Weekend Open Thread

This application allows you to comment despite comment non-availability. (GAB/r/The_Donald)

In a previous blog post talking about changing the algorithms for searches… And search companies trying to silence the conservatives… Someone asked a question. What are the conservatives doing about this? One answer is “GAB”. Its “dissenter” ap creates a comments page throughout the Internet. So, even if comments are not on, you would still have the ability to comment. Enjoy your weekend.

      1. Well played my Brother and Rats of the Cong be unto you. My Crown from my bloody but unbowed head. I have noticed the response time from the touchpad on this Chromie Book seems to lag a bity bit. The four in a row from today would have put me in place for the Ace of 5 next week. When I hit that never attained Ace I can dial it back a bit.

        Until then…I’ll be back!

        1. Thanks FA.
Only through challenges do we grow stronger Brother!
Next week I’ll hand over the crown and scepter. Until then, BOW SERFS!

          Have a great weekend yall!
          Work your preps, please.

      1. ninja, even a blind butter bar can find his butt with a flashlight and two hands every now and again.

  1. Uh oh … it looks as if KoB’s four-peat won’t happen this week. This has the possibility of escalating to a DefCon 3 situation, so I’ll just put this week’s trivia here and back away quietly.

    DID YOU KNOW…?
Did Popeye the Sailor really exist? And what was the story behind the villain Bluto?
    By Commissioner Wretched

Yes, winter will be coming to an end.

No, it won’t matter what that silly groundhog saw.

Whether the groundhog in Pennsylvania (or Georgia or anywhere else) saw his shadow Sunday, we still have six more weeks of winter.

It’s a calendar thing, see, not a rodent weather bureau thing. We will be enjoying (!) winter until the Spring Equinox, on March 19th.

So whatever that groundhog saw or didn’t see, depending on where you are when you read this, we have six more weeks of winter.

As an aside, I have a very dear friend whose birthday is also on Groundhog Day.
    If you’
re smart, you won’t ask her if she saw her shadow on her birthday.

But I’m certain that you’ll like what you read next … this week’s trivia! It’ll make the first of the next six weeks go faster, I promise.

    Did you know …

… the average American eats 263 eggs per year? (Not all at the same time, I hope.)

… there is a weight limit for donating your body to science? (I notice they don’t say whether it’s an upper or lower limit. I still have a chance.)

… the treadmill is based on an old prison torture device? In 1818, the “everlasting staircase” was developed for use in prisons. The device consisted of a paddle wheel that was large enough for about 40 or so inmates, all of whom would walk to turn the wheel. While the device was designed to crush the spirits of the inmates, it eventually developed into the modern exercise treadmill. (Trust me, it’s still a torture device.)

… the popular food dish, buffalo wings, was really invented in Buffalo, New York? The dish was created in 1964 at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo. Teressa Bellissimo (1901-1985) created the dish in 1964. Originally made of chicken wings deep fried and doused with hot sauce, the official “secret recipe” for the original buffalo wings is closely guarded. According to the story, the wings were a spur-of-the-moment hors d’oeuvre concocted when a group of Catholic young men wanted a snack on a Friday – a day on which church teaching of the time said one could not eat meat. So Bellissimo waited until after midnight to prepare the wings, which the customers could enjoy – and the rest, as they say, is history. (See, this explanation actually makes sense, since we all know buffaloes don’t have wings. They don’t, right?)

… the first Scripps National Spelling Bee was held in 1925? The winner was Frank Neuhauser (1913-2011), who went on to become a patent lawyer. The winning word was “gladiolus.” As part of his prize for winning, Neuhauser was introduced to then-President Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933). (No word on whether Frank was impressed with Silent Cal or not.)

… Popeye the Sailor really existed? Well, the inspiration for the famous spinach-eating sailor did, anyway. Frank “Rocky” Fiegel (1868-1947) was a retired sailor living in Chester, Illinois, who smoked a pipe and had a slightly deformed eye after having been in a few too many bar fights. Cartoonist Elzie C. Segar (1894-1938), the creator of a popular comic strip called “Thimble Theater,” added a character in 1929 named Popeye the Sailor, and based his physical description on that of Fiegel. Segar was also from Chester and had known Fiegel while growing up. Existing photographs of Fiegel show the clear inspiration Segar used for the character of Popeye, and an engraving of the early depiction of Popeye is on Fiegel’s gravestone in Chester.

