  • New heights of ridiculous PC

    Tman sends us a link to an article out of Salt Lake City about a school who won’t let their students name their sports teams “Cougars” because it might offend middle-aged women who prey on younger men;

Still, the Canyons School Board refused to accept the Cougar as a mascot out of fear that it might offend older women. In the current edition of the Webster Dictionary, the second definition for cougar sights a slang terminology that refers to “a middle-aged woman seeking a romantic relationship with a younger man.”

To say that the board’s reaction to having a school play as the Cougars was a bit over the top is certainly an understatement, particularly when one considers the fact that BYU and a host of other high schools in Utah use the Cougar as their mascot.

Well, then the whole problem, as I see it, is Webster’s dictionary for defining the word as such. I’m pretty sure that there are younger female cougars, the animals, who are offended that they’re being lumped in older females of the human species. We shouldn’t be offending the animal world with our words. I’m sure they’d rather be compared to a winning football team than woman trolling bars for a cub to take home.

  • Some late night Stolen Valor entertainment

BooRadley dropped off this link to ABC’s “Last Man Standing” episode this week which was about Stolen Valor. The Stolen Valor part starts at about 15 minutes into the show with a guy claiming to be a SEAL with an M1 tank.

I know we neglected you guys today and I’m sorry. I was at Bethesda’s Walter Reed National Military Medical center today for my last eye appointment related to cataract surgery. I’m seeing much better, as my writing probably reflects.

The Doctor said my eyes are 20/30 without glasses. I’m without glasses for the first time since I was 7 years old. If there’s anyone out there contemplating the surgery, I’d urge you to get it. I went in at 7:30 am and I was at IHOP eating breakfast by 10 am. It’s absolutely painless. The hardest part about it is reaching for my glasses first thing in the morning that aren’t there after 49 years.

And the doctors at the new hospital are the absolute best. The new hospital at Fort Belvoir is world class. I’m glad to see that most of the dregs who populated the old Walter Reed are gone. The staffs in the clinics seem to actually help patients rather than make your life difficult. The new one at Bethesda is squared away, too. They have folks at every intersection of the hallways to guide you to your destination. In fact, I got my surgery so quickly because one of the receptionists called in a favor with the doctor to get me squeezed into his schedule.

  • “Boom Goes the Dynamite” guy joins the Army

TSO reports that the “Boom Goes the Dynamite” Guy, Brian Collins, just joined the Army in the Military Intelligence career field.

I know it’s hard to believe that he’s not continuing his news casting career. I saw him get a “Web Redemption” on Tosh.0 last week and he said that was the only sportscasting gig he ever had. Another unbelievable factoid, huh?

I guess the news is still on it’s Christmas vacation so this the kind of shit you get.

  • Merry Christmas

Over the river and through the woods to my daughter’s apartment we go, the GPS knows the way to guide the Chevrolet through the significant absence of snow. (Apologies to Lydia Maria Child)

I hope your Christmas is the day you most want to remember this year. Thank you for your continued patronage at TAH, and thank you for taking time out of your busy Christmas Day to stop by. But I’m on the road (see above) to spend the day with part of my family (which is spread out from Korea to Holland this year).

    And, oh, Happy Birthday, Jesus.

  • Friends don’t let Friends plank (it planks to be you.)

It seems that the person above was given a three hundred dollar fine and free public humiliation for a planking spree according to the police. I am sure that the Police thought that it was a gas when he was laying on top of of a memorial to their own who have fallen in the line of duty.

Judge Steven Olson fined Hart $303 for his escapades, which were photographed by his brother Ryan, who himself faces a disorderly conduct trial next week.

Ryan Hart apparently upset police by lying across a police memorial monument in front of the county jail.

So just remember, just say no to planking.

  • Assistance requested with a Wilki project.

Over the past few months I have been updated and editing Wikipedia. A few months ago on Wikipedia Commons the National Archives and Records Administration has donated over ten thousand documents, photos and other records. The only problem is that they need help to make these records usable.

Starting in July 2011, the US National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is undertaking a major contribution of tens of thousands of files to Commons.

NARA is an independent agency of the United States government charged with preserving and documenting government and historical records and with increasing public access to those documents, which comprise the National Archives. NARA is officially responsible for maintaining and publishing the legally authentic and authoritative copies of acts of Congress, presidential proclamations and executive orders, and federal regulations.

This project organizes Commons’ efforts to accept and deal with such a large contribution of files. Files will be uploaded from US National Archives bot, operated by Dominic (see upload feed). The Commons effort is three-pronged:

    Categorization of all images
    Organization of images
    Improvement and restoration of images

So if anyone here regular or not has a account on Wikipedia could help me with this project I would be most grateful. Here is a example of of what these documents are. If these are not set up then it will be much harder for people to know about them.

  • OWS: Veterans are all Tim McVeighs and Terry Nichols now.

Yea this pissed me off when someone on my Facebook was crying about the people that got removed in LA and Philadelphia, posted this.

Yea that smiley face makes me warm all over. Totally makes up for the face that your comparing me to the people involved with the Oklahoma bombing in 1995. The one that gets brought out for the crazy Veteran meme comes out. Totally digging it. To make it worse it is coming from someone who has served as well. Way to keep it classy.
