Fatal shooting in Upper Peninsula may have been self-defense, police say

By Jackie Smith
MENOMINEE COUNTY, MI – The 34-year-old man who was found fatally shot in an Upper Peninsula residence early Thursday may have been hit in self-defense after a physical altercation, according to police.

Michigan State Police in Iron Mountain were originally called at 12:19 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, to a residence on County Road 551 in Harrison Township when the 34-year-old, of Wilson, was found shot.

Although MSP troopers and EMS personnel attempted life-saving measures, the man was pronounced dead on scene, according to a news release.

Following a preliminary investigation, police said a physical assault allegedly occurred between the Wilson man and his domestic partner before the shooting. The man then allegedly assaulted another member of the home with a knife and was shot.

Police said the shooting appeared to be self-defense.

    1. Microtech automatic OTF knives are da ‘bomb. But they are pricey, they usually run from about $350 to $500 depending on the model. Except the Chinese are copying them down to the box and accompanying paperwork. These “clones” are available online for about $100. Don’t get caught with one in your pocket; in many states, possession may be a felony.

      1. I made a partial check of the company. They started in Florida then moved out of state, If they stayed in Florida, no problem ordering the auto. I’m not allowed buy auto knives from out of state. Last 2 were A benchmade made Infidel OTF and the limited edition Benchmade/H&K side auto opener. Bought them at the Palm Beach County gun show years ago. I probaly could get away from ordering out of state through commercial carriers. I should check to see if Florida dealers sell the Microtech line.

        1. First deployment in 2004, our supply guy had to spend all the remaining budget, to get the same or more amount in the next iteration. Standards…

So, he found the toy catalog, and ordered just about every make of auto-knife the US Army offered. The 64 of us in the Security Company, received up to 7 knives of various makes. I kept 3 of the Benchmarks, and traded for 5 extra Buck 110A’s, and brought home 8 of them 🙂
