Military will not be paid during shutdown

ROS sends us this link from the Air Force Times;

Service members will not get paid and a significant number of Defense Department civilian employees will be furloughed, a senior Obama administration official said Wednesday in a conference call with reporters.

You can tell that Military Times’ Rick Maze, the Obama propagandist, was involved in the article;

Military personnel would continue to earn money during a shutdown, but they would not immediately be paid past Friday “until we have money again,” the senior administration official said.

They don’t get paid until the 15th anyway. Does anyone honestly think they’ll let the shut down go past a few days? All the GOP needs to do is wait them out through the weekend.

  1. That’s not the word around here. The GS will go, but the uniforms and the contractors stay and work. If the uniforms aren’t getting paid, it’ll be by Executive Order, not law.

  2. DaveO-
    it is the law in this case. Because there is no actual budget, just Continuing Resolutions, there is little guidance on who gets paid.

    I think this could be a PR mess for both sides. Yeah, John is right that everyone gets paid the same amount in the end, and maybe even on the normal payday. But, you can see you paycheck in Mypay one week before it gets deposited. So a bunch of joes looking at Mypay and seeing half a paycheck will start a shitstorm rolling down hill.

    I remember the ’95 shutdown, when I got a weekend off of drill. But then a few months later we had to do two drill weekends in a row to make up for it.

    The GOP needs to keep reminding people that it was the last Congress that didn’t pass a budget for this year, and that is the reason for the problem.

  3. Dave Thul,

    I get what you’re saying – the uniforms pull duty regardless. In the ’95 shutdown, I was pulling a regular duty day at Fort Campbell. Guidance at my job is uniforms and contractors report to work.

    I’m concerned for the second order of effects:

    Joes don’t get paid, they don’t pay their bills. UCMJ no-no. Credit report takes a hit equaling Security clearance no-no – perhaps not next month or so, but when getting it revewied and renewed.

    Promotions, retirements, demotions, transfers, travel – no-go.

    I did notice the Speaker trying to push a one-week CR that would remove military pay from the negotiating table for the remainder of this FY.

  4. Thi sis going to rip the morale of the troops in Iraq and Afghan in half if not more. What is pissing me off is the fact that Obama has ran away from DC because of this shutdown. When he is faced with shit like this he runs away, what is he going to do if this country is attacked again in a 9/11 type fashion, will he run away back to his home country of Kenya?

  5. For those in the Navy/Marine Corps who may run into short term financial trouble be aware the Navy Marine Corps relief society issued this statement:

    “If there is a government shutdown, the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society will remain open and operate normal hours. In the event there is an interruption to military pay, the Society will be prepared to assist with rapid, short-term, interest-free loans to avoid privation with essential items such as food, gasoline and other necessities.”

    So if this gets really shitty and you need to pay an electric bill make sure to head down to your base’s NMCR office.

    1. According to Stars & Stripes;

      Representatives for the Air Force Aid Society and the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society said their services would be available during a shutdown. A spokesman for the Army Emergency Relief has not responded to a request for comment.

  6. So, the administration made the decision to not pay the troops? Is this so they can blame the non-pay on the R’s, even though the D’s failed to pass a budget for a year or so?
    Or, is this just another cheap way for Ears to try to score some political points on the backs of those he thinks the least of? I’m sure he’ll tell all and sundry that it’s wrong to not pay the troops, leaving the impression that the executive decision to not pay the troops is the fault of the House of Representatives.

  7. NON-essentials…sheesh, I don’t guess libtards know what NON-essentials are…

    “….certain activities in the Defense Department are required by law to continue even if funding temporarily ceases so national security interests are not at immediate risk. Defense Secretary Robert Gates specifically addressed the matter in a House Armed Services Committee hearing Thursday, saying that any lapse in funding would not affect any current military operations.

    Further, payroll for Pentagon civilian and military staff is electronically scheduled, so paychecks that cover work done through Friday will go out as scheduled. If a shutdown occurs and is brief, staffers are likely to see no gap in pay…..”

  8. #9 UpNorth,

    In this case, the military is collateral damage. The Dems have put their marker that they control enough of the media to control the message: ‘Blame GOP at the polls.’ If past is prologue, it’s a very safe bet.

    It isn’t about FY2010. It’s about the first Tuesday, November 2012.

  9. I for one hope AER is open for business. Last year drained my reserves and this is one Staff Sergeant that needs every check I can get to catch up in the next few months. Looks like I might have to fall back on my old skills and do some sidework. Anyone need some mechanical work? 🙂

  10. UPDATE *** NBC’s Luke Russert reports that House GOP leaders, accusing the president of “not leading” on the budget, now say that they will call for a vote tomorrow on the one-week budget extension that cuts $12 billion and extends DoD funding for the rest of the fiscal year.

    I’m a PAO…we’re getting all kinds of email traffic but no clear messages. But we won’t get paid past the 8th. I have to assume that unless it lasts past the 15th it really won’t matter and we’ll get our full paychecks. They’ve also put fourth a bill to ensure we’ll always get paid regardless of if this happens again. They had 30 something sponsors…only 4 dems.

  11. #13 I thought moonlighting was against UCMJ. Shouldn’t you guys be contacting POWNET or his Provost Marshall?

  12. I am in an uniquely F-ed up situation, I am in the Army and my wife works for the VA…we would both have to show up to work and not get paid (she is considered “essential personnel”….

  13. #15

    We get it, Houser, you hate conservatives, you hate the military… heck, the only emotion you’re probably capable of is hate.

    You don’t have to continue to prove it.

  14. You can work a side job with your CO’s knowledge and permission. I have a coworker who works 0400-1200 and then is a bank teller for another 4 hours a day.

    I’m holding off on paying off my last credit card (about $4k) in case we miss a paycheck or two, but we will continue working, and hopefully enough three-letter-agency people will be showing up that we can get some work accomplished.

  15. So I guess all that bartending I did when I was stationed in Guam was illegal too…? Oh wait, it wasn’t. I just had to get my Department Head’s permission to do it and schedule that around command obligations. Never had a problem, and I was making around $20/hr in tips. Not bad for the early 90’s.
