British photojournalist Tim Hetherington, whose documentary film on the war in Afghanistan was nominated for an Oscar, was killed in the embattled western city of Misrata, his employer, Vanity Fair, confirmed on Wednesday.

Three others working beside him were wounded by fire from a rocket propelled grenade, according to media reports. Two of the photographers — Chris Hondros and Guy Martin — were reportedly in grave condition.

Thanks to Pinto Nag and ROS.

  • In the Wreckage of an Almost-Shutdown

Today, a lot of us are taking a slightly ragged breath and relaxing a bit. Last night, around 11PM, a deal was reached that would extend for a week the operations of government as we know it. This is particularly meaningful for all of our servicemembers, many serving in harm’s way, who had already opened up Mypay to reveal a LES with only half the pay anticipated for it. This will allow them to get their midmonth pay.

Let me stress, for those few who might happen to be unaware, that unlike the rest of the government, when the military isn’t getting paid, the military is still working. People don’t stop trying to kill them just because they’re not getting paid. Instead, it’s just another worry on their mind, preventing them from being fully focused on the dangers surrounding them, because they’re too busy wondering if their family will be able to pay the rent or buy groceries.

I’d like to take a moment to thank those organizations that went above and beyond in order to make sure servicemembers didn’t have to worry about where their family’s next meal would come from: such as the Navy Federal Credit Union, that promised all servicemember’s mid-month checks would be covered by the institution. I’d also like to thank (and this is rare) the VA (or as Brandon Friedman likes to remind everyone, Veterans Affairs) for putting out a Veterans Guide to the Shutdown, to help address the justified concerns many veterans had about whether their disability checks and education benefits would arrive on the 1st.

However, what really needs to be addressed is not so pretty: why did it come so close in the first place? A lot of people in both political parties want to blame the other party. But really, both parties are to blame, and both parties gambled way too much with the lives of people who have already given up a lot to serve their country.

The one bare-minimum standard any governmental body that deals with money has is to pass a budget for the next year. But nobody wanted to pass a budget before the elections, because then they’d have to deal with possible consequences for their votes. And after the elections, when Democrats realized that they were going to be out of power next year, they hurried with pushing through the healthcare reform, instead of worrying about doing their job and passing the budget.

But the Republicans aren’t off the hook yet. Passing a budget was their job, too, and they chose to focus on ideological battles also. They decided to play a game of brinksmanship to show how tough they were for the next budget fight, ignoring the people it was going to impact. They tried to create a temporary bill that supposedly would fund the Pentagon all year, and the rest of government a week, to save the military, but then again added ideological riders on it.
Why do we put up with this? People on both sides, why do we act as though our party protects veterans and servicemembers? I think we need to acknowledge that both sides use us for photo ops and for talking points on the halls of Congress, but when it comes down to it, they don’t really care.

  • Jewish temple bombed in LA (Ooops – not a bomb)

The LA Times reported that a bomb went off in a parking lot at a Jewish temple in LA but Fox News is now reporting that it was detonated inside the temple. No reports of injuries yet.

Updated: Now Fox is saying it was a gas line or water line that burst. The pipe the bomb squads were focusing upon was a piece of that utility line. Funny how they were explaining about a “trip wire” to the pipe bomb just moments ago.
