Fox News is reporting that a Navy SEAL shot and killed Bin Laden in Pakistan in a fire fight that occurred as a result of Pakistan intelligence;
Declaring “justice has been done,” President Obama announced late Sunday that Usama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces in Pakistan, marking the end of the worldwide manhunt that began nearly a decade ago on Sept. 11, 2001.
So nothing has really changed in the war against terror, except that al Qaeda now has a bloody shirt to wave and a martyr.
Fox News said he was buried at sea, robbing Code Pink of a place to mourn the loss of their leader. Speaking of Code Pink, I expect an email today declaring the war over and no reason to stay in Afghanistan because bin Laden is dead.
Ben sends us a link to Michael Moore, who is already claiming that there’s no reason to stay in Afghanistan since bin Laden is dead.
The war against terror wasn’t about revenge for 9-11, it was about ridding the world of the terrorist scourge which we ignored for decades. That goal hasn’t been achieved and so the war must go on.
All of the public celebrations over the killing of bin Laden makes me uncomfortable, because it looks like a victory celebration when victory hasn’t been achieved. This is actually one step towards victory – but there won’t be victory until we make terrorism too expensive for terrorists in terms of blood and treasure.

Jonn; I think the bloody shirt scenario is a concern of the civil authorities, too. I heard reported that once the news broke about him reaching room temp, the NYPD commissioner put out an alert to do victory laps by the mosques every hour or so until further notice. IOW, this isn’t WWII where Hitler blew his brains out, game over, time to go home. Even then, former Nazis and German troops (notice the differentiation) were killing our GI’s for nearly five years after the cessation of hostilities (look up “Wolverines” in case your history isn’t up to snuff.) Iraq wasn’t over when we caught Saddam.

About the post WW2 Germany what sources is that from because when this subject came up on another site that it was very sporadic with a few diehard keeping Nazi propaganda. I have a magazine interview that talks more about it. But I thought the mean reason we left troops there was to stop the Iron curtain from spreading further rather then deal with a renewed Nazi threat. Even if there were mad enough to fight us they hated the Reds more. That is why the German units fought the reds with the main purpose of surrendering to the allies.

Spork–Yalta did have a lot with why we stayed in Germany after WWII, then as the Russian threat developed it merely reenforced why we were there. But if that was the case, why our presence elsewhere in Europe? Also keep in mind the Japanese had soldiers isolated on islands throughout the Pacific until at least the mid-70’s. WWII was not declared “officially” over until 1951 (yeah, I found that surprising as well.) But there were a number of cases of US personnel being murdered in the 1946-50 timeframe by former German soldiers.