… and speaking of Popeye, the famous bearded villain of the Popeye cartoons, Bluto, only made one appearance in the original comic strips? The comic strip was originally known as “Thimble Theater,” but after the introduction of Popeye the Sailor in 1929 the focus of the strip changed radically. Originally, Bluto – the big, bearded bad guy – was introduced in the September 12, 1932 strip and was featured in the next few days’ story. He was never seen again in the original Segar strips, but in 1933 became the main antagonist of the cartoons produced by Paramount Pictures’ Fleischer Studios for movie audiences. Additional trivia note: When Popeye cartoons were later made specifically for television, the villain’s name was changed to Brutus because King Features Syndicate wrongly believed the old name, Bluto, was copyrighted by Paramount Pictures. Because the character had been created for the comics – which were distributed by King Features – the syndicate actually owned the name but didn’t realize it. In the modern Popeye comic strip, Bluto and Brutus are twin brothers, despite having originally been two names for the same character. (And there it is, folks, everything you’d ever want to know about Popeye. Blow me down!)

… the musical duo of Sonny and Cher was originally known by another name? Salvatore “Sonny” Bono (1935-1998) and his then-wife Cher (born Cherilyn Sarkisian, 1946) originally performed their music under the name Cleo and Caesar. (And the beat goes on.)

… the guillotine was still the official method of execution in France until 1981? It was only retired because France officially abolished the death penalty that year.

… it is the year 109 in North Korea? The reason it isn’t 2020 is because the country’s calendar is based on the birth of its founder, Kim Il Sung (1912-1994). (You know, that explains a lot …)

    Now … you know!

    1. As an aside, I have a very dear friend whose birthday is also on Groundhog Day.
If you’ re smart, you won’t ask her if she saw her shadow on her birthday.

Groundhog Day is also “Candlemas”, or “Presentation of our Lord”. It’s when Jesus would’ve been presented to the Temple, along with doves/turtledoves. It’s also the informal “40th day of Christmas”. Since its also Mardi Gras season, she could add a king cake to her birthday menu.

      1. “If you’ re smart, you won’t ask her if she saw her shadow on her birthday.”

I’m thinking thebesig, that question is right up there with asking a woman “how old are you” or “soooo, how much do you weigh”..

        Thanks for the laugh!

        Congrats to the “Dog”. (smile)

    2. Oddly enough, I was looking for canned spinach at the grocery yesterday. No could find.
Is it still a thing and/or am I stupid?

    3. CW:

Reference the origin of Buffalo Chicken Wings:

One of these days, SOMEONE is gonna come up with a great idea of cooking and selling the Pope’s Nose from either a Chicken, Turkey or Duck.

Any takers? KoB? AW1Ed? Ex-PH2? Graybeard? Skyjumper?

    4. It’s moved from being a torture device to being a very expensive clothes hanger.
And the exercise bike a lingerie hanger or sex machine with the Peloton being for the voyeurs…

    1. If they’re going to teach it that way then when they get to Civil War they should focus on the fact Itgat more than half a million Americans, overwhelmingly white, died to end slavery over a 4-5 year period.

And highlight the fact the Brits threw in with the Southerners. Seems they weren’t too squeamish about slavery when they had a chance to get the colonies back.

      1. Read this drivel earlier, had to walk away and get my blood pressure back down. It’s bad enough that they don’t hardly teach history and when they do it is error filled. Even the article is full of errors. At least the article writer got the person to admit that this whole story was to get the conversation on repatriations started. As if, as penguinman pointed out, nearly a million Americans died in a war started by politicians, and trillions of dollars in welfare payments has not been repatriations enough.

