Fayette County residents hold suspected burglar at gunpoint until police arrive

FAYETTEVILLE, Texas — Fayette County residents took matters into their own hands when a suspected burglar trespassed on their property early Friday morning.The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office said it happened in the Fayetteville area. The 911 caller said they saw the man, later identified as 47-year-old Brian Schmitt, look around their vehicle and enter a building on the property.
A resident confronted the man and ordered Schmitt to the ground at gunpoint, where he stayed until police arrived.
Schmitt struggled as he was arrested, the sheriff’s office said, but two of the residents helped detain him.

Fayetteville has a population of 250 and Schmitt was born and raised here in Fayette County. His chances of not at a minimum of being recognized were small. The time-tested police tactic of rounding up the usual suspects solves most crimes here.
