Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, Canadian shooter was being “watched”, too

ottawa-canada

So, it was Michael Zehaf-Bibeau who murdered a Canadian Army reservist, Corporal Nathan Cirillo, while the corporal was guarding the War Memorial in Ottawa today. According to the Chicago Tribune, Mr. Zehaf-Bibeau was a recent convert to Islam and he was being “watched” by US and Canadian authorities;

Authorities did not immediately release details about the suspect in Wednesday’s shooting or his possible motives. But the Globe and Mail newspaper, citing federal sources, said he was Michael Zehef-Bibeau, a man in his early 30s who had recently been designated by the Canadian government as a “high-risk traveler” and had his passport seized.

Two U.S. officials said that U.S. agencies have been advised that the shooter was a Canadian convert to Islam. One of the officials said that the man was from Quebec.

Similarly, the Canadians were “watching” 25-year-old Martin Rouleau who sat outside a veterans’ support center for two hours before he ran down two soldiers on Monday. Canada says that they’re “watching” 90 other people who traveled to the war in Syria and returned. If these attacks sound familiar, you probably read about Mehdi Nemmouche who gunned down some folks at the Brussels Holocaust Museum earlier this year. And there was Carlos Bledsoe back in 2009 who gunned down two soldiers, killing one, in Little Rock at a recruiting station.

In 2012, two French paratroopers were gunned down in Toulouse, France. Then there was Drummer Rigsby who was stabbed to death in England. I’m seeing a pattern here. All of the murderers came back from the various wars in the middle east.

Maybe it’s that the war is following our troops home. We weren’t willing to fight it over there, so now it’s here. It’s a war that must be fought, given the enemy and his 11th century mentality, I guess we chose to fight it here.

This whole reassurance from the government in regards to “watching” these guys when they come back from Syria is starting to ring hollow. Well, with me, anyway. Perhaps it’s time to reconsider our policy of letting them come back. Ample evidence exists to prevent it.

  1. Someone correct me if I’m wrong. I thought if you took up arms against the United States with an enemy, your citizenship could be revoked.

Now I am sure the catch here for Obama and Canada is that we have not “officially declared a war” against ISIS and other terrorist groups. We are just out to “destroy and disrupt” them which technically sounds good but also technically is not a declaration of all out war. That would mean that Obama would have to make a decisive, all balls, stand and actually do something of import and stick to it. That of course would also mean bad news before the mid terms, a hit in the polls, a lowering of his base support, etc. etc. and he CAN’T let significant national security interests get in the way of those far more important issues for HIM. “Screw what’s in America’s best interest” is his philosophy of record.

In that regard, no declared war, then I see what they are trying to stand on by letting these murderers back into our countries. To all of our none, Secret Service protected citizen’s, threat of homeland attacks and death.

Still, makes NO sense to me whatsoever and that making of no sense at all, is in complete keeping with everything Obama has said and done or not done in 6 years.

    1. Sadly, Sparks – that would be a no. The SCOTUS ruled in Afroyim v. Rusk in 1967 to the effect that a natural-born citizen cannot lose US citizenship other than by voluntary renunciation of same.

A naturalized citizen can be denaturalized for a few reasons. Membership in a subversive group within 5 years of naturalization is one grounds for denaturaization.

  2. Do the Gub’mints of the US or Canada do anything BUT watch those goat-molesting inbreds? It appears that the Government is far more concerned about not “offending” anyone than they are about enforcing laws and protecting Citizens!

    1. Well, don’t forget pResident Øbola and his statement that he’ll stand with the Muslims if “the winds shift in an ugly direction”.
I agree, what good does it do to “watch” them, if you watch them commit murder? Why not stay in the office and drink coffee?

      1. I’m sure that B. Hussein 0bama will sneer about it while on his way to either the golf course or his next fundraiser!

  3. Everything I’m seeing indicates Canada is not hesitating to call this a terrorist attack. Obola et. al could learn a thing or two from our mild mannered neighbors to the North.

    1. “Watched” must mean something other than watched. I suspect it means that some of these Muslim clownie boys are on lists, in databases, and, occasionally, have their mug hanging on someone’s bulletin board. And that’s about it.

  4. I just PRAY that our Tomb Guards carry live rounds.
And we have a sniper in an overwatch position.

    siiiiiggghhhhhhhhhh

    1. Ironic. My Citadel roomie from decades ago just called me to ask that question (Tomb Guards locked and loaded). Not that I’d know…I’m a geezer and never served at Arlington.

But anyway, I said my guess is no because we can’t even carry on post etc. I told him I think I always saw DOD police at the Tomb that were probably with bullets.

