Weekend Open Thread

Peek-a-Fog

“During a handful times in a year, the morning marine fog drops to levels low enough to cover the Golden Gate Bridge, while the towers peek out. The bridge lights, during the blue hour creates an eye catching drama” says California based Your Shot photographer Raj Golawar.

Damn, even with a 30 knot tailwind I couldn’t outrun ChipNASA.

      1. Veritas Omnia Vincit

I’ve got the sailboat, we’re never seeing 30 knots unless it’s blowing us over….

    3. Ex-PH2

Congratulations to ChipNASA and all the zoomies with him.

I concede the Throne of Firstness to him.

        Thank You Ex-PH2.
I believe (without checking) this is my First “FIRST!” for 2017.

    Third!!!

    1. Ex-PH2

      Or not!

Dinner tonight is red beans and rice with smoked sausage.

      1. ChipNASA

        With or without bacon drippings?
I swear, the few times I go to Popeyes, I have to have their smoky creamy bacon/porky Red Beans and Rice. It’s like frecking CRACK

        1. Bernie Hackett

          Amen, Brother Chip! Preach it!

      2. Ex-PH2

With. Always use that. OK, here are the ingredients.

one chorizo sausage, mild or picante, your choice
one cup of rice of your choice
one to two cans of red beans (I use kidney beans canned in chili sauce, saves seasoning)
half to a whole chopped onion, IF desired
one link of smoked sausage, your favorite kind
about one cup of beef broth – dry bouillon w/water will do, but only enough to keep the rice from going too dry

Slice the smoked sausage and set aside
Squeeze the chorizo out of its casing, into the cooking pot with bacon grease, crumble it and sautee it
Add the uncooked rice and stir
Add the canned beans w/sauce and stir
Add some of the beef broth if there is not enough liquid to cook the rice
Keep stirring the pot. When the rice starts to soften, throw in the sliced smoked sausage, add the rest of the beef broth.
For extra flavor, you can also add mesquite steak seasoning, but I wouldn’t use too much.
Turn down the heat, cover the pot, and let it simmer very, very slowly.

Note: if one cup of beef broth is not enough, add more. I use dry bouillon powder. Chicken broth is also okay to use for this.

Make some cornbread to go with it. Lots of butter. Add fresh veggies like radishes, carrots, green onions, sliced zucchini, cucumber – whatever you like, plus stuffed olives.

And for afters: beverage of your choice, cheese and fruit.

        Good food.

        1. Bernie Hackett

          Thank you, Ma’am! Sounds delicious!

Tomorrow, 1APR, is the birthday of the founding of the Navy Chief Petty Officer.

“Chief petty officer is the seventh enlisted rate in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard, just above petty officer first class and below senior chief petty officer. Chief petty officers are classified as senior non-commissioned officers. The grade of chief petty officer was established on April 1, 1893 for the U.S. Navy.”

Happy Birthday, one day early, to my fellow lowlife miscreants with whom I rubbed elbows and told lies within the CPO Mess. Happy Birthday you reprobates. I love youse guys and gals …

Re the nice pic above of the Golden Gate Bridge, my wife of nearly 46 years, The Russian, was stationed at Letterman. She could see the bridge from her barracks. It’s really a magnificent engineering feat. Too bad it had to be built in San Fran on the Left Coast.

A little sarc about where it had to be built.

    1. OWB

Until the mid- to late-1960’s it was a petty good place. It was great back in the day for the kid of a CWO stationed at the Presidio. We even lived across the bay while he was in Korea. Wonderful memories.

    2. Perry Gaskill

I’ve driven across the Golden Gate Bridge more times than I can remember, and seen an uncounted number of photographs of it. An all-time favorite is one taken in 1935 of the bridge and a Martin flying boat on the maiden flight of China Clipper serviceto the Orient. The bridge itself is still under construction.

    3. desert

I have seen the Golden Gate from the bottom side! Our carrier passed under several times and the radar bell just cleared the bridge by a few feet it looked like! Wonder what these new super duper carriers are doing to clear it?

      1. Perry Gaskill

An interesting thing about the Gate from a sailboat perspective is that passage can be tricky based on tidal flow. Because of the relative narrowness, there’s a Venturi effect that causes currents to accelerate. Time your exit from the SF Bay wrong, and you can find yourself doing laps around the Farallon Islands for six hours waiting to get back in.

  19. Any updates on a certain gentleman who is neither a pilot nor a lawyer?

    1. The dope filed for an extension of time for him to appeal one of the several cases that he has lost. His problem? He didn’t notify all the concerned parties, (Which, as he was admonished; being schooled as a lawyer, he should have known.), thereby getting an admonishment from the court and the concerned parties.
If he is, in fact, “out of the country”, I hope like hell that TSA gives him hell on his attempt to re-enter, complete with the KY jelly total body inspection. And that wHiTgEnFeLd has volunteered to pick him up at the airport, and they get stopped, searched and their open bottles of celebratory MD 20/20 get them busted, and they have to watch their vintage drink get poured out.

    2. Skippy

You talking about Dufus in headlights Lol..

    3. Just An Old Dog

The recent antics of Dull-ass and Baby Huey Joe Cryer in Maryland, which he pulled the strings for, are going to bite him in the ass.
While he is going to try to deny responsibility, Cryer is looking at assault charges and is going to do anything to weasel out of going to jail.
He has to realize that Bernath threw him under the bus. Any statements he makes at his hearing that implicate Bernath are going into public record for the Shipley’s Attorney’s to use in future cases against Berdterd,

      1. HMCS(FMF) ret

Cryer has a prior history of assault against an ex-wife… plus he’s a Grade “A” shitbird in the court system. If he had a lick of common sense, he’d be sucking someone off to throw Danni-boi in jail.

