Prosecutors say a Georgia woman who pleaded guilty to mailing a secret U.S. report to a news organization faces the “longest sentence” ever for a federal crime involving leaks to the media.
Ex-National Security Agency contractor Reality Winner is scheduled for sentencing Aug. 23 by a federal judge in Augusta. She pleaded guilty in June.
Winner’s plea deal calls for a prison sentence of five years and three months. The judge isn’t bound by that agreement, and the charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years.
Prosecutors said in a court filing Tuesday their recommended sentence is stiffer than punishments in prior leak cases.
Winner’s arrest last year was announced the same day The Intercept published a story on a classified NSA report on Russian hackers and the 2016 election. She is a former Air Force linguist who speaks Arabic and Farsi and had a top-secret security clearance.

Guess I should check to see if my fundamental right to my TS clearance has been violated, even though it has been over 40 years since there was any reason to have it.
I retired from Brink’s back in 2007, so now I will demand that they give me back my id card, S&W 4046 .40, uniforms and the codes for the ATM machines and combinations from the customers safes.
I’m still shocked they allow these people to retain them! I got the letter within a week of ETS-ing that my clearance was being withdrawn.
I get that it helps to have them cleared to look at cases they were working before leaving, being able to be read into new/current cases to give advice to the next guy, etc.
The problem I have with that is when you’ve got a guy with a TS/SC clearance like that working as a writer, political commentator, etc. Clearly they are profiting personally off their potential for access to TS information. This is totally anathema to a secure system.
This is like when Missouri outlawed people using food stamps to buy liquor, cigarettes, lottery tickets, and tattoos. WHY IN GOD’S GREEN EARTH WAS THAT EVER LEGAL?!?! Same thing here, why do people indefinitely retain such clearances when they aren’t ever going to work in government again? Especially when they’ve been caught lying to congress, the courts, and the American people and have been fired for that.
Security clearances have a shelf life. I think they had to be renewed after eight years, and when I thought mine was going to expire prior to my ets, I was informed they were good for ten years now. I could be wrong.
Top Secret: 5 years
Secret: 10 years
Confidential: 15 years
There is no need for them to retain that access to classified material. Should the new guy need a classified briefing from the old guy, they could easily bring him or her in, read them back in, make them sign another nondisclosure agreement, have the meeting then debrief them again. There is NO need for standing access to classified for people not needing it on a regular basis to do their jobs.
I’m hoping Chelsea Manning is not on Reality Winner’s approved visitor list in federal prison. Chelsea may conspire with Reality to pursue gender transition on the federal dime then a presidential commutation of her “longest sentence” ever for leaks to the media.

The concept of a prison serving the dual purpose of punishment and training to re-integrate into society seems long lost as we have decided that prison for profit is a good thing.
Once we as a society decided prisoners were a commodity that created a profit center it was clear we would need a continuing stream of revenue to maintain profitability. It’s not surprising as a consequence that rehabilitation is no longer a concern and no one cares about recidivism because they make money off of recidivism.