And God forbid, we mention that one of the FIRST slave holders in Jamestown was a black man. And don’t even get me started on the black chieftains that sold blacks to the Arabs (for centuries) who in turn sold these blacks to the Portuguese, French, Spanish, Dutch, English, and the Asians. Chinese law forbade any black being brought into China unless they had been castrated. And btw, the black on black slave trade is still ongoing as we speak. And the Arabs are neck deep into it.

If you going to talk about the slave trade, let’s talk about all of the slave trade history.

  2. The latest Red Dawn progress for those interested.

    https://www.deviantart.com/yt45

The halftrack finally has its TOW launcher. The tank crew have cavalry patches on their sleeves—I know they shouldn’t be full color, but nobody seems to make subdued-color decals in 1/35 scale, so I went with what was available.

    1. Looking good TOW. I’m enjoying the progress of your project. Look forward to the updates each week. It’s obvious that this is a labor of love. I wouldn’t worry too much about the color on the patches, after all, doesn’t this depict militiamen making do with what they could get from old stocks? Anybody that bitches we can just ask them what their diorama looks like. Stitch nazis gonna stitch.

      Tanks Troop!

    2. TOW launcher??
Is that something Mrs. TOW uses to launch your azz when you get to her pissing her off?? (grin)

I have been following your pictures with your models & dioramas, TOW. Excellent detail and workmanship! Please keep them coming.

    3. One slight comment, TOW.
You reeeeaaaally need to attach the arm holding the grease gun (lying on the ground) to the black tanker dude. (smile)

      1. It’s attached. That’s an earlier photo. All figures are now assembled, with personal weapons and slings for same. The halftrack still needs its doors, and I think I’ll stack the spare TOW rounds on one of the rear racks.

Any suggestions on a good name for the tank? I’m kinda leaning towards “Knight Rider,” but haven’t decided yet.

        1. I donno TOW. Knight Rider sounds kinda medieval. It does have a gun on top. Maybe Mick has an idea.

          1. I looked it up and confirmed that the show was airing prior to the (fictional) invasion, so it seemed like a good 80s thing.

Still open to other suggestions, though.

          2. Uh, Oh…

KoB has stirred up the Hornets Nest with Mick.

KoB is now on the Highway to the Danger Zone…

            😎😉

            1. The Stranger:

There’s a reason why 5th/77th FA is called “The KING of BATTLE”.

              KA-BOOM!

              😉

              1. AW1Ed already has tickets to part 2. Just waiting for the right time to ask Mick if he’ll go with him. Oops, done let the feline out of the sack.

                  1. Aaaaaaaggggghhhhh!

                    You guys are killin’ me.

                    No TOP GUN! Enough already.

Mentioning TOP GUN on these pages is a capital offense-level TAH ROE violation.

                    Or should be.

                    1. But, Mick, NONE of us ever mentioned the TG Word…not even KoB or even little ole me…

                      *grin*

                    2. If you had a stack of guns that weren’t lost in that epic boat accident, what would the uppermost gun be called?

          3. Name for a tank?

Hmmmmmm; let me think about that for a moment.

            Hey; I know!

As a retired Marine Corps Aviator, I’d say that TOW should paint a large white bullseye on top of the turret, and name the tank “Target”.

            Heh heh heh.

            1. That is a good one, Mick.

But now that I think about it, how about naming the Tank “TANK”.

              Or “Tank A Lot”.

              Short, sweet, simple and unforgettable.

Thank You, TOW, for sharing your work. Great Job!

        2. …as long as you don’t have one of the crew members painted up to look like David Hasselhoff, sounds good to go. (grin)

  3. Hi you fucking fucks.
I was just watching Stranger’s video in the Fat Fucking Fred Fucking Enema Emmart fuckbucket toadstool fido felating fuckbucket, from Fucking Cee Fucking Lo, Green with Daryl Fucking Hall and band in the fucking home studio with their rendition of Fuck You that so warmed my fucking heart.
    So with that fucking said….

    HERE!!

    Have a lovely fucking weekend.