We’ve had Tomb Guards here. Maybe they can comment, but probably not.

        1. “Increased security” translates to the Terror level has been increased from magenta to puse.

From Wiki; Puce (variant spellings: “puse”, “peuse” or “peuce”) is a dark red or purple brown color,[2] a brownish purple [3][4] or a dark reddish brown.[5]

    2. Ditto.

This episode should be taken as a blatant clue that if they went there, converted before leaving or not, they should NOT be coming back HERE to this continent, period.

  5. RIP Cpl. Cirillo. Someday the people of the west will face reality about the barbarians who killed you.

  6. According to a news report I heard about an hour ago, the Canadian shooter was armed with a 30-30 “deer rifle” – Winchester model 94, Marlin 336, something like that. Probably doesn’t mean a thing but it wasn’t a pistol and it wasn’t an AK. The news report said that those were not restricted in Canada.

Apparently the Canadian guard that was killed was walking a relatively new post – last year or so.

I wonder if they will issue the guards a magazine of ammo? or one round? Or zero?

I expect the Canadian liberals to wail their lamentations, beat their breasts, pull out their hair, and demand that the government withdraw from the Middle East. Or, at least, demand that the Canadian Forces stop guarding War Memorials.

    1. People tend to look down their noses at lever actions, but they are damn near as fast as a semi auto, highly controllable in rapid fire, in pistol calibers carry lots of rounds, and are NOT something you want an enemy to have at moderate ranges. .30-30s nowadays are solid 250 yard deer cartridges.

They weren’t restricted before – after yesterday, in Canada, who knows.

      1. The 30-30 is ballistically equivalent to the Russian 7.62×39 round. 30-30 soft point bullets hit harder than the AK round due to it’s expansion in soft targets. The 30-30 was the first modern rifle round and has been a deer (and Man) killer for well over a hundred years.

  7. Long time reader, first post.
first I respect the mission of TAH but as a member of the great northern vastness of canuckistan I thought I would throw in my 2 cents worth.
I highly doubt that (most) ceremonial post standees are allowed to be ‘effectively’ armed. That would be the preserve of LEO’s and select others.
I am unsure how much many of your are familiar with the parliamentary system versus the U.S. system of separate executive/legislative branches. So a quick primer. The head of gov is the PM s/he is the leader of the party with the most members elected. (I used s/he because we actually have had one female pm).
If the governing party has the most seats in parliament, they can literally pass anything the want by ‘whipping’ their party (forcing them to vote the party line, there is actually a position called ‘the whip’)

Since Harper is conservative and has a majority, I fully expect our govt to take this extremely seriously with ought the waffling seen down there.
We are a nation of laws, and recently passed a law allowing us to revoke citizenship ( granted only of dual nationals) and had apparently revoked passports in both cases.
My personal opinion is that the passport revocation happened to early. It should have happened 5 minutes after their flight left can airspace

    As with many, my thoughts
are with all three soldiers and their families and friends. They have done what I didn’t and i respect everyone who has served honorably

    1. Candlepundit, I hope you are right and that your government takes this far more seriously than ours does. Please bear in mind that any anger you might read here on this article is from the needless death of your Soldiers on your own soil.

  8. According to this morning’s news, Zehaf-Bibeau was an ex-con (felon) with numerous drug busts. Also, he was born in Quebec.

And that new fence jumper at the White Housem, yesterday? Yeah, the dogs got him, but they got hurt when they did.

  9. In times of calamity or national tragedy, many citizens look to the White House for strength, for that steely resolve to dash a foe, to get up, dust off, and climb back atop the horse that tossed you. Our nation’s history is replete with examples of inspirational leadership. Yesterday, the Golfer in Mom Jeans reacted to the attack in Ottawa by saying, “We are all shaken by it.”

  10. I have been reading a lot on the news about the “peaceful religion of Mohammed.” I see that we “watch” them. Do we “watch” them commit murder? I guess we do. I also see that there is very little outrage from the peaceful religion when these acts occur as well.

My question…What is the answer? Status quo? Arm everyone and everything? 21st century crusade?

The lack of leadership, defining the problem and today’s political correctness is leading to more fear and senseless deaths. Sadly I think the status quo will remain in effect for a long time.

  11. I’m seeing a definite pattern (if I can see it, so can the government) of new, or recent, converts to islam being radicalized quickly after their conversion. Don’t forget the beheading of the woman down South by a recent radicalized convert.

As I said, before, we need to watch each other’s back, not “watch” like the government is doing, much better than that.
