  • Introduction

    Hello all,

My name is Operator Dan and Jonn has given me the opportunity to post on TAH. I am an infantry Marine (0311) who recently EAS’ed (ETS for you all in the Army) from the Corps. I spent the first two and a half years of my enlistment as part of the Marine Security Company at Camp David. Following my time there, I served as a team leader and vehicle commander in 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines and deployed to Iraq. I am currently waiting to start school at Arizona State where I am planning on majoring in history and drinking PBR.

I have been a longtime reader and fan of this blog and I look forward to 1.) proving that a Marine grunt can read and write and 2.) proving that a Marine grunt can use a computer.

    S/F,

    OD

  • Gator Alley

I’m afraid I’m inundated with stuff this week. My son gets back from Afghanistan tomorrow night, end of the year work has piled up, and moving This Ain’t Hell Headquarters to the remote mountainous retreat for contingency operations happens next Monday.

If there’s anyone out there who wants try their hand at blogging, email me (check the “Contact us” page) and I’ll give you a shot at it.

COB6 promised he’d be back to blogging this week, too.

  • The only Christmas present I need

    technorati-rating

For the uninitiated, that means 601 other blogs link here and we’re rated 1115 out of more than a million others. That’s more three times the number that linked here last year.

Thanks to all of you who make this the best job and the worst pay I’ve ever had. ALL of you, even the nutty ones – having you to cuss at makes all of this worthwhile.

I hope your Christmas is as full of joy as mine – I’ll be spending the day with my grandson having riveting discussions about trucks, cars and other trucks.

The last I heard from TSO, Caroline was driving him out into the Texas desert claiming she was lost – I haven’t heard from him since. So keep your eyes on Fox News for further developments.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

  • Concrete Bob news

    Tea Party 058

In case you haven’t heard (I found out from Uncle Jimbo at Blackfive), Concrete Bob, one of our best buddies (he’s been known to drive me home in varying stages of consciousness) was in the hospital the other night and scheduled to go back next week for some minor adjustments. Keep him in your thoughts this weekend.

No, Bob, it’s not just because of the barbecue sauce. Rock on, buddy.

Tankerbabe is calling the family every two minutes to check on him and she’s says he’s resting – but I can’t imagine it.

  • TAH on BBC today

For some reason, BBC has decided to use me as a foil again on their World Have Your Say program that begins at 1pm Eastern today. The subject is Netanyahu’s call for changing the “rules of war”.

I have no idea what I’m up against – but it ought to be fun.

You can listen along at the BBC World Service website. or I’ll try to get a copy of the podcast and drop it here later.

Added: Sounds like I’ll be on after 1:30.

    Added again: Or maybe not.

  • Trouble with your VA Ed benefit check?

TSO just got an email that some of you veteran students who got your stop-gap education benefit check might be having trouble cashing the damn things. The VA says you can cash them problem free at US Bank and Bank of America without them holding your money until funds are made available.

  • Our 3rd Anniversary

    dbs-cartoon

It was three years ago today that I got booted from the forums at Right Nation for being a jerk to a leftist. After being banned from the History Channel forums no less than 40 times, I decided to create a place from which I couldn’t be banned or put on stupid probation. Welcome to that place.

It took me five days to buy the website and figure out how to drive this thing.

Three years of endless blather, 980,000 visits and 24,000 comments later, the only thing I’ve learned is that you like racy pictures of Angie Harmon.

The title of the blog comes from my proximity to DC, but it was taken from the title of a book about the Desert Storm Gulf War. The actual phrase was what a young sergeant in the 1st Cav Division told a reporter as they looked across the Saudi border into Iraq a few nights before the ground portion of the war began.

It still amazes me that a few thousand people actually take time out of their day to read what we write. Some are so interested in what we have to say, they send us tips. Heh. Who would have thunk it.

Thanks for the ride…may it never end.

  • TAH on the airwaves

I got a call this morning from the BBC asking for an interview on the New York Times journalist who was rescued by British commandos this morning. So if you’re listening to their World Have Your Say radio program at about 1:30 Eastern Time, I’ll be locked in a debate with a chap from The Guardian on the subject Should soldiers risk their lives for journalists?

    Guess which side I’m on.

Added: I guess Uncle Jimbo will be on the program, too. Listen here live at about 1:30 Eastern.