  4. For all you railfans on here, this could very well be a new beginning for steam in the United States. I have been following this group’s progress for a while now and they are doing an awesome job so far and they picked probably one of the most complex locomotives to build. Hey are currently working on the boiler. https://www.facebook.com/t1locomotive/

    1. I’ve seen this before. The Pennsylvania Railroad T1 duplex locomotive! Allegedly, the fastest steam locomotives ever built. Supposedly the engineers would exceed 140 mph when trying to make up time. Incredible machines!

    2. Yeah, it’s good and Complex but the Union Pacific Railroad took the title in restoring a copy of THE biggest Steam Locomotive built, a 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement while the T1 is a 4-4-4-4, but it’s been said that in their heyday a T1 could get a train up to triple digit speed in no time at all!

      1. Damned if Sheldon Cooper and the bruised brain guy that worked for UPS till a box fell on his head done showed up here.

Bernasty took an express to hell and Epstein was never trained to hang himself.

      2. Yeah, but this isn’t a restoration of an existing locomotive. All of the original T1’s were scrapped. This is building a brand-new one from the original plans. I think this project has been going on for over 10 years. I’m curious to see if they try to actually set an official record for fastest steam locomotive. I believe a French locomotive currently holds that record although unconfirmed reports are that the T1’s regularly exceeded that record velocity on the western part of the PRR (Fort Wayne division) when running passenger trains to Chicago. Plus, this is being done by a private entity with no support from Norfolk Southern (PRR successor, sort of) or their shop forces. UP rebuilt that Big Boy, which is cool, but they have more resources at their disposal.

      1. Ah, so the fuckwit isn’t new, just ‘reinventing’ himself in a pathetic attempt to stay relevant.

    1. He should reach out to Jesse MacBeth, he can give this guy some tips on how to be the darling of the media for a few days until his story gets debunked.

Speaking of which, has Jesse done anything newsworthy lately? It’s probably been over ten years since his Judge Judy appearance.

      1. Hack:

Ole Jesse wrote a book in 2019 titled “The One That Love Forgot: The Jesse MacBeth Story”:

        https://www.amazon.com/One-That-Love-Forgot-MacBeth/dp/149742870X

        “Product description”

“I, the ugly black kid, unwanted by an unknown father, sold for crack by a drug addicted mother. I, the ugly black orphan who wept for love, yet no one cared. Who cried tears of blood that stained my soul with its pain. I, the ugly black orphan. The one who was raped and beat by the ones who claimed to love. The black boy who the government told “No one will adopt an ugly black kid so learn to act white.” The boy who thought nigger was his name. The boy who cut his wrist and begged Allah every night to die. The child who hung himself with no one to weep for him. I, the ugly black man who cries for the boy whose childhood was lost. His innocence stolen by every thrust of his abusers. I, the man who love forgot still bleeds from a past that has never healed.”

  5. Not a bad week at all, President Trump was acquitted, another terrorist kingpin got whacked, and the president knocked it out of the park with his SOTU Address and made the D-rats look like the classless shit they are. Think about it this way, like him or not, President Trump forced the D-rats in Congress to be present when the FLOTUS put the Presidential Medal of Freedom around Rush Limbaugh’s neck and given how liberals hate him, I bet that made many a head explode!

    1. API:

      Here’s another one!

“Impeachment Witness Vindman To Leave National Security Council After Trump Acquittal”

      https://www.foxnews.com/politics/vindman-to-leave-nsc-after-trump-acquittal

“LT Col. Alexander Vindman is leaving his post at the National Security Council, Fox News confirmed Friday.”

“The timeline of Vindman’s departure is unclear. Vindman was apparently planning to leave his post at the end of the month, but his exit could come sooner.”

  6. Pete Buttigieg surging in polls relative to other primary contenders:

Former South Bend, Ind., mayor Pete Buttigieg, building on his strong showing in the Iowa caucuses, continued his surge among likely Democratic New Hampshire presidential primary voters, putting him and Senator Bernie Sanders in a statistical dead heat in a Boston Globe/WBZ-TV/Suffolk University poll released Thursday night.