As for DuLlAsS… he’s probably looking forward to being deloused, three squares and getting dorked in the squeakhole by the guys at the BTJT Deli…

        1. Just An Old Dog

Dullas and Bernath are both due in court in Kansas City Missouri this upcoming week.
It’s a criminal case, not one of the bullshit lawsuits.
Apparently Missouri has a pretty low tolerance for indecency and harrassment.

Kansas? Maybe they were comething after Jonn and took a wrong turn? I thought their AO was Fla, MD, and Tidewater.

Wish there was a table listing all their various charges and current status. These idiots are hard to keep up with unless you have a program.

              1. A Proud Infidel®™

That’s Kansas City MO, just across the Missouri River from Kansas City KS.

                1. Hondo

Actually, only a part of the border between Kansas City, KS, and Kansas City, MO, is the Missouri River. Much of the border is dry land, and south of I-70 you can walk directly from one city to the other.

              2. Just An Old Dog

                Not Kansas, Kansas City, Missouri.
I’m thinking The DRG has been screwing with someone in that AO.

                1. Just An Old Dog

Update, Exact Dates are April 3rd for Dullass. Berntass got a postposenment until May 11th.

                  1. Silentium Est Aureum

DullASS going to jail on Monday?

And getting out just in time to go to jail in MD.

Time to replenish the popcorn and grain beverages.

                  2. Ex-PH2

DAB got a postponement for KC,MO? Do you have a source for that? If so, please let me know.

            2. Silentium Est Aureum

I think I stated in a previous thread that if his lawyer in Virginia had a lick of sense (and apparently he does) he got a hell of a retainer up front.

I’m guessing after he goes through that, if Bernath even stutters, this guy is gone.

          3. Hondo

            Gee. That’s . . . just . . . too . . . bad.

Karma, she is a vengeful beeyotch.

          4. Ex-PH2

Old Dog, can you be more specific without giving away the farm?

            1. Just An Old Dog

              EX-PH2,
I’m not privy to all. It seem’s that the DRG went after some who is part of the SV community with their typical vulgar rants, e-mails and other tactics.
This person has their shit together and filed complaints on them and they have been summoned to appear.

              1. Silentium Est Aureum

And I’m pretty sure it isn’t Mary Schantag, although she’d have an iron-clad case against DullASS at least, given his history with her.

Danni-boi, DullASS, and Cryer. Shit ALWAYS comes back to haunt, fuckers. There’s a lot of people who are going to be very happy the day you cocksuckers go down.

Oh, and Sealy? Better hope you don’t get to spend your time in Jessup. I hear that’s not exactly a country club jail. But what do I know?

          5. Aysel

Why just hang up on them? They wasted your time calling you, have some fun.

Hack gets a phone call that he can get free solar panels, he pushes 1 to speak to a representative. The guy starts his spiel, and Hack calls him a sick mother effer because his family was killed in a fire that burned down the house, and were they going to out the panels on a pile of ashes.

Hack gets a call from a drug rehab center that will help him with his addiction. Hack asks if they can score him some crack. She told Hack to try Baltimore.

Hack gets a call that the warranty is about to run out on his car. He tells them that he has a 1961 Studebaker. They have no idea what a Studebaker is.

Need help with your credit card debt? Hack pushes #1 to speak to the representative, and when they answer, Hack tells her that he needs $798,000 by 8:00 PM tonight or the mob is going to break his legs.

      1. Hondo

        THEN hang up. (smile)

Long before hard hitting Naval Aviation classic movies like Hot Shots, or the tour de force Top Gun, steely eyed Naval Aviators, Navy Pilot professionals were on the silver screen, inspiring one and all with their airmanship and acts of derring-do. In that vein, the 1950’s era movie, “Launch ‘Em” was created. Watch and be inspired, as was I. This is exactly how I remember Carrier Ops, and perhaps why I then went to fixed wing, land based P-3C Orions. Which wasn’t that different after all.
Now sit back with a beverage and some popcorn (I’m looking at YOU, ex-OS2!) and enjoy, Launch ‘Em!

There lived a man, let’s call him John
and he was called to war.

His father old and infirm, said I
believe this cause is done for.

His father handed him a musket, some food
and said, son I cannot give you more.

You are chosen to protect us, which I cannot do
so go forth and do your best and may God bless
    you.

John strode forth, wiped away tears as he saw
    the shadow of his mother,
knowing that unless a miracle came to pass,
they would never again see each other.

He had no horse and walked the road, when he
came across a man so splendid, in uniform and
    surrounded by soldiers.

This man asked him, where do you go today friend,
with that musket and look upon your face?

He answered, I must go sir, to protect my family and country as I have been called.

The man looked upon him, and wanting something more, asked why do you think this is your fight?

John looked up at the man on the horse and answered, as only he know how,
We have a chance sir, to make this country ours.

Taking a breath, he repeated himself and added, or else we shall lose it.

The man on the horse looked down at him, smiled and called for a horse. Ride with us patriot, although you ride to certain death.

John rode a while, then turned to the man, and asked, how should I call you?

The man smiled and said, I am known as Jack Steward.

John died but his life was not in vain even though his blood was spilt upon the second abatis together with the other heroes.

    That such men lived.

    We must never forget.

A timely posting, as far as I am concerned, because today I was thinking about our Gold Star Moms. Perhaps they thinh the world has forgotten about them, their great losses, and the sacrifices of their children. It has not.

  35. Have a great weekend my good friends.
Off to work for a spell.

More unrelated news from D and D’s site.
Apparently the phoney AJ Dickens is out of Jail and coaching little league.
Some concerned parents googled him after hearing him spin tales about playing college ball at UCLA.

For those who don’t remember Dicken was sent to jail back in 2014 for defrauding people out of thousands of dollars saying he was a security expert and former SEAL.
