USS Michael Murphy DDG-112

From The Medal of Honor News:

The Navy will christen the newest guided-missile destroyer, Michael Murphy, Saturday, May 7, 2011, during a 10 a.m. EDT ceremony at General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine. The new destroyer honors Navy SEAL (Sea, Air, Land) Lt. Michael P. Murphy who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan June 28, 2005.

With all the talk about DEVGRU (or SEAL Team 6) perhaps it worth noting that there are, and have been, other SEALS out there doing some heavy lifting as well.

No, this is not a ‘news’ story since it’s been in the works for several years, but coming on the heels of events surrounding the death of UBL it has a new relevance.

Added: Although the dates may disagree a bit, AW1Tim has a worthwhile take on this.  Lot’s more information than I opted to post here, but perhaps I should have?

  1. I literally live across the street from BIW and have watched DDG-112 from the time the name was engraved in the keel, until the last whisps of paint were applied this afternoon. She’s a beautiful ship and if her crew is only half as reliable at LT. Murphy was, then we’ve a great addition to the fleet with her christening.

    I’ve got more here:

God Bless USS Michael Murphy and all who sail on her.

  2. As a Navy veteran (1970/1974), this story of Lieutenant Murphy
brought tears to my eyes. I’m extremely proud of our military,
and equally as proud of every single man and woman who wears
the uniform of their selected branch of service. I wish I could
have been there to witness her christening. AW1 Tim: Thank you
    for posting the additional information.
God Bless this warship, and all who sail on her. May she
and her crew ALWAYS prevail. May this ship always live up to
her namesake, Lieutenant Michael Murphy, USN.
Thank you all and may God bless you all.
