  • Our greatest acomplishment

    I know you guys are probably tired of hearing about Michael P McManus, otherwise known as General Ballduster McSoulpatch, but I thought you’d take at least a passing interest that some bloggers think that our greatest accomplishment, that our place in history is virtually secured by the fact that we got (by “we”, I mean TSO) the Army Times to call him Ballduster McSoulpatch.

    That alone should win us a MILbloggie this year. Um, yes, this is a shameless plea for votes – well, if anyone can figure out how to vote.

  • Thoughts on CPAC

    If you missed CPAC in DC last weekend, here’s a photo essay from John Hawkins at Right Wing News. I’ve never been to CPAC, but I’ve always gotten updates from my buddy Skye who has been the last three years running.

    But I guess the big news this year was Ron Paul winning the straw poll. Actually, that’s no surprise – since Paul was one of 11 candidates in the poll. What the media isn’t saying is that 69% of the 2000 voters in the straw poll voted against Ron Paul. Judging by the jeers when the winner of the poll was announced, Paul would run right of town if he were the nominee.

    Yeah, yeah, I agree with Ron Paul on much of his domestic policy, but he’s a nutbag on foreign policy. Since the media has been successful on focusing on domestic policy the last several months, in conjunction with the White House, it’s no wonder that a large number of Conservatives would ignore Paul’s foreign policy and vote for his domestic policy.

    And did I mention that Ron Paul supports IVAW’s Adam Kokesh for Congress in New Mexico?

    I guess if you’re voting and it’s not going to count, you might as well vote for Paul – especially if your intention is to just rock the conservatives a bit and get them focused on domestic policy. But I think most conservatives, who aren’t single issue voters, wouldn’t vote for Paul in a primary. What did he pull in the 2008 race? Less than 1% of voters, despite the squirrely Paulian’s claim that he pulled more but the media wouldn’t report it.

    Speaking of Skye, it looks like she busted Medea Benjamin and Tyge Barry trying to interupt Glen Beck’s speech at CPAC. Also posted at Flopping Aces.

  • USA Today on How Vets Feel About The Hurt Locker

    USA Today has run an article that discusses how many veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan have different opinions on the accuracy and quality of the movie The Hurt Locker. The author of article, Gregg Zoroya, does an excellent job of gauging veterans’ responses to the movie, presenting an array of opinions including those of Army of Dude and Bouhammer, who are both quoted in the article. I highly encourage you all to read the article, it is one of the few times the MSM has done a good job of reporting on how vets feel about a particular issue (albeit not a very important one).

    I personally enjoyed The Hurt Locker and thought it got a lot of things right about Americans in Iraq. In particular, I enjoyed how the movie mostly stayed out of the politics and how the insurgents were portrayed for exactly what they are: a bunch of savages who don’t care who they harm or kill in their strive to attain their goals. I felt that generally EOD’s mission was properly portrayed (a couple ridiculous adventures notwithstadning) and the opening scene in my opinion was a dead-on accurate depiction of how an EOD mission usually works.

    Of course there were many technical errors (involving everything from uniforms to rank) and ridiculous side-stories that involved EOD doing everything from helping private military contractors kill a sniper to the EOD team leader running alone through the streets of Baghdad at night. But you got to remember that this is a Hollywood movie, and there will always be a dramatic license taken with war movies.

    Overall, compared to the other trash that has come about Iraq, the Hurt Locker is a good war movie and the first real decent portrayal of Americans in Iraq by Hollywood.

  • About that jockstrap…

    jockstrap

    The local news station, which will remain nameless, since they don’t want to mention us, discovered that the reason Michael McManus is wearing a bandage on his pointy noggin is because he had a panic attack when the feds came to arrest his pathetic ass;

    His attorney says McManus’ head was bandaged today because he had suffered a panic attack, but gave no more information. If he is convicted on charges of stolen valor, McManus could be sentenced to up to a year in federal prison.

    In related news, one of our diligent readers wrote that she commented on nearly every Old Media website which mentioned McManus and she chastised the Old Media outlets for not crediting the milblogs for the take down. She claims that every one of her comments were removed. As TSO said, he spoonfed that reporter for weeks until he finally summoned the testicular fortitude to knock on big, bad McManus’ door.

    You’re welcome, fuckstick. Advice for the next time you come to the milblogs for help; pound sand, stickboy. Practice writing obituaries and police blotters.

  • TSO Update

    Caroline writes to tell us that this is why TSO isn’t posting lately. She says he’s recovering. Somehow, I don’t doubt it after hearing about some of his boredom-fighting techniques in Afghanistan.

    Probably not safe for most work places

  • Why I hate DC

    Most of you probably know that I left the Metro DC area last month to the tranquil mountains of West Virginia. Jim Treacher illustrates one of the main reasons I left;

    Sometime between 7 and 7:30, not long after I got home from work, I walked to the CVS on 22nd and M to get some bread, milk, and a SmartTrip card. I was right across the street from the CVS, and I waited for the crosswalk light to tell me to go before I crossed. I had plenty of time left, according to the countdown clock. I was more than halfway there when a black SUV made an illegal left turn and hit me head-on.

    I can’t count the number of times I’ve been hit or nearly hit by a car during the 10 years I lived in DC – each time I was in the crosswalk while I had the right of way. The problem? Arrogance. In order to survive in DC, no matter where you are, or what you do for a living, you have to accept the fact that you’re the least important person in the city. Even the bums are more important than you. Everyone has rights that supersede your rights.

    Every morning, I had to cross at a crosswalk from the a driver’s right – the driver, of course, was looking left for an opportunity to enter traffic and none of those drivers ever saw me because they were too focused on getting into traffic. Almost every morning, I was struck or nearly struck. Finally, I had to jaywalk to avoid getting hit.

    Arrogance.

    I used to ride my bicycle to work, until it was too dangerous. If I wasn’t dodging cars and buses, I was fleeing from gangs of muggers. Yes, muggers would dash out from the sidewalk and try to knock me off my bike.

    Do you think I could interest the police? Nope. I was mugged by a group of teens one time in the subway station. Under surveillance cameras. When I brought the incident to the station master’s attention, he reviewed the camera footage and declared that it was my fault and wouldn’t call the police.

    I could go on about the people who sued me because my dog bit their dog, or the time I was attacked on the street while several cops stood a few feet away watching, but lunch time is almost over.

    I guess my main point is that DC is filled with childish, ignorant buffoons who complain about conditions in their city and then spend their time making it worse.

    And Treacher?

    One last thing: I’m told by multiple people that the SUV that hit me was Secret Service.

    Good luck getting that sorted, out, Jim. I was hit by a goofball who worked for the Homeland Security Department once – I couldn’t even get a call back.