Former vice president Joe Biden, whose campaign is stumbling after a disappointing fourth-place finish in Iowa, saw another modest dip in his numbers. That put him in fourth place behind Senator Elizabeth Warren in Thursday’s poll, the fourth of seven the Suffolk University Political Research Center is conducting in the run-up to the nation’s first primary on Tuesday.

    1. I was hoping his next (and terminal) billet would be CFC coordinator for Camp Swampy…

  8. Bet KKK Boy AKA Ole Ralphie Boy AKA Doofus is gloating.

One of these days, when Zombies attack his home, he is gonna regret what he started (on second thought, they probably would not have any interest in him since he lacks a Brain and Gonads):

“Virginia Advances Gun Control Bills That Ban Sale Of Some Semi-Automatics, Possession Of High-Capacity Magazines

    https://www.foxnews.com/us/virginia-advances-gun-control-bill-that-bans-sale-of-some-semi-automatic-weapons-high-capacity-magazines

“Despite overwhelming opposition from gun owners and gun rights groups, Virginia Democratic lawmakers on Friday advanced legislation that would ban the sale of some semiautomatic firearms as well as end the possession of high-capacity magazines.”

“Gun supporters packed a state House committee room and shouted in protest when legislation to ban the sale of assault weapons like AR-15 style-rifles, prohibit the possession of silencers as well as magazines that hold more than 12 rounds, passed out of committee. The uproar caused Capitol Police to clear the committee room of almost every spectator following the vote.”

“Virginia has been ground zero for the country’s heated debate over gun control.”

    1. Now that Virginia has passed legislation to protect “the children” from gun violence, they can get back to the business of expanding abortion rights.

    2. This is not going to end well. I wouldn’t go dancing on a group’s last nerve especially when they are already ticked.

  9. Hack Stone had to endure yet another round of government mandated training today. Surprise surprise, he found one articular computer based course that literally made him laugh out loud. Fortunately, he was able to find the amusing clip on Al Gore’s Amazing Inter net.

  10. James Carville:”..it’s like we’re losing our damn minds.”

“We just had an election in 2018. We did great. We talked about everything we needed to talk about and we won,” he said in a Vox interview published on Friday. “And now it’s like we’re losing our damn minds. Someone’s got to step their game up here.”

Carville added that he considered himself a “liberal” rather than a centrist — but Democrats went too far even for him.

“They’ve tacked off the damn radar screen,” he said when asked if the party moved too far left.

His comments came just after another interview in which he said he was “scared to death” after Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., netted a large portion of the vote in Iowa’s caucuses.

  11. TSA Agent tricks a woman into showing her breasts:

The woman said Lomeli told her he had to make sure she still had nothing in her bra, requiring her to lift her shirt “to show me your full breasts.” He also again looked down her pants, she said, before telling her she was free to go and adding that she had nice breasts.

He was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail and was expected to make an initial appearance Friday in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

  12. Picked up a new 2020 Hyundai Sonata Limited last weekend and learning how to use all the “bells and whistles” that the car has. For example, there are three different ways to get in the car (key fob, smartphone and an electronic card) and I can send a key electronically to someone so they can drive the car.

One neat feature is “Smart Park” – it’s a trip to use (already tried it twice):

  13. Late to Muster, again.
    But I’m retired, so…..

Working on upgrading the home firing range with a platform to stand on (been standing on the gully floor – good practice for uneven ground during combat, but not cool for teaching grandkids).

Next step is construction of the firing bench. All materials at hand.

Keeping WW and Ex-PH2 in our prayers and looking forward to some good reports from both fronts soon.

Have a great weekend, Weeds and Weedettes!

  14. The Latest. Wonder if he will receive a Less-Than-Stellar OER?

“Impeachment Witness Vindman Fired, Escorted Out of White House After Trump Acquittal”

    https://www.foxnews.com/politics/vindman-to-leave-nsc-after-trump-acquittal

“LTC Alexander Vindman, who made waves as a witness during the Trump impeachment proceedings, was fired Friday by the National Security Council and escorted off of the White House grounds.”

