I’ve been watching this story about the three Americans who “accidentally” hiked into Iran and managed to get themselves snagged by the Mullah authorities.
WASHINGTON — The United States said Friday it was investigating reports that three Americans have been abducted in northern Iraq.
“Embassy Baghdad is aware of the reports and is investigating,” State Department deputy spokesman Robert Wood said, referring to reports he said were on Al-Jazeera Television, an Arab satellite station based in Qatar.
My bride’s initial reaction was something akin to “What the hell were these dumbasses thinking?” Me, being indeed a Crotchety Old Bastard couldn’t help but suspect something more substantial than routine dumb-assery.
So, let’s take a little closer look at our gang of unfortunate and totally innocent “hikers”.
First we have Shane Bauer. Shane has a degree in “Peace and Conflict Studies” from…you guessed it…Berkley. He also has solid bona fides in the far left media world having written for The Nation and reported for the always pro-American Al Jazeera. Oh and lest I be negligent, I must point out that he speaks fluent Arabic and lives in “drumroll please” Damascus, Syria.
Next we have Sarah Shourd. Sarah is also a product of the ever progressive California education system. Her writing is so unhinged anti-Israel that it lends one to suspect that she is not in captivity at all but interviewing to be the mouth piece for Mookie I’m-A-Dinner-Jacket. Interestingly she also resides in Damascus, Syria.
Lastly we have Joshua Fattal whose father hails from Iraq. While our first two “hikers” seem to be your garden variety far left, anti-Israeli, terrorist sympathizers, Mr. Fattal is a true free thinking enviro-wacko.
Josh lives at the Aprovecho Research Center in Cottage Grove, Oregon which is little more than a government subsidized hippie commune. He holds a degree in Environmental Economics and Policy and is probably totally down with Obama’s Regulatory Czar who thinks it would be a grand idea if pigs and cows could sue people and actually be in court.
These three individuals are never going to be productive Americans so I say the Mullahs should keep them.
Now I’m not saying it’s okay for the Iranian Army to run about kidnapping Americans but if Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid want to go “hiking”, I some suggested places to do it.
In my opinion, it ain’t “kidnaping” if illegal aliens are apprehended. [World’s Smallest Violin starts playing.]
And, NO, I don’t have any sympathy for Al Gore’s two illegal aliens who were caught by the NORKS.
Very interesting info. The local press in Minnesota is reporting that the MN kid is an ‘award winning documentary producer”, which set off the BS flags but I didn’t think anything more of it.
If I understand the story correctly, they miraculously had time to call their 4th friend, who stayed at the hotel that day, to say that they were being arrested by Iranian border patrol.
The more I hear about it, the more it sounds like a publicity stunt.
and now we would have OB give something very important to the Mullahs to have those dumbasses freed… I say let them rot in Iranian jail… At least one lesson in reality is clearly in order for all 3. Plus, that would be something they could teach about later in their peace & conflict and enviro studies…
While I think the whole story smells a bit funny, I think that we should all be careful about saying things we may regret when the leftards get a hold of them if things are not as they seem.
Dave: Yeah, you and I were probably listening to the same station talk about that. My thought, when they said “award winning, blah, blah, blah,” was that this wasn’t going to past the smell test. The other thought, when this first broke, was “what the hell were American civilians doing “hiking” near the Iranian border in Irag?”
I have another thought that you may want to check out, COC, and that is; Remember that Ken dude who was a Gulf War Marine Vet that is now into all the “Peace and social justice” bs? I don’t remember the name of the org he was hanging with, but they were working on getting into Iraq to act as human shields back before the war started. I wonder if these morons are tied in with that group, or a similar group?

Thanks for the additional background info on the three “captees”. I have just cut back SO MUCH on my MSM “news” input (TV, radio & “news”paper), that sometimes I feel uninformed. But only rarely.
Anyway, if the Iranians think that these three are spies, let their equivelent of Secret Service try to de-brief them. It just might de-stabilize Iran by throwing in some mis-information.
Interesting that no one has commented that all 3 appear to be Jewish & what a propoganda coup for Iran if that were true. Regardless of their beliefs or affiliations, regardless of where they reside, if they are Jews, then Iran will use this as an excuse for a brouhaha. The 3 “hikers” seemingly all have roots to the once thriving Jewish communities in Iraq and/or Iran and will certainly be used by Hilter’s second coming to embarrass the Obama administration. No Bill Clinton intervention here I’m afraid.
