Based on Dave’s summary sheet, he did just over 3 years, 11 months, 9 days of active service. Dave was discharged as an E-4, SK3 (StoreKeeper). His service record shows No BUD/S, no SEAL Team.
So if you remember how he stated earlier about being in China Beach on Christmas Eve in 1969? Let’s look at his record, on 10JUL1969 he was in Treasure Island San Francisco in “A” school for Radioman (which he failed) and then was sent to Assault Boat Coxwain school in Coronado, CA for 3 weeks of schooling. He didn’t go to Vietnam until 16MAR1970 Naval Support Activity: Danang, Republic of Vietnam (navsuppfac crb for navsuppact danang)

I don’t know how “fit” those early SEALs looked but the dude in the alleged China Beach photo doesn’t exactly “fit” the image I would expect…doesn’t even look like he was stocking groceries (consistent with his rate) with that upper body

A slight correction to the entry though Jonn, Radioman A school was never in Treasure Island, he failed out of RADARMAN A school-looking at blips on the scope.

Or better yet, he could have gone full secret squirrel and claimed he was assigned to the Naval Advisory Detachment in Da Nang. Their officers/NCOs were real SEALs; I met several of them and received a tour of their facilities and boats used by the RVN Navy Sea Commandos. He could have claimed he was a coxswain on one of their stealth “sterile” PT type boats I visited. But it is unlikely he ever heard of them, as they were a spook unit of MACV-SOG.