“Vindman was on detail to the National Security Council from the Department of Defense, and it is expected he will return there. It comes just two days after President Trump was acquitted in the Senate on the impeachment charges brought by the House last year over his dealings with Ukraine.”

    1. Anybody not see this coming? Do they have a shortage coffee fetchers at the puzzle palace or is there a dire need for a new CO of the mess kit repair battalion?

    2. Yeah, no way he makes bird col regardless of OER. Even if the 0-6 board selects him for promotion, Pres Trump sure as hell won’t send his name to the Senate. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving guy. Should be retired as a 2LT – not LTC.

    3. Vindman may bet one of the first LTC’s to retire with a Certificate of Achievement as opposed to a Legion of Merit.

I am sure he will get a gig on MSNBC or CNN,

President Trump may have done him a favor in the long run.

      1. He’ll be able to cash in on trashing Trump and Republicans non-stop like Malcolm Nance, while using his bona fides of “retired military intelligence”. Hell Nance has made a career out of being an ignorant, lying ass.

    4. He wasn’t fired, he was reassigned. Happens all the time in the Army. That is why they call our jobs “assignments.” They are both lucky they are merely going back to the pentagon instead of to someplace in the Arctic Circle.

    5. Allegedly these were actual NCOER/OER bullets:
His Soldiers would follow him anywhere, but only out of curiosity.
Of all the Officers under my command, he certainly is one of them.
I can think of no national emergency that would warrant recalling this Officer to duty (retirement OER)
This Officer should go far, and the sooner he starts, the better.

      1. Don’t know if this is true or not, but saw this one allegedly from a Navy evaluation report:

“Uses my ship to get from port to port, and my sailors to get him from bar to bar”, or something like that.

        1. Saw that one too. I think it was something like “This Medical Officer used my ship to transport his genitals from port to port and my officers to carry him from bar to bar.” His senior rater comment was most likely “Promote ahead of peers.”

      2. I helped type one up:

“X is an adequate soldier, and can usually be relied upon to perform much of his duty with sufficient supervision.”

His mid-level NCO rank was not mentioned other than in the proper box.

        1. Performs adequately when cornered like a rat in a trap.
Consistently fails to live up to own low expectations.
Performed each of his assigned duties to his entire satisfaction.
Performs adequately when supervised by his subordinates.

  15. And back at Casa de Sparky Western annex.

Jeez, throw a few inches of snow on the ground and everyone becomes an even bigger idiot behind the wheel.

  16. It’s been some time since anyone asked, but is Phil Monkress of All Points Logistics working balls this weekend? He must be a great boss to work for since he has (had) employees that will sacrifice their own job, home, savings and reputation to protect Phil from the embarrassment of being exposed as a fake Navy SEAL.

    1. I heard he was. In the Q parking lot behind the security booth between 1400-1700. At least that what I heard…

As to the rest, what a scumbag. Many got tossed under the bus and some willingly went under the bus to protect the lowest form of life…. A Phildo.

  17. And yet another day passes as the False Commander “Phony” Phil Monkress (CEO of All-Points Logistics in headquartered in Merritt Island, FL) avoids queries seeking clarification concerning his Native American, Navy SEAL and Law Enforcement Officer claims.

    1. Really?

Bet the Folks in the Philippines won’t be too happy with that.

BALIKATAN (Exercise) has brought in $$$$ to them.

They haven’t learned as to what happened when we left Clark Air Force Base and Subic Bay?

Be Careful What You Wish For.

  18. Honestly, comments like this kind of irk me. Taken from that Daily Wire article:

“Mark my words: Trump will move further left. We’ll be deeper in debt. The last few remaining conservatives will get voted out (those who remain will be out voted) and more socialist will be voted into government because “capitalism” doesn’t work. All the while people will support “their party” and it will come to pass that that we had a Republic we could not keep.”

So you’re just going to sit there and whimper? You’re going to throw up a white flag and give up fighting because you’re not seeing the results you want right away? If that’s the kind of attitude we’re going to take, then we truly will lose this fight for our country. I would rather continue fighting then wallowing in pity for our country.
