  • Tankerbabe and other news

    Tankerbabe has a real cool story to tell you about a guitar. You need to read it. She emailed the story around a few weeks ago, but it hasn’t lost it’s luster when I read it again this morning.

    Something going around and showing up in my inbox is a story about Joe Biden’s speech to 200 new citizens who also happened to be military members and assigned to units currently deployed to Iraq.

    “As corny as it sounds,” he told the troops, “Damn, I’m proud to be an American!”

    Knowledge Is Power has pretty good response from DougM. (Hat tip to Chuck)

    Iowa Republican Senator Charles Grassley tells a constituent that if they want good health care, they should work for the government…and eat cake, too, I suppose;

    I don’t know why anyone thinks government employees’ health care is so good, by the way. There are a bunch of plans and if you want to pay a lot, you can get a great plan – I’ve had better and cheaper plans from civilian employers. I get the impression that everyone thinks government employees get free health care or something.

    Stars and Stripes reports that tourism is “booming” in Iraq. S&S also does a story about the 3rd Infantry Division “wargaming” the withdrawal from Iraq.

    Michelle Malkin started the story about fallen soldier Aaron Masters, Twitter spread it, and now Fox News writes about him.

    This isn’t news, but the price of oil fell again – just like it falls every year after the 4th of July – and every year, for some reason, it’s news.

    And this is just funny from Genghis at Ace of Spades.

    I’m actually working on something that’s pretty complicated and it won’t be up for awhile yet, so I threw these links together so everyone didn’t think I was in the stupid hospital again.

  • Zelaya heads home to Honduras (Updated 3x)

    Scroll for UPDATES.

    aueropuertozelaya3600thumb

    A few minutes ago, Manuel Zelaya, the ousted President of Honduras, headed back to Honduras on a Venzuelan (surprise!) jet, according to the Associated Press. The Constitutional President, Roberto Micheletti, has instructed the Honduran military to prevent the jet from landing with the former president.

    Thousands of protesters descended on the airport in the Honduran capital in anticipation of the showdown, some of them pressing against several hundred soldiers with riot shields. Police helicopters hovered overhead, and commercial flights were canceled.

    Micheletti also alleged that Nicaragua is moving troops to their border in an attempt at psychological intimidation, and warned them not to cross into Honduras, “because we’re ready to defend our border.”

    Zelaya is flying back to Honduras on a Venezuelan jet, the Nicaraguan army is on Honduras’ border, and where is our President? I guess he’s taking his instructions from Daniel Ortega these days;

    Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega called on the White House to hold firm against Honduras coup.

    Ortega recalled that after two months as president, Barack Obama suspended all form of cooperation with the de facto government in Madagascar.

    The least we can expect of Obama is to act with the same firmness now, he pointed out.

    The Sandinista leader told pres that the struggle against the coup continues, seeking the reestablishment of constitutional order through the return of President Manuel Zelaya to complete his mandate.

    From El Universal, my Calle J translation;

    The director of Civil Aeronautics of Honduras, Alfredo San Martin, assured the media today that the airplane that transports the demoted president of Honduras Manuel Zelaya from Washington [DC] will land in El Salvador because it does not have authorization to land in Honduran territory. San Martin indicated to the press that, because of the refusal of the Honduran authorities, the plane ” was turned aside to El Salvador, and will not land in Tegucigalpa”.

    The Honduran chancellor, Enrique Ortez, among others announced that his Government would not allow the landing of the airplane of Zelaya, reasons, for ” prudence” , he indicated.

    So where, exactly, is our President? I guess he’s in his Russia mode and can’t switch back to American mode right now.

    UPDATE: Fausta confirms that Zelaya’s plane landed in El Salvador and Honduran police have allowed protesters pass onto the airport after they promised not to commit any acts of violence.

    UPDATE: Noticias 24 reports that Zelaya’s plane is attempting to land in Honduras;

    The channel TeleSur reports that the airplane which President Zelaya has been flying over the Toncontín airport is unable to land due to the obstacles that the military placed.

    Vehicles of the troops were deployed along the runway, while helicopters flew over the airport to prevent the demoted president of Honduras from landing.

    The pilot of the airplane, in a contact with Telesur, indicated that they requested the authorization to land but it was not granted to them, threatening that they would intercept them.

    And to answer MD’s comment below;

    Zelaya, from the airplane, called for the President of the US, Barack Obama to take a firmer position in the conflict and to collaborate to speed his return to the power.

    President Chávez, minutes later, made the same plea and said that “there is no longer any doubt that the “gorilla government” [he said “gorilla” not “guerrilla” and he refers to the new Honduran government] had the support of the North American Empire”.

    Why would Chavez and Zelaya want US intervention if they weren’t already assured of the outcome.

    UPDATE: BBC reports at least one dead at the airport in clashes with the police.

  • Powell gets voter’s remorse?

    So all of a sudden Colin Powell acts like he never saw the trillions of dollars of debt coming when he endorsed Barack Obama before the election last year. Now, he thinks it might be a problem according to Jon Ward at the Washington Times;

    “I’m concerned at the number of programs that are being presented, the bills associated with these programs and the additional government that will be needed to execute them,” Mr. Powell said in an interview with CNN’s John King. It was released by the network Friday.

