  • Marines’ ban on social networking

    My email inbox has been filling up with messages from those of you who are outraged that the Marine Corps has apparently banned their troops from using Facebook and Twitter and other social networking. Well, the only reason I haven’t mentioned it is because McQ did such a great job of explaining it all yesterday at Blackfive.

    To summarize, they’re just enforcing restrictions that were already in place and it seems the ban is only to affect the USMC’s network – like many employers do to conduct business.

    But “good lookin’ out” to all of you who emailed.

  • Chester Co. Peace Movement: You’re Nazis

    I got this in my email this morning forwarded from someone who decided to send it to the White House to investigate as “fishy”. It’s from Karen Porter, the nutjob who organizes the Chester County Peace Movement in Pennsylvania – the same group that physically attacked our buddy Skye;

    These people [folks protesting the President’s impending policies] are (1) not going to surrender power to a black man and (2) fanatics who will stop at nothing. I mean nothing. Got that?

    Nothing.

    It’s time that all of you understand that if you didn’t before. Some of you probably still don’t have the ability to understand how dark certain forces can be – if you can’t understand it, please go back and read some pre-World War II German history. Then maybe you’ll understand the gravity of this situation we face. Hard economic times. Scapegoating. Racial and ethnic hatred. Violence. Paranoia. Anti-intellectualism. Religious fanatacism. Sexism. Powerful money interests pulling so-called “populist” strings. What I see happening right now in this country has happened before – about 70 years ago in Germany, friends.

    Yes, you folks out there exercising your rights to freely assemble and speak your minds are nothing but a bunch of racist Nazis. besides being a poor student of history, Karen Porter has all the earmarks of a serious drama queen.

    Added: I just figured out who sent me this email. I’m not used to seeing Skye’s real name.

  • White House charges “astroturf”

    I’ve written over the last few days about how the Democrats aren’t very happy with folks using the same tactics that they used against Republicans for eight years in regards to the healthcare debate. The White House jumped into the fight yesterday when Naked Emperor released a video which had the President in his own words describing this healthcare as the impetus for single-payer, government-run healthcare. Somehow, the White House got away with calling the President a liar.

    The Washington Times writes this morning that now the White House is accusing Republicans of “astroturfing” the discussion with organized groups of professional protesters funded by well-heeled lobbyists. Really? Have they seen the RNC’s website lately? here’s a screen shot for you;

  • Left doesn’t like it’s own tactics

    At Ace of Spades, you can see videos of Kathleen Sebelius and the Senate’s newest Democrat Arlen Specter getting shouted down at a Townhall meeting and Lloyd Doggett getting a dose of Tea Partiers at his own town hall meeting.

    Well, Think Progress thinks they’ve found a “talking points memo” from Freedom Works that outlines ways to disrupt these townhall meetings. And they’re not happy about it. One commenter at Think Progress complained;

  • Dingy Harry stokes nirther passions

    Dingy Harry Reid apparently sees a way to lower Republican approval ratings – he brought up the birther controversy on the Senate floor for no good reason today according to The Hill;

    “Let’s be clear, it’s a phony issue and does not deserve even a minute of our attention on the floor of the United States Senate,” Reid said. “It’s absurd, irresponsible, baseless, and the false claims of long ago have been refuted … The American people should know that rather than helping them get ahead, some of my colleagues would rather spew ludicrous conspiracy theories.”

    Reid accused Republican lobbyists of orchestrating an attempt to discredit Obama by sending out fake letters purporting to be from minority groups. He did not name the groups specifically but called the acts “sick, dishonest and really undemocratic.”

  • Keep Rurik in your thoughts

    TSO and I met Rurik at Winter Soldier. He was dressed like one of the aged hippies to blend in with the crowd and he took a mound of notes on a legal pad while TSO and I were typing on our laptops. As a result, I’ve always said that his posts that he wrote when he got home were the definitive report on Winter Soldier.

    Since then, I’ve been dependent on the steady streams of emails that I get from Rurik to keep me up-to-date on stuff I probably missed. He’s sent us a steady stream of traffic from his own friends’ blogs, too.

    Rurik was one of us – an Army combat engineer in Vietnam.

    1stCavRVN11B emailed me that Rurik went in the hospital last night for a series of tests.

    So keep your fingers crossed, pray, light a candle, sacrifice a unicorn or whatever you normally do in these circumstances specifically for our buddy Rurik. Get better soon, pal.

  • Blackfive picks his Top Ten Milblogs

    Well, actually, the title should be “Blackfive picks the top nine milblogs and one blog who knows stuff about him that he wants to keep secret“. His list is at blogs.com.

    Matt says they didn’t include his honorable mentions, so I’ll include them here;

    Sorority Soldier is a female soldier in Iraq. Her job as broadcast journalist allows to observe quite a bit of interesting situations in country.

    Doc H’s International Adventure
    is written by a Navy doctor in Afghanistan who blogs about the trials and tribulations of training Afghans medical personnel.

    Army of Dude was nominated two years in a row for Best Military Blog. Alex Horton, it’s founder, did a tour in Iraq and is now back home writing about his memories of Iraq and commenting on current military actions. I am a fan of his Military Movie Review Haiku.

    Afghanistan My Last Tour is written by a senior Air Force sergeant embedded in an Afghan unit. He writes of his life in Afghanistan teaching, training and mentoring.

    We’re honored to be included in such a brilliant crowd, even though we blackmailed our way into it.