    Here’s a video of the interview;

    He claims he “never would have believed” that Obama would have expanded the deficit as large as it’s become in the last few months. Where was Powell during the election? Did he mute his TV every time Obama spoke? Ray Charles could have seen this deficit expansion coming from space. Well, that was probably true, that Powell did mute his TV – all Powell wanted was a Black president.

    Too little, too late. Well, Powell accomplished everything he wanted – he rehabilitated his image in the Black community after being called vile names for the years he worked for Bush – so it’s a personal victory for him – he made friends with the Democrats again. At what cost to the rest of us?

    Personally, it’s been a very long time since I’ve had any respect for Powell since he insinuated a long time ago that Conservatives aren’t compassionate. I wasn’t surprised when he turned on President Bush and then the rest of us, too. And this doesn’t surprise me either – he seems to want his cake and eat it, too.

    Anyone who welcomes him back into the party is just asking for another disappointment. Colin Powell has always done what’s best for Colin Powell, and screw the rest of the country. That’s why we didn’t finish the job in Iraq in 1991 and that’s why we went back to Iraq in 2003 – we did it all for Colin Powell.

  • Blame-storming Honduras

    Hoping something will stick to the United States, the International left is throwing fingers at the US for the coup in Honduras. I wrote earlier that Chavez blamed the US, but Honduran President Manuel Zelaya tells a different story. Apparently the US thwarted a coup on Friday (Reuters link);

    “Everything was in place for the coup and if the U.S. embassy had approved it, it would have happened. But they did not … I’m only still here in office thanks to the United States,” he said in the newspaper interview published on Sunday.

    “Last (Friday) morning, at around 1 or 2 a.m., Congress was passing a decree to incapacitate me and the armed forces were mobilized. But phone calls were made — I can’t say by who or from where — but these calls stopped the coup,” he said.

    Funny how that isn’t a headline across every banner on the internet, isn’t it?

  • If you can’t say something nice don’t say anything

    COB6 emailed me to say we should do something about Michael Jackson. I guess my post in the forum doesn’t count. Well, my parents taught me if I can’t say something nice about someone, I shouldn’t say anything. So here are some links;

    Always classy – Gateway Pundit

    Ace of Spades

    Michelle Malkin

    Ed Driscoll

    Allahpundit

    Donny Osmond on Michael Jackson

    I will say that he was sort of an entertainment bridge between me and my kids for awhile since Jackson was about four years younger than me and Thriller came out when my kids were pre-teens. So we briefly shared a mutual appreciation of Michael Jackson’s talent.

  • Dems ram cap and trade to vote

    Congressman Spencer Bachus writes in his blog that the “House leadership bypassing key committees on cap and tax“;

    The Democrat leadership is preventing the public from learning important details about the cap and tax plan by bypassing several key committees. As a Ranking Member on the Financial Services Committee, I called for hearings on the bill’s creation of a massive trading scheme for carbon emissions.

    From Drudge a link to Politico which reports that Al gore isn’t coming to DC today as he had planned (probably so we don’t have record low temperatures);

    Former Vice President Al Gore canceled plans to fly to Washington for a news conference with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday, and instead was working the phones from Tennessee to help push a landmark climate bill to passage.

    Apparently Democrats are getting antsy that the crown jewel of the their plans to rape the economy might go down to defeat if they didn’t circumvent the public. They don’t expect the Obama happy hour to do much for them. Even Democrat and Obama supporter Warren Buffet is opposed to cap and trade;

    Mike Pence pleaded from the floor of the House to call your congressman now if you oppose cap and tax.

    If you oppose the national energy tax, I say call your congressman. If you think the Democrat cap and trade bill will cap growth and trade jobs, call your congressman. If you believe the American people deserve an all-of-the-above energy strategy that will create jobs, achieve energy independence and a cleaner environment then endorse the Republican alternative, call your congressman.

    Back to Bachus;

    I am very disturbed by the repeated pattern of the House leadership in rushing expensive legislation like cap and tax, the so-called stimulus package, and appropriations bills to a vote without adequate review or debate. It’s irresponsible to fast-track legislation that puts taxpayers on the hook for literally trillions of dollars.

  • More blood on Islamic Republic’s hands

    Fox News reports that “Reports: Iran Riot Police Shooting Protesters ‘Like Animals‘”

    Twitter users believed to be in Tehran are painting a grim picture there, reporting beatings and gunfire on demonstrators supporting opposition presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi. These reports, obtained by Sky News, could not be independently confirmed by FOX News.

    Iran’s supreme leader said Wednesday that the government would not yield to demonstrators who want a disputed presidential election annulled, effectively closing the door to compromise with the opposition.

    One Twitter user I’ve been following, Persiankiwi, stopped Twittering about an hour ago;

    Here’s a video from YouTube supposedly from today – WARNING: It’s pretty gory which is why it’s below the fold.

  • When a broken ankle is good

    metro

    Two folks were killed this afternoon in a subway train accident on the DC’s Metro Red Line between Fort Totten and Takoma Park – the last two stops in the District. Yep, that’s my train and I’d have been on the Metro this afternoon if I hadn’t been getting my cast off instead. Local news video;

    It looks from the news reports at least one of the trains was headed towards Shady Grove – if they were both headed to Shady Grove, they were probably fairly empty since most of the people in DC are headed the other way to the suburbs while this train was headed into the city.

    There’s a streaming live video of the scene at the local Fox 5 station, and a live streaming video of the news broadcast.

    UPDATE: There are 4 confirmed fatalities. 1 was the female train operator.
